2008-07-27 A's Game Dick Williams HOF
Richard Hirschfeld Williams (born May 7, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri) is a former left fielder, third baseman, manager, coach and front office consultant in Major League Baseball. Known especially as a hard-driving, sharp-tongued manager from 1967-69 and 1971-88, he led teams to three American League pennants, one National League pennant, and two World Series triumphs. He is one of seven managers to win pennants in both major leagues, and joined Bill McKechnie in becoming only the second manager to lead three franchises to the Series. He remains the only manager in history to lead four teams to seasons of 90 or more wins. On December 3, 2007 Williams was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. He was formally inducted on July 27, 2008. After spending 1970 as the third base coach of the Montreal Expos, Williams returned to the managerial ranks the next year as boss of the Oakland Athletics, owned by Charlie Finley. The iconoclastic Finley had signed some of the finest talent in baseball -- including Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando, Bert Campaneris, Rollie Fingers and Joe Rudi -- but his players hated him for his penny-pinching and constant meddling in the team's affairs. During his first decade as the Athletics' owner, 1961-1970, Finley had changed managers a total of ten times. Inheriting a second-place team from predecessor John McNamara, Williams promptly directed the A's to their first AL West title in 1971 behind another ...

New York Yankee's George Steinbrenner In Memoriam RIP
New York Yankee's George Steinbrenner In Memoriam RIP
The is a Genuine G-Shot marking the passing of legendary New York Yankee's Owner George M. Steinbrenner III. From the New York Times by Richard Goldstein: George Steinbrenner, Who Built Yankees Into Powerhouse, Dies at 80 . George Steinbrenner, who bought a declining Yankees team in 1973, promised to stay out of its daily affairs and then, in an often tumultuous reign, placed his formidable stamp on 7 World Series championship teams, 11 pennant winners and a sporting world powerhouse valued at perhaps $1.6 billion, died Tuesday morning at a hospital in Tampa, Fla., where he lived. He was 80. The cause was a heart attack, the Yankees said. Mr. Steinbrenner had been in failing health for several years. His death came eight months after the Yankees won their first World Series title since 2000, clinching their six-game victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at his new Yankee Stadium, and two days after the team's longtime public-address announcer, Bob Sheppard, died at 99. A pioneer of modern sports ownership, Mr. Steinbrenner started the wave of high spending for players when free agency arrived, and he continued to spend freely through the Yankees' revival in the late '70s and early '80s, the long stretch without a pennant and then renewed triumphs under Joe Torre as manager and General Manager Brian Cashman. The Yankees' approximately $210 million payroll in 2009 dwarfed all others in baseball, and the team paid out millions in luxury tax and revenue-sharing with small ...

Anglia Television Knights
Anglia Television Knights
The Anglia Knight is over 100 years old and was commissioned originally by the King of the Netherlands. The king was a patron of a society called The Falcon Club, which met once a year to compete in horse races, falconry and other sports. In 1850, the King felt so confident that he would win the contest that he commissioned a trophy from a London firm of silversmiths. The trophy was modelled on the statue of Richard Coeur de Lion, which stands outside the House of Parliament, but it was made to represent the Black Prince. However, to the King's dismay it was won by an Englishman and brought back to Britain where it remained in the possession of the victor's family until 1959 the year Anglia first went on the air. A famous firm of Bond Street jewellers and goldsmiths (Aspreys) was commissioned to make certain modifications including the pennant on the lance and the magnificent trophy became the famous symbol of Anglia Television. The Anglia Knight is made of sterling silver and weighs over 700 ounces. The detailed work was hand-chased by a superb craftsman. The music that is heard when the knight is on air is part of Handel's Water Music, specially arranged for Anglia Television by Sir Malcolm Sargent. Thanks to Steve Hearn and Adrian Ruck

Winnipeg Goldeyes: August 17, 2011 Highlights
Winnipeg Goldeyes: August 17, 2011 Highlights
For the second consecutive night, an early deficit didn't faze the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The Goldeyes found themselves down 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday night, but rallied for a 7-4 win over the St. Paul Saints before a large crowd of 6824 at Shaw Park. The victory gives the Goldeyes a three-game sweep of the Saints and moves Winnipeg five games ahead of St. Paul for first place in the North Division. Winnipeg's magic number to clinch the North Division pennant now sits at six. St. Paul hit three home runs in the first two innings, including two from Richard Mercado, to build a 3-0 lead. Winnipeg struck to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning. After two errors by St. Paul shortstop Steve Mays, Louis Ott singled in Wes Long, Luis Alen singled in Fehlandt Lentini and Ott scored on a Price Kendall ground ball. After St. Paul took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning, Winnipeg tallied singles in the fourth through seventh innings for the 7-4 win. Kendall, Ott and Alen all had two RBI to lead Winnipeg's scoring efforts. Goldeyes' starter Luis Villarreal tossed five and two-thirds innings to get the win, while St. Paul's starter Matt Long gets hit with the loss. Jamie Vermilyea pitched the ninth inning to earn his 14th save of the season. The Goldeyes now head to Lincoln for a three-game series against the surging Saltdogs, beginning Friday night at Haymarket Park. The Saltdogs are a game and a half back of St. Paul in the wild card race and ...
