12 Byzantine Rulers Part 14 Alexius
When the 24 year old Alexius Comnenus came to the throne, the glories of the Empire seemed long gone. Its "invincible" army had been smashed at the battle of Manzikert, the frontiers were collapsing, and enemies on every side threatened to overwhelm what was left. It would take an extraordinary ruler to salvage something from the wreckage much less restore Byzantine prestige. Join Lars Brownworth as he takes a look at Alexius Comnenus, the man who did just that, even as the First Crusade erupted around him.

Manuel I and the Second Crusade
This is an extract from the history of the English by Henry of Huntingdon, which mentions the Byzantine's involvement in the Second Crusade. Not only is this interesting as a narrative of the Second Crusade from a man of the time but also how a man from England was anble to keep an idea of the events that were going on around him and how he explained them.

A second Diocletian, it was Alexios I Komnenos that saved the empire from destruction from the Normans then the Pechenegs and then the Turks. He successfully handled the First Crusade and established a dynasty that would define the next century. He was one of the finest Eastern Roman Emperors.

Turkish Mercenaries Under Alexios Komnenos in 1078 // The Alexiad
The Alexiad, written by Anna Komnena (between 1143-1153), daughter of the Byzantine emperor Alexios Komnenos (1081-1118), is one of the all time greats of historical writing. This extract deals with the confusing geopolitical situation of the 1080s following the Byzantine defeat to the Seljuk Turks at Manzikert in 1071 and the ensuing chaotic civil war that tore Anatolia apart, eventually seeing widespread Turkish infiltration into the empire .
