Colombia
Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia, is a constitutional republic in northwestern South America. Colombia is bordered to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; to the north by the Caribbean Sea; to the northwest by Panama; and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. Colombia also shares maritime borders with Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. With a population of over 45 million people, Colombia has the 29th largest population in the world and the second largest in South America, after Brazil. Colombia has the third largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico and Spain. The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous nations including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization killing or taking as slaves almost 90% of that native population, and then creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada (comprising modern-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, the northwest region of Brazil and Panama) with its capital in Bogotá.Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally ...

Day 1: Tingo tingo tango
From our first visit to the Hogar Nueva Granada on Friday August 6. Martha, the program teacher, had us get to know the students by playing this game, which is a mix between "hot potato" and "truth or dare." Everyone did something embarrassing (including us: Kyle danced, Tatiana drew the number 100 with her butt, and Alex did a "Saturday Night Fever" impression while singing Happy Birthday). Although humiliating at first, Martha used the game to teach an important lesson: we can all be comfortable opening up to each other, and there's a difference between laughing at someone and laughing with them.

Google Doodle Panama Independence Day 2012
Google Doodle Panama Independence Day 2012 In 1819 the liberation of New Granada was achieved, finally gaining its freedom from Spain. Panama and the other regions of former New Granada were therefore technically free. Panama weighed its options carefully as it considered union with Peru or with Central America in federations that were emerging in the region. Finally it was won over by Venezuela's Simon Bolivar, who's ambitious project of a Gran Colombia (1819--1830) was beginning to take shape. Then, timing the action with the rest of the Central American isthmus, Panama declared its independence in 1821 and joined the southern federation. It is a common mistake to call the 1903 events 'Panama's independence from Colombia'. Panamanians do not consider themselves former Colombians. They celebrate their independence from Spain on November 28, 1821; and November 3, 1903, the separation from Colombia. More to Panama: en.wikipedia.org

Policarpa Salavarrieta
Policarpa Salavarrieta was born on junuary 26 in 1796 and died on november 14 in 1817 during the viceroyalty of New Granada. Policarpa was a young warrior known as the Pola, who work hard in the patriot army in search of freedom and independence of America. An expert on intelligence work, Pola was responsable for reluting people for the couse, also purchase food and weapons for the troops, as well as send and recieve secret messages, and also drew information from soldiers to give to her countrymen for which she ended up being killed. In her childhood, she lived in the village of Guaduas and then in Santafe, she learned to read and write something not common in woman of her time. Pola was a woman who didn`t care to say things in the face of clergy or the autorities. If she saw some injustice being committed. She always dreamed of seeing her country free from spanish rule. Besides trying to change the thinking of people. In her time, she was a great help and thanks to her we have a free country. I admire people with on open mind and i feel great admiration for Pola, because at the time when she lived people were treated upon depending their race, gender and roots. She defended her ideals regardeless of the consequences for her actions, thought that all human beings are different from each other, but despite this they all have the same rights. I would like Pola back to life again to make it an example of life for people. but i think thet she would be very angry to see that ...
