Aghadrumsee (from Irish: Achadh Dhruim Saileach meaning "field of the ridge of sallows") is a small village in south-eastern County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Historically the town of Clones has had a significant influence on this rural community mainly due to the railway which used to go through it.
The earliest known spelling of Aghadrumsee is Aghadromsillagh in 1609, and its modern Irish translation (Achadh Dhruim Saileach) is based on this earlier name. This is derived from the Gaelic words: achadh meaning field; druim meaning ridge, and saileach meaning sallow. This would give it the meaning of "field of the ridge of sallows".
The see syllable in the current spelling of Aghadrumsee is a homophone of sidhe. This gives Aghadrumsee its folklore meaning of 'field of the fairy hillock.'
Aghadrumsee comes under the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic dioceses of Clogher. The parish of Aghadrumsee straddles the border town of Clones, County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland.

Aghakeeran
Aghakeeran (from Irish: Achadh Chaorthainn meaning "field of rowan trees") is a townland near Derrygonnelly, in the civil parish of Devenish, barony of Magheraboy, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
The first recorded instance of the townland's name is from the Ordnance Survey map of 1609 where it is spelt Aghakerin. Another recorded form is Aghakiran from the 1659 census of Ireland, where it is stated as being in the parish of Devonish and was under the tituladoes of one Cohanagh McGuire
This townland also used be part of the Boho area (1842) and also the parish of Botha but this position has vacillated over the years. Since 1851 Aghakeeran has been in the civil parish of Devenish.

Aghanaglack
Aghanaglack or Aghnaglack (from Irish: Achadh na Glaice meaning "field of the hollow"), is a townland situated in Boho, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
In 1938 a cairn was excavated in the townland of Aghanaglack, Boho ("Glack") by Prof. Oliver Davies which proved to be a "double court tomb" which dates from 4000–2000 BC. The tomb is located at an altitude of 222 m (728 ft) (Grid ref: H097 435) in a clearing in a local plantation (formerly a bog) known as Ballintempo Forest. This site has easy access and provides good views on of the surrounding countryside. The tomb consists of twin galleries aligned east-west, one of which has a length of 4 metres, terminating in a 2-metre-tall stone and the other about 1 metre ending in the bedrock. The tomb was found to contain Bronze Age and Stone Age items, pots, arrowheads and the remains of two children some of which can be found on display at the Enniskillen museum.
Other features of interest in the area include Aghnaglack Cave, the shaft of a medieval High Cross and the mass rock in the sub-townland of Carrickanalter.

Armagh

Armagh (

It is a site of historical importance for both Celtic paganism and Christianity and is the seat, for both the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of Ireland, of the Archbishop of Armagh. In 1995, Armagh city was twinned with Razgrad, Bulgaria.
Although classed as a medium-sized town, Armagh was granted city status by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994. Its population of 14,590 (2001 Census) makes it the least-populated city in both Northern Ireland and on the island of Ireland and the fourth smallest in the United Kingdom.
Eamhain Mhacha (or Navan Fort) at the city's edge, is believed to have been used as an ancient pagan ritual or ceremonial site. According to Irish mythology it was once the capital of Ulster, until it was abandoned during the 1st century. The site was named after the goddess Macha, and as the settlement grew on the hills nearby, it was also named after the goddess — Ard Mhacha means "Macha's height". This name was later anglicised as Ardmagh, which eventually became Armagh.

Arney

Arney (from Irish: an Arna) is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It lies to the southwest of Enniskillen, between the village of Bellanaleck and the Five Points crossroads. Arney takes its name from the Arney River that feeds Lough Erne. It had a population of 114 people (along with Skea) in the 2001 Census.

Badger Pot
Coordinates: 54°14′31″N 7°40′05″W / 54.242°N 7.668°W Badger Pot and Pigeon Pot are two caves found in the Karst topography on the eastern slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain, south of Florencecourt Forest Park, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
They are sourced from small rivers which, at each pot, sink below ground. Dye tracing has linked these sinks to the underground river of the Prod's Pot–Cascades cave system. This river in turn rises at Cladagh Glen and feeds into the Cladagh River, before ultimately discharging into Upper Lough Erne.
The dye tracing has also proved a further underground link to Shannon Pot in County Cavan, suggesting that the latter may once have had a substantially larger catchment area.

