The City of London's Medieval & Modern Guilds
When William the Conqueror faced the merchant and commercial powers and societies of London 1000 years ago, he let them keep their already established rights and laws. The guilds start to get royal charters as early as the 13th century, 110 of them developing all the way up to the present day, and they still hold many of their ancient powers of trade and self-governance.
We'll explore how they became established, how they were and are organised, how they affected society, how you join, some of their ongoing roles and workings, and how they tie in to the running of the City of London as an ancient region in itself right in the heart of Greater London. Fascinating stuff!

London's City Wall and Barbican - Rather Splendid Walk
A tremendous walk around London's rather splendid ancient city wall built by the Romans alongside the modern Barbecan centre.
We pass the panyer boy who marks the highest point in the city of London (or does he?).
Christchurch Greyfriars which was never rebuilt after the war. Watts memorial to self sacrifice, livery companies, a buried head of a king and Shakespere's house.
As usual there is a lot more with many interesting facts about London as we take a delightful walking tour around this area packed with London history.

A Guided Tour of the City of London - 1.5 Hours of Fascinating Sights, History, Stories and more.
Join me on a sunny April day in London, for a 90 minute guided walk through the streets of the City, the historic heart of London which is not quite the same as Greater London.
The City is a roughly 1 square mile separate administrative district from Greater London, containing the remains of 2000 years of history, from the ancient Roman town walls of Londinium, up to the most modern-looking glass skyscrapers.
Of course we can't see everything in just 90 minutes, so this is just a selection of sights, but I aim to post more vids in the future.
-Ignore me saying it's a 2 hour walk at the start, it turned out 90mins in the end :)

The wall around the Roman city of London, Londinium, was built in around the year 200AD. It ran from Tower Hill in the East to Moorgate in the North and the close to the River Fleet in the West. Our walk starts at Tower Hill close to the Tower of London with one of the most impressive and imposing sections of the Roman Wall. The bottom four metres of this wall is still the original Roman structure with the higher levels added in the middle ages. We then go along Coopers Row where we can see the next section of Roman stone work before going along Vine Street and Jewry Street to Aldgate.

Teatime Talk - St Helens, City of London - Shakespeare to Skyscraper
In support of a book on the life of Shakespeare during the time he lived within the parish of St Helens in the City of London (around the last 5 years of the 16th century), we have created a time sequenced set of maps for the parish from the original church and nunnery through to the modern day.
There are many references to local features in works produced by Shakespeare around this time, including the 'two-bucket well' and the nunnery itself. But it has always been an area of continual change while at the same time retaining links to the past through the church and the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers.
We'll have a brief tour using the maps to show what still exists from Shakespeare's time to the latest landmark buildings such as 100 Bishopsgate (181 metres and 37 storeys tall) and ...

From here we go along Houndsditch and Bevis Marks to Bishopsgate, one of the Gates into the Roman City. At Bishopsgate we follow London Wall and see fragments in the old churchyard of St Alphege before passing through the site of Cripplegate into the Barbican. Here we find another section of the Roman wall near St Giles Cripplegate with a medieval tower. We then pass through the Museum of London and see our last fragment of the wall in Noble Street.
Our route takes us down Kind Edward Street to Newgate then down Warwick Lane, which was a mistake as we should have gone to the corner of Newgate and Old Bailey and walked South from here. The London Wall Walk then crosses Ludgate Hill and worked its way down the old lanes to Queen Victoria street not far from where the North bank of the Thames would have been in Roman London.

We'll have a brief tour using the maps to show what still exists from Shakespeare's time to the latest landmark buildings such as 100 Bishopsgate (181 metres and 37 storeys tall) and the new 22 Bishopsgate described as a 'vertical village in the heart of London'.
