Wakes week often now referred to as Preston holidays is a century old tradition dating back to Industrial Lancashire. Different industrial towns would have holidays staggered through the summer with Preston Mills closing down for the last two weeks in July, armies of workers would flock to the seaside for what was hard fought for holidays which were often unpaid with many saving in a holiday club each year - you can see them here in 1925 starting their journey at Preston train station, also look out for the tram on Fishergate.

Newborn Wakes MUM from Week Long Coma

The emotional video shows the moment that new mum was introduced to her baby for the first time after her daughter's cries woke her from a week-long coma.
Shelly Cawley, from Charlotte in North Carolina, was losing the fight for life after a blood clot in her leg forced an emergency cesarean to deliver her baby and sent her into a coma.
But miraculously Shelly was awakened from the coma a week later, when a nurse came up with an ingenious idea.
Speaking to USA Today, Shelly said: "One of the last things I clearly remember is laying on the stretcher to take me back to the operating room and I was crying."
"I was telling the doctors that I was scared that I wasn't going to wake up from my surgery," she continued.
After it seemed like there was little hope left for Shelly, a member of the nursing team at Carolina's Medical Center suggested placing the baby on Shelly's chest as she slept.
Nurse Ashley Manus said: "We knew skin to skin contact is very beneficial to an infant, so we thought, why not try it for a mum?"
But as soon as baby Rylan was placed next to her mother, she drifted straight off to sleep.
Shelly's husband Jeremy then took it upon himself to poke, prod and tickle Rylan until she finally made some noise.
Jeremy said: "Once she started crying out, I think it really got inside Shelly and woke her up."
The video shows the emotional moment the new mum was reunited with her baby girl for the first time.
Although still heavily medicated, Shelly cannot tear her eyes away from her daughter and nods convincingly each time her husband asks her if she's happy.

In May 2015 MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies and MA Arts Management, Policy and Practice students from the University of Manchester worked with the Manchester Central Library to curate a new interactive exhibition and an exciting series of events - together the cultural creations were called 'Manchester Wakes'.
Inspired by the tradition of 'Wakes Week', which saw factory workers travelling around the UK to enjoy family holidays by the sea, the project involved local historical stories, absorbing musical performances and engaging community activities.
The exhibition titled 'Wonderland by the Waves' saw students from the university's MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies bring together historical pieces from a range of Northern museums. The live event Workers at Play delivered diverse musical performances curated by MA Arts Management students and former 'Inspiral Carpets' front man Tom Hingley.
The project brought the newly refurbished Library and University together in support of the local cultural scene and provided real-world experience and responsibility for the region's developing industry professionals.

Wakes week
The wakes week is a holiday period in parts of England and Scotland. Originally a religious celebration or feast, the tradition of the wakes week developed into a secular holiday, particularly in the north west of England during the industrial revolution. In Scotland each city has a “trades fortnight” two weeks in the summer when tradesmen take their holidays.
Although a strong tradition during the 19th and 20th centuries, the observance of the holiday has almost disappeared in recent times due to the decline of the manufacturing industries in the United Kingdom and the standardisation of school holidays across England.
History
In 601 AD Pope Gregory I wrote a letter to Mellitus (a member of the Gregorian mission sent to England to convert the Anglo-Saxons from their native paganism to Christianity) which read:
When, therefore, Almighty God shall bring you to the most reverend man our brother bishop, St Augustine, tell him what I have, upon mature deliberation on the affair of the English, thought of; namely, that the temples of the idols in that nation ought not to be destroyed. Let holy water be made, and sprinkled in the said temples; let altars be erected, and let relics be deposited in them. For since those temples are built, it is requisite that they be converted from the worship of the devils to the service of the true God; that the nation, not seeing those temples destroyed, may remove error from their hearts, and knowing and adoring the true God, may the more familiarly resort to the same places to which they have been accustomed. Speaking to USA Today, Shelly said: "One of the last things I clearly remember is laying on the stretcher to take me back to the operating room and I was crying."
"I was telling the doctors that I was scared that I wasn't going to wake up from my surgery," she continued.
After it seemed like there was little hope left for Shelly, a member of the nursing team at Carolina's Medical Center suggested placing the baby on Shelly's chest as she slept.
Nurse Ashley Manus said: "We knew skin to skin contact is very beneficial to an infant, so we thought, why not try it for a mum?"
But as soon as baby Rylan was placed next to her mother, she drifted straight off to sleep.
Shelly's husband Jeremy then took it upon himself to poke, prod and tickle Rylan until she finally made some noise.
Jeremy said: "Once she started crying out, I think it really got inside Shelly and woke her up."
The video shows the emotional moment the new mum was reunited with her baby girl for the first time.
Although still heavily medicated, Shelly cannot tear her eyes away from her daughter and nods convincingly each time her husband asks her if she's happy.

