Flash Mob at NUS Arts Deck Canteen
Just another ordinary day at the Deck? Well, think again! A flash mob at the NUS Arts Deck that is proudly brought to you by the iGraduAID team. iGraduAID encourages the FASS graduating cohort to contribute to help their juniors in need. The team aims to raise $11250 to sponsor at least 5 bursaries this year. To find out more about iGraduAID and how you can contribute to make a difference, visit us at www.igraduaid.sg or our Facebook page at http NOW! Video by DRIM Studio www.facebook.com www.facebook.com --------------------------------------------------------------- Lyrics of songs performed for flash mob: Good Riddance (Time of Our Lives) -- Green Day Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road, Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go, So make the best of this test and don't ask why, It's not a question but a lesson learned in time. It's something unpredictable but in the end is right I hope you had the time of your life. So take the photographs and still frames in your mind, Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time, Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial, For what it's worth, it was worth all the while. It's something unpredictable but in the end is right I hope you had the time of your life. It's something unpredictable but in the end is right I hope you had the time of your life. Youngest NUS graduates for 2012 - 08Jul2012
SINGAPORE - Douglas Tan was only seven years old when he discovered a knack for solving mathematical problems, tackling sums meant for the upper primary and secondary levels. He went on to join the Gifted Programme in Rosyth Primary School and, in 2006, enrolled in the National University of Singapore High School of Math and Science (NUSHS). At 15, he was offered a place at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Science to study mathematics. Tomorrow, the 19-year-old will be this year's youngest graduate at NUS, receiving his Mathematics degree with a First Class Honours. This puts him almost six years ahead of those his age. Douglas, who is currently serving his National Service (NS), said the thought of going to prestigious universities overseas never occurred to him. "I was just happy doing what I was doing - solving math problems," he said. In every class he took, Douglas was the youngest but it was neither "awkward nor tough to fit in", he said. In fact, his age was a good conversation starter and his classmates, who were typically three to five years older, would take care of him. Seeing that he could complete his degree before he entered NS, Douglas took on three modules a semester and completed the four-year course in just two and a half years. The longest he had ever spent on a math problem was 10 hours over a few days. "I'm a perfectionist. When I do a problem, I try to do it with 100 per cent," he noted. Douglas aspires to be a mathematician and ...

NUS terminates China student, Sun Xun's final semester scholarship - 26Mar2012
SINGAPORE: The National University of Singapore (NUS) has taken disciplinary action against undergraduate scholarship holder Sun Xu, the Chinese national who came under fire in February for making offensive remarks about Singaporeans online. In a circular to students from NUS Provost Tan Eng Chye, NUS said 25-year-old Sun Xu's remarks were "improper, insensitive and disrespectful to the community". Its board of discipline has given him an official reprimand, slapped him with a $3000 fine and further required Sun Xu to perform three months' community service before he's allowed to graduate. NUS has also informed Sun Xu that his undergraduate scholarship benefits have been terminated for the final semester as his behaviour was unbecoming of a scholarship holder. Sun Xu says he has accepted the decision. Posting a message on his profile page of social networking site Ren Ren, Mr Sun said the last month "has been filled with great regrets and remorse". Writing in both English and Chinese, he said his comments were disrespectful and inappropriate, and that he was very sorry for making those comments. Sun is an MOE scholar but NUS is the administrator of his scholarship. The final-year engineering student posted on his blog last month that "there are more dogs than humans in Singapore", describing how some people would stare at him after he brushed against them in public. NUS said his remarks had stirred up considerable unease, distrust and ill-will within and beyond the ...

TeamLEAD at Duke-NUS
This is a video showcasing the TeamLEAD curriculum at Duke-NUS. We believe medical education is more than just memorizing facts; more importantly, it should critically examine facts and build creative thinking skills. To this end, we use an innovative yet rigorous team-based learning platform called TeamLEAD. TeamLEAD -- which stands for Learn, Engage and Develop -- describes how our students and faculty work and exemplifies the innovative spirit of our school.

Music: Machinefabriek "Kreukeltape"
http://www.machinefabriek.nu/
Text: Sandra Moskova
The basic idea of the project is built upon the consideration of creating
a moving sculpture from the recorded motion data of a real person. For
our work we asked a dancer to visualize a musical piece (Kreukeltape by
Machinenfabriek) as closely as possible by movements of her body. She was
recorded by three depth cameras (Kinect), in which the intersection of the
images was later put together to a three-dimensional volume (3d point cloud),
so we were able to use the collected data throughout the further process.
The three-dimensional image allowed us a completely free handling of the
digital camera, without limitations of the perspective. The camera also reacts
to the sound and supports the physical imitation of the musical piece by the
performer. She moves to a noise field, where a simple modification of the
random seed can consistently create new versions of the video, each offering
a different composition of the recorded performance. The multi-dimensionality
of the sound sculpture is already contained in every movement of the dancer,
as the camera footage allows any imaginable perspective.
The body – constant and indefinite at the same time – “bursts†the space
already with its mere physicality, creating a first distinction between the self
and its environment. Only the body movements create a reference to the
otherwise invisible space, much like the dots bounce on the ground to give it
a physical dimension. Thus, the sound-dance constellation in the video does
not only simulate a purely virtual space. The complex dynamics of the body
movements is also strongly self-referential. With the complex quasi-static,
inconsistent forms the body is “paintingâ€, a new reality space emerges whose
simulated aesthetics goes far beyond numerical codes.
Similar to painting, a single point appears to be still very abstract, but the
more points are connected to each other, the more complex and concrete
the image seems. The more perfect and complex the “alternative worlds†we
project (Vilém Flusser) and the closer together their point elements, the more
tangible they become. A digital body, consisting of 22 000 points, thus seems
so real that it comes to life again.

2012 International Relation Office - NUS Student Exchange
SYPNOSIS : The Student Exchange Programme (SEP) gives students an opportunity to spend one to two semesters at our partner universities offering an excellent opportunity to gain a holistic global education during their candidature at NUS. Partnering over 180 universities in over 4 continents and 30 countries, we have something to cater to the varied interests of our students. SEP complements the education that Science students receive in NUS by providing them with new academic opportunities and a broader understanding of cultures and customs of other countries. Each year we have over 300 places to allow students to study abroad and pay only home university fees. With appropriate mapping students will be given credits which can be counted towards their graduation requirements. Spiderman spotted at NUS central library 23/04/09
Was mugging (studying) in school during study week as usual and this happened at around 130am. Is this a NUSSU (student union) 'event' or is it some idiot trying to play the fool... or is it really SPIDEY???? :P See for yourself. Whatever it is, it was cool to relieve some of the stress from us muggers.