Ballinamallard

Ballinamallard or Bellanamallard (from Irish: Béal Átha na Mallacht meaning "ford-mouth of the curses") is a small village and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It had a population of 1,340 people in the 2001 Census. It lies to the north of Enniskillen and is within the Fermanagh District Council area.
The village has won several "best kept village" titles, and has a fountain to mark the honour. There has been only one local primary school: Ballinamallard Controlled Primary School, since the other, Shanmullagh Primary School, closed in August 2008.
Ballinamallard was the home to ancestors of author Rudyard Kipling and politician Stanley Baldwin. The wives of influential artists Edward Burne-Jones and Edward Poynter also had roots in the village.. In the early 20th century, thousands of Cooneyites or "Dippers", followers of Edward Cooney and William Irvine, flocked to religious conventions at Crocknacrieve House near Ballinamallard. Converts were baptised by immersing them in Lough Erne or tributary rivers, events which attracted large crowds and international attention.

Ballycassidy

Ballycassidy (from Irish: Baile Uí Chaiside, meaning "Ó Caiside's town") is a small village and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It lies northwest of Enniskillen on the eastern shore of Lower Lough Erne. In the 2001 Census it had (with Laragh and Trory) a population of 315 people.
Ballycassidy is a small rural community, consisting mainly of scattered homes, the Balcas Sawmill and rich farm land along the Ballycassidy River. There is no pub or grocery store, only a post office.
In the 14th century, there was a church in Ballycassidy. A holy well in the area was associated with Saint Molaise who founded the monastery on nearby Devinish.
There is also a racehorse called Ballycassidy, named after the village, who was trained in Wales by Peter Bowen. The horse is notorious for a spectacular fall at Valentines Brook in the 2006 Grand National at Aintree. He won 16 races over his career and became a favourite with racing fans. He was retired from racing under rules in 2008, but did go on to race in Point to Points, ridden by the then amateur jockey Donal Devereux. Ballycassidy remains at the Peter Bowen stables.

Ballyclare

Ballyclare (historically Bellaclare, from Irish: Bealach Cláir meaning "pass of the plain") is a small town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It had a population of 8,770 people in the 2001 Census. Under the reorganisation of Northern Ireland local government in 1973, Ballyclare lost its urban district status and became part of Newtownabbey Borough.
It sits on the river Six Mile Water with Craig Hill providing a wooded backdrop to the east. Its medieval origins can still be seen in Ballyclare Motte, which is to the south of the town. The broad main street dates from the 18th century. A clock tower is a central focus within the town and the old mill marks the industrial district on the south east developed along the Six Mile Water. It is a local service centre with a significant dormitory role in relation to Belfast. It is the main focus within the rural area for housing, shopping and commerce, industry and employment, education and recreation.

Ballymena

Ballymena (from Irish: an Baile Meánach, meaning "the middle townland" [ənˠ ˈbˠalʲə ˈmʲaːnˠəx]) is a large town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland and the seat of Ballymena Borough Council. Ballymena had a population of 28,717 people in the 2001 Census.
The town is built on land given to the Adair family by King Charles I in 1626, on the basis that the town hold two annual fairs and a free Saturday market in perpetuity. As of 2011, the Saturday market still runs.
The town used to host Ireland’s largest one-day agricultural show at the Ballymena Showgrounds. There are still many historic buildings in the town. The Town Hall was built in 1924 on the site of the old Market House, and was refurbished in 2007 at a cost of roughly £20 million.
The recorded history of the Ballymena area dates to the Early Christian period from the 5th to the 7th centuries. Ringforts found in the townland of Ballykeel and a site known as Camphill Fort in the townland of Ballee may also have been of this type. There are a number of souterrain sites within a 1¼ mile (2 km) radius of the centre of Ballymena.

Ballymoney

The town hosts the Ballymoney Drama Festival, the oldest drama festival in Ireland, which was founded in 1933.
Ballymoney has expanded in recent years and a lot of new houses have been built. This is primarily as a result of high house prices in the Coleraine/Portstewart/Portrush 'Triangle' areas shifting first-time buyers to the less expensive Ballymoney area. Ballymoney is located on the main road between Coleraine and Ballymena, with good road and rail connections to the main cities in Northern Ireland, Belfast and Derry.
The Ballymoney area has the highest life expectancy of any area in Northern Ireland, with the average male life expectancy at birth being 78.0 years and 82.6 years for females.