In May 2015 MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies and MA Arts Management, Policy and Practice students from the University of Manchester worked with the Manchester Central Library to curate a new interactive exhibition and an exciting series of events - together the cultural creations were called 'Manchester Wakes'.
Inspired by the tradition of 'Wakes Week', which saw factory workers travelling around the UK to enjoy family holidays by the sea, the project involved local historical stories, absorbing musical performances and engaging community activities.
The exhibition titled 'Wonderland by the Waves' saw students from the university's MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies bring together historical pieces from a range of Northern museums. The live event Workers at Play delivered diverse musical performances curated by MA Arts Management students and former 'Inspiral Carpets' front man Tom Hingley.
The project brought the newly refurbished Library and University together in support of the local cultural scene and provided real-world experience and responsibility for the region's developing industry professionals.

ITEM ONE:
The Prime Minister has again relented to public opinion and is now backing a move to include the Red Peak flag design as a referendum option.
The Government is pushing ahead to replace the New Zealand flag with one of four preferential designs put before a referendum.
The Red Peak design was excluded from the final four, and it requires a law change for it to be placed before the public as a contender.
The first referendum (held from November 20 to December 11 this year) will ask New Zealanders to rank the alternative flags. The winner will then run-off against the current flag in a second referendum held between March 3 to March 24 2016..
A New Zealand Herald online poll shows little support for the final four replacement flag options.
But the Red Peak design continues to be the favoured option for 50% of those who voted. The current flag was supported by 28%. (at the time of writing this 3050 people had voted in the unscientific online poll).
On Wednesday John Key said he wanted the Red Peak option included in the referendum. He applauded the Green Party for presenting legislation supporting its inclusion, and criticised Labour and New Zealand First for blocking the Green Party's move and for playing politics on the issue - something the Prime Minister has also been criticised for.
Key confirmed that National will pick up the Green Party bill to ensure he public is able to vote for Red Peak should they chose to.
On Wednesday afternoon Key said: "In the end, I'm not wanting to be the one that stands in the way of people having some choice." He said Parliament will go into urgency to force the way forward for the Red Peak Flag design.
It's classic John Key politics. He manoeuvres with ease around tricky political issues. Once public opinion is clear on an issue, he commits to a U-turn without blinking, without a moment's hesitation, to get in beside the public and present as the saviour, the solution to a problem.
ITEM TWO:
East coast North Island communities in New Zealand were awoken by a rolling 5.1 earthquake this morning. No reports of damage.
ITEM THREE
Rugby World Cup. Australia showed a few first game jitters but pulled off a decisive win against Fiji over night. Australia is showing form. The All Blacks looked rattled by Argentina in New Zealand's opening game on Monday morning, but came through strong in the end to win 26 to 16.
On Friday the All Blacks play Namibia with a fresh B-side captained by 23 year-old open-side flanker Sam Cane. Cane is positioned to be the likely replacement for All Blacks captain Richie McCaw once he retires and many are reading into this move that the All Blacks coaching-squad see him as a future All Black captain as well.
Other interesting games coming up include: South Africa V Samoa on Sunday, and England V Wales also on Sunday. This game will give us a good idea of the true form of both England and Wales and how they stack up against Australia (the Wallabies are currently rated at number two in World Rugby behind the All Blacks).
