Hozomeen: A story about chert, identity, and landscape
Hozomeen chert is a locally abundant and distinctive tool stone found exclusively in the northern Cascade range of Washington and British Columbia. Over the last two decades, archeologist Bob Mierendorf has studied quarries near today's Ross Lake reservoir that reveal a 10000 year long record of indigenous involvement with this rugged, high-mountain landscape. The word Hozomeen means "sharp, like a sharp knife." Its story cuts across time and place, cultures and borders, archeology and oral histories, connecting us all as human beings. As Bob says, we're all descended from people who used stone to make their tools. "It's what put food on the table for thousands of years." Finding Flint and chert - some tips and hints
Decided while I was in Maine to do some hunting for Flint, Chert and other rocks that spark. I found that using a standard file I was able to easily discern what rocks created a spark with carbon steel rather than ruin the finish on any of my knives. Hoping in the future to start doing some flintknapping

Georgetown Chert Biface.wmv
I had high hopes for this nodule, but it turned out to be a fairly low grade with many little inclusions. The dark heart was a lot tougher than the surrounding material. It got pretty thin all the same, but blew up dramatically. Usually a blade will break in two pieces, but this one separated into four... A little extra drama for your viewing pleasure. :)