Ballyshannon
Ballyshannon (Irish: Béal Átha Seanaidh, meaning "The Mouth of Seannachs ford") is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. It is located at the southern end of the county where the N3 and N15 cross the River Erne, and claims to be the oldest town in Ireland.
Ballyshannon, which means "The Mouth of Seannach's Ford", after a fifth century warrior, Seannach, who was slain there, lies at the mouth of the river Erne. Just west of the town, the Erne widens and its waters meander over a long sandy estuary. The northern bank of the river rises steeply away from the riverbank, while the southern bank is flat with a small cliff that runs parallel to the river. From its idyllic setting, the town looks out over the estuary and has panoramic views of mountains, lakes and forests.
Archaeological sites dating as far back as the Neolithic period (4000 BC – 2500 BC) have been excavated in Ballyshannon and surrounding areas, representing settlement and ritual activity from early periods of human settlement. Finds have ranged from fulachta fiadh (burnt mounds) dating from the Bronze Age (2500–500 BC), to a possible brushwood trackway thought to date to an earlier Neolithic period, to the recent discovery of a previously unknown medieval church and cemetery containing hundreds of skeletons thought to date from between 1100 and 1400. This site yielded numerous artifacts including silver long cross pennies and halfpennies dating from the reign of Henry III (1251–1276) and Edward I (c.1280–1302). Other finds included bone beads, shroud pins, and pieces of quartz which were found placed in the hands of many of the skeletons.

Banbridge (

/bænˈbrɪdʒ/ ban-BRIJ) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies on the River Bann and the A1 road. It was named after a bridge built over the Bann in 1712. The town grew as a coaching stop on the road from Belfast to Dublin and thrived from Irish linen manufacturing. Its population was 14,744 people in the 2001 Census though is said to have raised in population by a fifth since then, suggesting a population of around 18,000. The town is the headquarters for Banbridge District Council.
The town's main street is very unusual, and rises to a steep hill before levelling out. In 1834 an underpass was made, apparently because horses with heavy loads would faint before reaching the top of the hill. It was built by William Dargan and is officially named 'Downshire Bridge', though it is often called 'The Cut'.
Banbridge, home to the "Star of the County Down", is a relatively young town. The town grew up around the site where the main road from Belfast to Dublin crossed the River Bann over an Old Bridge which was situated where the present bridge now stands.

It is on the County Fermanagh/County Cavan border beside the village of Blacklion in the Republic of Ireland. It had a population (with Holywell) of 486 in the 2001 Census.
The Lough MacNean Tourism Initiative has been in operation since 2003, and is an economy building project, aimed at addressing tourism needs in the area while promoting cross-border relations. Belcoo Enterprise Ltd opened in 1992 in units shared with the Belcoo Historical Society, a doctor's surgery, a chiropodist and Lakeland Community Care. The Mullycovet corn mill, which functioned from 1830 until the 1920s, is being restored. The Indigenous Resources School of Transferable Skills aims to teach marginalised groups including the unemployed, New Age travellers, the disabled, to use natural materials as a learning facility.

Blaney

Blaney (from Irish: Bléinigh meaning "creeks") is a small village and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It lies on the southern shore of Lower Lough Erne, 14 km (8.7 mi) west of Enniskillen. It is within the Fermanagh District Council area.
The area takes its name from the Irish word "Bléan" which means a creek. The suggestion that it derives from the Blayneys of Castleblayney originates in an inaccurate statement in Livingstone's History of Fermanagh.^{[citation needed]} Blaney Bay, on Lough Erne was a good location for prospective settlers, thus Tully Castle was founded by Sir John Hume in 1619. When it was sacked in the Irish Rebellion of 1641 by Rory Maguire, the family seat was replaced nearby with Castle Hume Hall designed by Richard Cassels.
Until 1987, Ely Lodge, named after Lord Ely, was a summer retreat for the Duke and Duchess of Westminster and their children. It is now a private residence. A flying boat base was built by the Americans at Ely Lodge in 1941 and American troops were based there from 1942 to 1944.

