Psychogeography - A drift through downtown Vancouver
Public space can be said to be "a place where anyone has a right to come without being excluded because of economic or social conditions." Yet, within a buffer zone of as little as a city block, a hierarchy of social dividers split up the downtown core. Although not always explicit, these invisible dividers cause subconscious resistance and direct motion within city flow. By throwing dice and using their result as a direction and distance, while also letting myself be drawn to points of interest and encounters with urban topography, these dividers were broken down and exploited. Within the boundaries of only a few blocks, I experienced massive change in social structure and a directly proportional relationship with its respective architecture. From crowded, wide sidewalks where everyone is in a hurry, to bamboo and vine pergolas sheltering a narrow passage in the middle of the city, urban paths of greatly varying resistance manifested themselves. Beautiful architecture drew me to the feet of magnificent structures to interact with and behold. Identifying these boundaries and their substratum actualized a new perspective of the downtown core. The organizational layout of downtown Vancouver, whether intentional or not, is intricately redeveloped and implemented by it dwellers who break in their daily paths on a regular basis, following "the path of least resistance."

"Psychogeography: a beginner's guide. Unfold a street map of (Edmonton), place a glass, rim down, anywhere on the map, and draw round its edge. Psychogeography: A short derive through Leicester City Centre
This is my short Psychogeographic derive through the Leicester shopping centre. I did this derive in the daytime, that way I was able to capture all of the hustle and bustle of the shoppers preparing for Christmas. On my journey I mapped the different feelings I had whenever I go near a building which catches my attention. I recorded the journey on my phone and also took photos on my phone, I chose this as it was convenient, also it seemed more real as the camera was not be steady. In addition I was effectively be able to document peoples normal behaviour as they were not be aware I was filming so did not alter their behaviour. The rules of my journey meant I was only able to walk from the google maps marker following the road towards the clock tower. I kept track of how the atmosphere changed in a small space of time, as I walked up the road the atmosphere was a lot different and near the clock tower the atmosphere continued to change. It felt dark and dingy walking down the first road but as I continued towards the shops it brightened up and the people seemed to be more lively. I didn't stick rigidly to any of the rules I set myself before hand- I initially decided that I should stick to walking in a straight line, then I changed my mind and decided to follow the road towards the clock tower, I didn't walk straight towards the clock tower however, I drifted towards buildings which caught my attention. PS Apologies for the footage, it was filmed on an extremely outdated ...

psycho/geography exhibition at Newlyn
psycho/geography was a changing exhibition of work curated by four artists, Rupert White, Nigel Ayers, Daryl Waller and Paul Chaney, with Steve Messam, using the collective name 'GreenCube'. The artists are all interested in exposing the deep psychological and political content inherent in the landscape and our experience of place. Though connecting with environmental issues, their work goes beyond the simple moral imperatives implied by the green agenda, and instead explores related areas of fantasy, desire and imagination.
