Cambodia: Siem Reap (places we go)
Siem Reap was always destined for great things, but few people saw them coming this thick and this fast. It has reinvented itself as the epicentre of the new Cambodia, with more guesthouses and hotels than temples, world-class wining and dining and sumptuous spas. At its heart, Siem Reap is still a little charmer, with old French shop-houses, shady tree-lined boulevards and a slow-flowing river. But it is expanding at breakneck speed with new houses and apartments, hotels and resorts sprouting like mushrooms in the surrounding countryside. The tourist tide has arrived and locals are riding the wave. Not only is this great news for the long-suffering Khmers, but it has transformed the town into a pulsating place for visitors. Forget the naysayers who mutter into their beers about Siem Reap in the 'old days', now is the time to be here, although you may curse your luck when stuck behind a jam of tour buses on the way back from the temples. Angkor Wat is a place to be savoured, not rushed, and this is the base to plan your adventures. Still think three days at the temples is enough? Think again with Siem Reap on the doorstep. (text from lonelyplanet). Have to admit you have to love it!

Tuk Tuk around Siem Reap (1) 2011
Dining Out in Siem Reap For a comparatively small town, Siem Reap offers an amazing range of cuisines and dining venues. The emphasis is, of course, on Khmer food, which can be found at restaurants across town, but European and other Asian cuisines are also well represented, including Italian, Thai, German, Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and, of course, French. www.canbypublications.com

What's Siem Reap Like?
Siem Reap, in northwest Cambodia, is more than just a gateway to the largest temple in the world. Beginning with sunrise over Angkor Wat and ending in Pub Street, this is a visual tour through Siem Reap and its surroundings. At 4:23 and again from 7:33, it explores most of the other breathtaking temples in the greater Angkor region, while at 5:19 it looks at life on the river and the Tonle Sap lake. Cut to original music, it is interlaced throughout with snippets of cultural and apsara performances and scenes of street and village life. A must-see if you don't know whether to visit Siem Reap.

Siem Reap, Cambodia Flooding, September 2011
For Southeast Asia Travel Advice, visit www.southeastasiatraveladvice.com The monsoon season is in full swing in Southeast Asia. September 10th the Siem Reap River, which flows through Siem Reap and next to the Old Market area, spilled out of its banks. By September 11, hotels had sandbagged their doors and most of the Old Market was empty due to flooding. Tourists headed to Angkor Wat will have to roll up their pants legs. Tap water has likely been exposed, so it is critically important travelers take water precautions like not using tap water to brush their teeth and avoiding uncooked vegetables. See our Twitter at http for up-to-date information about the flooding situation and other Southeast Asia news.

Aki Ra's Land Mine Museum in Siem Reap, Cambodia
Terry Hodgkinson aka "wandering ninja" takes some video shots of the old land mine museum in Seim Reap. Also there is a video shot of a memorial for the Cambodian victims who perished because of the Khmer Rouge in Siem Reap. "Walking around the land mind museum was a wake up call to just how dangerous certain parts of Cambodia still are. To learn of Aki Ra's life story was to learn about adversity at it's best and the will to survive no matter what. When I was there the land mind museum was nothng but a humble shack and now it's moved to a much better and bigger space to carry on Mr. Ra's message and good work. Plus it's set up as a refuge for children who have been hurt or maimed do to explosives they encountered. I have a lot of respect for Aki Ra and what he has done and continues to do!" - Terry Background: Aki Ra is a former Khmer Rouge conscripted child soldier who works as a deminer and museum curator in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Aki Ra is unsure of his age, but believes he was born in 1970. His parents were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Orphaned in the Khmer Rouge camp, he was taken in by a woman named Yourn who raised him and several other orphaned children until he was conscripted into the Khmer Rouge army at about 10 years of age. Mae Yourn (Mother Yourn), who lived and worked at the Cambodia Landmine Museum, died at the age of 66 in April 2010 from complications from diabetes. Aki Ra fought for the Khmer Rouge until 1983 when he was captured by the Vietnamese. He was ...

City of Siem Reap in Cambodia
Nestled between rice paddies and stretched along the Siem Reap River, the small provincial capital of Siem Reap Town serves as the gateway to the millennium-old temple ruins of the Khmer Empire. Siem Reap Town is where you will stay during your visit to Angkor. The area has been receiving foreign visitors to the temples for over 100 years.