Boa Island
Boa Island (from Irish: Badhbha) is an island near the north shore of Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is 25 kilometres (15.5 mi) from Enniskillen town.
It is the largest island in Lough Erne, approximately 5 miles (8 km) long, and relatively narrow. The A47 road goes through the length of the island. This road joins each end of the island to the mainland by bridges leading west toward Castle Caldwell and east toward Kesh.
The Boa Island carved stones, graveyard, and enclosure are Scheduled Historic Monuments sited in the townland of Dreenan, in Fermanagh District Council area, at grid ref: H0852 6197. The Lustymore stone figure was moved here in 1939 from the nearby island of that name. The oldest stone monument on the island is a denuded cairn at Inishkeeragh Bridge near the southern tip of the island.
Boa Island is named after Badhbh, sometimes spelled, Badb, the Celtic goddess of war. Badhbh sometimes took the form of a Carrion Crow, most notably on the shoulder of the warrior, Cúchulainn, after he died in battle. At other times she is depicted as a wolf.

/brʊkˈbʌrə/) is a village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It lies about eleven miles east of Enniskillen, just off the A4 trunk road, and about five miles west of the County Tyrone boundary.
According to the 2001 Census, Brookeborough had a population of 517. The economy is heavily dependent on cattle and sheep farming. The village is in the parish of Aghavea, which is part of the Diocese of Clogher. There are five places of Christian worship; a Roman Catholic chapel, a Methodist church (built in 1839), an Elim Pentecostal church, a Church of Ireland church and a Baptist church; three public houses; and two primary (elementary) schools.
The Boer War memorial at the head of the town was carved by a local man named Harte in 1901. Behind it is the Lady Brooke Memorial Hall of the same date, a period building preserving all its original features including a clocktower and transverse stained glass window panels.

Bundoran
Bundoran (Irish: Bun Dobhráin) is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. The town is located on the N15 road near Ballyshannon, 3 hours drive from Dublin. The town is well known as a popular seaside resort, and is a popular surfing area.
Bundoran, or as it is known in Irish Bun Dobhráin (which means the foot of the little water), was, up until over a century ago, two separate villages. Bundoran was the village west of the bridge over the River Bradoge. This area is now called the West End. East of the bridge, about 2 kilometres (1 mile) away, was the village of Single Street. In between these two separate communities was the townland of Drumacrin. The area of Drumcacrin is now part of what is today's town centre. Single Street was where most of the local population lived. It was only after completion of the Enniskillen and Bundoran Railway in 1868, which opened a terminus that it called Bundoran, that the two distinct communities developed and merged to what are today called Bundoran.
The first official record of Bundoran is in a deposition by Hugh Gaskein on May 16, 1653. He was a witness to events during the 1641 Rebellion when he was an apprentice butcher in Sligo.William Cole, Viscount Enniskillen, built Bundoran Lodge, his summer home, in 1777. This building still stands on Bayview Avenue and is now called Homefield House. The Viscount seems to have started a trend amongst his contemporaries as more of them discovered Bundoran and visited it to enjoy the seaside and what were believed to be its health benefits.

Carrickfergus

Carrickfergus (from Irish: Carraig Fhearghais, meaning "rock of Fergus"), known locally and colloquially as "Carrick", is a large town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is located on the north shore of Belfast Lough, 11 miles (18 km) from Belfast. The town had a population of 27,201 at the 2001 Census and takes its name from Fergus Mór mac Eirc, the 6th century king of Dál Riata. It is County Antrim's oldest town and one of the oldest settlements in Northern Ireland as a whole. Carrickfergus is the administrative centre for Carrickfergus Borough Council and forms part of the Belfast Metropolitan Area.
The town is the subject of the classic Irish folk song "Carrickfergus", a 19th century translation of an Irish-language song (Do Bhí Bean Uasal) from Munster, which begins with the words, "I wish I was in Carrickfergus."
The British peerage title of Baron Carrickfergus, which had become extinct in 1883, was bestowed upon Prince William on his wedding day on 29 April 2011.

Carryduff

Carryduff (from Irish: Ceathrú Aodha Dhuibh, meaning "Black Hugh's quarter") is a small town and townland in County Down, Northern Ireland, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south of Belfast city centre. It had a population of 6,595 people in the 2001 Census.
Most of the settlement lies within the townland of Carryduff, although part of it extends into the neighbouring townlands of Killynure and Mealough. Local churches built there include Saint Ignatius' Church of Ireland, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Carryduff Presbyterian Church. Carryduff has twice been awarded the Best Kept Small Town by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council.

