Gadar: Part 1
Gadar: A true patriotic Indian movie. In 1947, Tara, a Sikh truck driver in Punjab,India meets and falls in love with a wealthy Muslim girl named Sakina. Love in the time of Partition is the theme of Anil Sharma-directed "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha". The film, produced by Nitin Keni (of Zee Films), flips back the dark pages of our history (partition) and, against its backdrop, delineates the story of two lovers and their struggle to stay together. In a nutshell, "Gadar" is a film with a patriotic theme woven around a touching love story. Uttam Singh's music and Anand Bakshi's lyrics have an earthy feel that gels well with the film's theme.

Agreement
Educated, traveled, intelligent, wealthy, and a businesswomen Mala Mathur would like to marry a man who can look after the household duties while she works. Her uncle, Mr. Mathur, ridicules this idea, and tells her that she will never find any husband in this manner. Mala advertises in the newspapers, and gets tons of responses. She decides on marrying a young man by the name of Shekar Sinha, who is poor, unemployed, and willing to commit himself to household duties. Before the marriage, Shekar is asked to sign an agreement, which he does. And thus begins the marriage, which is not really a marriage, but an employment contract, which is terminable after one year. The question is will Shekar be able to survive for one year - especially when he does not know how to cook meals for his wealthy "wife".

Biography of Dilip Kumar
Muhammed Yusuf Khan took on the name Dilip Kumar as his screen name. He was born on 11th December 1922 in Peshawar which is now part of Pakistan. He was born into a Pashtun family and was one of twelve children. One of his brothers Nasir Khan was also an actor and they worked together in Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Bairaag (1976). His father Ghulam Sarwar was a fruit merchant with orchards in Peshawar and Deolali in Maharashtra.
He started a canteen in Pune where he was noticed by the director Amiya Chakravarty. With Chakravarty and actress Devika Rani's help, he entered the film industry after changing his name to Dilip Kumar.
Dilip Kumar was involved with actress Madhubala but they had to part ways as her family was opposed to their marriage. He married actress Saira Banu who was two decades younger than him in 1966. He married a second time in 1980 to Asma but the marriage ended soon after.
Dilip Kumar has been actively involved in charity work. He has been awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1994) and Nishan-e-Pakistan by the Pakistani Government in 1998. He entered politics in 2000 and was a Member of Parliament.

He worked in several movies the following year among which were Shahid (1948), which was about India's freedom struggle and starred Kamini Kaushal with whom he was romantically linked off-screen too and Mela (1948) with Nargis. Andaz (1949) was the first and last movie in which he worked with Raj Kapoor.
1950 to 1959 The early fifties saw the release of movies like Arzoo (1950), Deedar (1952), Aan (1952) and Footpath (1953). In 1955, he commanded applause for his performance in Bimal Roy's Devdas with Suchitra Sen and Vyjayanthimala.
Naya Daur (1957) was a commercial and critical success. The movie was also in the news as the director B.R. Chopra took legal action against actress Madhubala as she was signed up as the lead but backed out when her relationship with Dilip Kumar came to an end.
1960 to 1976 Dilip Kumar's next role as Prince Salim in Mughal-e-Azam (1960) was another one of his memorable performances and the movie was one of the high grossers of Bollywood. He produced and acted in Ganga Jamuna with his brother Nasir Khan.
1981 to 1989 Manoj Kumar's Kranti was his comeback movie in 1981. It was a multi starrer with Hema Malini, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha and Parveen Babi. It was one of the biggest movies of the eighties.

skin (in progress study)
This study, “skin,” is a response to an assignment given by Sandra Chatterjee as part of the Post Natyam Collective's long-distance collaboration process (www.postnatyam.blogspot.com). The assignment asked us to do a contemporary diasporic translation of an excerpt from a Bollywood courtesan film.
"skin" uses music by Loren Nerell and text by Sumita Chakravarty. It integrates two techniques that have been used in other Post Natyam studies: the zooming into a woman’s body parts and the use of projection on the moving body. Several years ago I read Sumita Chakravarty’s book, National Identity in Indian Popular Cinema, 1947-1987, which has an entire chapter dedicated to courtesan films. I found her description of the courtesan’s place in Indian cultural consciousness particularly apt in its complex contradictions and thus decided to use it as a visual element in the study. Here is the text:
"The courtesan, as historical character and cinematic spectacle, is one of the most enigmatic figures to haunt the margins of Indian cultural consciousness. Variously described as dancing girl, nautsch-girl, prostitute, or harlot, she appears again and again in Indian cultural texts, at once celebrated and shunned, used and abused, praised and condemned. Socially decentered, she is yet the object of respect and admiration because of her artistic training and musical accomplishments. The embodiment of a charged sexuality, she is as often associated in popular culture with the Madonna. A bazaar entertainer, she is paradoxically the repository of the traditions of a vanished age and a lost way of life. Economically independent, she is portrayed as yearning for the affections and protection of a man…Skirting the boundaries of the legitimate and the illegitimate, an intricate blend of Hindu and Muslim social graces, this ambiguous icon of Indian womanhood and female power-cum-vulnerability serves as the analog of a national palimpsest inscribed with contradictory social meanings." (Chakravarty, 270)
