Detective Story (1951) with Kirk Douglas (English/Czech subs)
www.imdb.com William Wyler, who won three Oscars for Best Director ("Mrs. Miniver", "The Best Years of Our Lives", "Ben-Hur"), and been nominated a record 12 times between 1937 and 1966, is not often thought of as one of our "great" directors. Truly, he was. Here, with the filmization of Sidney Kingsley's stage play about a NYC police station, focusing on the amazingly bad day which has been happening to Detective Kirk Douglas, Wyler shows his skill and diversity. Kirk Douglas is the vision of a crumbling spirit disguised by toughness and authority. He towers over a stellar cast, including Eleanor Parker as his wife, William Bendix as one of the other officers in the precinct, and Lee Grant as an inexperienced shoplifter. The one actor who truly stands out from the rest is Joseph Wiseman, who is simply a spark plug made up as an actor, giving an astounding recreation of his stage role as an on-edge, cheap suit-wearing thief. He displays the physical dexterity of James Cagney in the physique of a beanstalk, and proves to be more dangerous than any other movie crook we'd seen in the past. In one of the great Oscar follies of our time (and there were many), the 1952 voters neglected to nominate Douglas as Best Actor, or Wiseman in a supporting slot. Nominations were given out for Wyler's direction, the screenplay, and for Parker and Grant, lead and supporting actresses respectively. None for Best Picture, the other nominations were passed over in favor of "A Place in the Sun ...

For the entertainment of corrupt Roman senator Marcus Licinius Crassus (Laurence Olivier), Batiatus' gladiators are to stage a fight to the death. On the night before the event, the enslaved trainees are "rewarded" with female companionship. Spartacus' companion for the evening is Varinia (Jean Simmons), a slave from Brittania. When Spartacus later learns that Varinia has been sold to Crassus, he leads 78 fellow gladiators in revolt. Word of the rebellion spreads like wildfire, and soon Spartacus' army numbers in the hundreds. Escaping to join his cause is Varinia, who has fallen in love with Spartacus, and another of Crassus' house slaves, the sensitive Antoninus (Tony Curtis). Johnny Cash, Kirk Douglas, Roy Rogers & Dale Evans--1971
Part 1 of 3. Kirk Douglas appears on the Feb. 3, 1971 episode of "The Johnny Cash Show" to promote 1971's 'A Gunfight," in which both he and Cash starred. The episode, one of the few shot on location (in Old Tucson), features comedy from classic Western movie character actors Walter Brennan, Edgar Buchanan, Andy Devine and Chill Wills; Cash singing "Mean As Hell;" Roy Rogers and Dale Evans singing "Along The Navajo Trail;" and as God is my witness, yodeling from Judy Lynn. (Any help with song titles is always appreciated.)

Milos Forman on Meeting Kirk Douglas & Michael Douglas
Milos Forman talks with an audience about his first experiences with Kirk and Michael Douglas after a screening of his acclaimed film ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST at the AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, MD. Directed by Forman, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST was the second film in history to claim the coveted "Big 5" Academy Awards categories and stars Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher and Brad Dourif. AFI's Todd Hitchcock moderates a discussion between audience members and Milos Forman about his experience as an acclaimed Czech-American director. CONNECT WITH AFI: AFI.com Twitter.com Facebook.com

Stanley Kubrick's Masterpiece, "Paths Of Glory". Final scene.
The best final scene in cinema? A tough call, but this moving and unforgettable scene ranks with the greatest ones. After the preening head officers unjustly execute three decent infantrymen, the rest Kirk Douglas' unit is given some last minute entertainment before returning to the front where more bloody and pointless battles await them.

CSULB - Kirk Douglas Lecture
In 1996, legendary film actor and producer, Kirk Douglas, suffered a stroke that greatly affected his speech. He was very frightened. He was very depressed. He was very concerned about his future. Finally he just made some decisions and I think part of those decisions were I can still write books. He's written two books since the stroke, My Stroke of Luck and Let's Face It. Both of which talk about, number one, speech therapy and the importance it has had in his recovery and secondly, talks about how he has gone forward after his stroke and the things that he has done. He inspires people tremendously that way and then also he was in a movie called Diamonds and he did a great job. And he talked about speech pathology services in Diamonds and showed the kind of exercises that he was doing. He was very, very complimentary about speech pathologists and what they had done for him.