Castle Balfour
Castle Balfour is a castle situated just off the Main Street of Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is situated in the townland of Castle Balfour Demesne. It was built in 1618 by the Balfours when Sir Michael Balfour took control of the town in the Plantation of Ulster. The castle was inhabited right up to the early 19th century and is currently undergoing a restoration program.

Castle Coole
Castle Coole (pronounced cool, from Irish: Cúl) is a townland and a late-18th-century neo-classical mansion situated in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
Set in a 1200 acre (5 km²) wooded estate, it is one of three properties owned and managed by the National Trust in County Fermanagh, the others being Florence Court and the Crom Estate.
The Castle Coole estate was purchased in 1656 by the Belfast merchant John Corry, grandfather of the first Earl. The estate is named for Lough Coole (from Irish Gaelic cúil, 'seclusion'), a lake surrounded by the Killynure hills. A ráth here and a crannog in Lough Coole itself are reminders that the area has been settled since prehistoric times. Other lakes on the estate include Lough Yoan and Brendrum Lough.
Castle Coole was constructed between 1789 and 1798 as the summer retreat of Armar Lowry-Corry, the 1st Earl Belmore. Lord Belmore was the Member of Parliament for County Tyrone in the former Irish Houses of Parliament in Dublin and a wealthy heir to 70,000 acres (283 km²) of land throughout Ireland, acquired by ancestors with a successful background in merchantry. The income generated by the estates allowed Castle Coole to be constructed at a cost of £57,000 in 1798, equivalent to approximately £20 million today. The siting on the comparatively small 1200 acre (5 km²) estate in County Fermanagh was primarily due to its unspoilt rural location and natural beauty amongst ancient oak woodland and small lakes, yet with proximity to the market town of Enniskillen for the domestic labour necessary for a large mansion. Additionally, several smaller family residences had been built on the Castle Coole estate preceding the mansion, including a dwelling of the King James period (later deliberately destroyed by fire) and a Queen Anne house built in 1709.

Clogherbog is a townland situated on the south west side of Boho in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It contains the sub-townlands of Carrickrory, Lough Nacloyduff, Loughanquin, Loughnamanfin and Tullylaur.
The area is notable for the discovered remnants of ancient civilisations, including an Iron Age wooden cauldron and the lettered cave at Lough Nacloyduff (the lake of the dark caverns), which contains primitive inscriptions. The origins of this cave have been speculated on since a visit by William Wakeman in 1850.
Other features include the Mass rock which is inscribed with the date of 1777 and the Lake of the Fair Woman (Irish: Loch na mban fionn) which is the subject of an old tale.

Coalisland

Coalisland is a small town in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, with a population of 4,917 people (in the 2001 Census). As its name suggests, it was formerly a centre for coal mining.
On 24 August 1968, the Campaign for Social Justice (CSJ), the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA), and other groups, held the first 'civil rights march' in Northern Ireland from Coalisland to Dungannon. The rally was officially banned, but took place and passed off without incident. The publicity surrounding the march encouraged other protesting groups to form branches of the NICRA.
From 1969 to 2001, a total of 20 people were shot in or near Coalisland as part of the Troubles. The British Army killed a total of 8 people, 7 of whom were IRA members (see below) and one a Catholic civilian, and the IRA in turn killed 2 British soldiers, 3 RUC policemen, 3 UDR soldiers, 1 ex-UDR soldier, and 2 Catholic civilians, all in separate incidents. The UVF was responsible for the murder of 1 Catholic in the nearby town of Aughamullan.

It is 55 miles (88.5 km) northwest of Belfast and 30 miles (48.3 km) east of Derry, both of which are linked by major roads and railway connections. City of Derry Airport, 25 miles (40.2 km) to the west, Belfast International Airport, the main regional airport to the south and George Best Belfast City Airport to the south–east are all relatively accessible from Coleraine.
Coleraine had a population of 24,042 people in the 2001 Census. Disposable income is well above the Northern Ireland average. The North Coast (Coleraine and Limavady) area has the highest property prices in Northern Ireland, higher indeed than those of affluent South Belfast. Championship golf courses, scenic countryside and a host of leisure facilities and attractions are all on the doorstep. It has an attractive town centre, a marina and the prestigious Riverside theatre. Coleraine, during the day is a busy town, however at night the town is relatively quiet, with much of the night life in the area located in the nearby seaside towns of Portrush and Portstewart.

Comber

Comber (from Irish: an Comar, meaning "the confluence") is a small town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies 5 miles south of Newtownards, at the northern end of Strangford Lough. It had a population of 8,933 people in the 2001 Census. Comber is part of the Borough of Ards. It is also known for Comber Whiskey which was last distilled in 1953.
The confluence of two rivers, which gave the town its name, is that of the Glen River and the Enler River which meet here. There is believed to have been a church here since the time of St Patrick, while a Cistercian abbey was founded around 1200 on the site of the present Church of Ireland church, a site likely chosen to take advantage of the good access to Strangford Lough. After Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1541, the abbey fell into ruins and its stone has since been used in other buildings.
During the influx of Scots in the early 1600s (see Plantation of Ulster), a settlement grew up at Comber, although it was focused about a mile further south than at present, in the townland of Cattogs, and there is evidence that the settlement was a port used by traders and fishermen. By the 1700s, however, the focus of the town had moved to the area of the present main Square and Comber became established as an industrial centre with several mills.

Cookstown

Cookstown is a town and townland in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is the fourth largest town in the county and had a population of nearly 11,000 people in the 2001 Census. It is one of the main towns in the area of Mid-Ulster. It was founded around 1620 when the townlands in the area were leased by an English ecclesiastical lawyer, Dr. Alan Cooke, from the Archbishop of Armagh, who had been granted the lands after the Flight of the Earls. It was one of the main centres of the linen industry West of the River Bann, and until 1956, the processes of flax spinning, weaving, bleaching and beetling were carried out in the town.
Cookstown's famous main street (laid out from c1735–c1800), is 1.25 miles (2.01 km) long and 135 feet (41.15 m) wide, one of the longest, and widest in Ireland.

Created by Tony Warren, Coronation Street was first broadcast on 9 December 1960. The show has been on the air for over 51 years. Craigavon

Craigavon is a settlement in north County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It was a planned settlement that was begun in 1965 and named after Northern Ireland's first Prime Minister — James Craig, 1st Viscount Craigavon. It was intended to be a linear city incorporating Lurgan and Portadown, but this plan mostly failed and less than half of the proposed work was finished. Among locals today, "Craigavon" refers to the mainly residential area between the two towns.
Craigavon sometimes refers to the much larger Craigavon Urban Area, which includes "Craigavon Centre, Brownlow, Lurgan, Portadown, Waringstown and Bleary" – with a population of 57,685.

Cuilcagh
Cuilcagh, historically Slieve Cuilcagh (from Irish: Sliabh Chuilceach/Binn Chuilceach, meaning "chalky mountain/chalky peak"), is the highest mountain in the Breifne area and the 165th highest on the island of Ireland . The summit lies on the border between County Fermanagh (in Northern Ireland) and County Cavan (in the Republic of Ireland), and is the highest point in both counties. Water from the southern slope flows underground until it emerges some miles away in the Shannon Pot, the traditional source of the River Shannon.
Cuilcagh Mountain has one of the largest expanses of blanket bog in Northern Ireland, on a relatively high elevation upland landscape, bounded by limestone grassland to the north and montane habitats to the south. The blanket bog exhibits a wide range of characteristic vegetation and structural features, with well-developed pool, hummock and lawn features, acid flushes and bog bursts. The bog vegetation is characterised by luxuriant Sphagnum mosses but over most of the site dwarf-shrubs and graminoid herbaceous species dominate. The Cuilcagh area supports a rich assemblage of upland insects, and is one of the most important sites in Ireland for these species. Species recorded include the water beetles Agabus melanarius, Agabus arcticus, Dytiscus lapponicus, Stictotarsus multilineatus, Hydroporus longicornis and Hydroporus morio and the water bugs Glaenocorisa propinqua and Callicorixa wollastoni. Lough Atona is the main locality for these species.

Derrygonnelly

Derrygonnelly (from Irish: Doire Ó gConaíle, meaning "O'Connelly's oak grove") is a small village and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Near Lower Lough Erne, the village was home to 594 people (at the 2001 Census) and dates to the Plantation era.
The village has a long history of Irish traditional music and each year in early October there is a celebration of local talent in memory of the late musicians Eddie Duffy and Mick Hoy. Musicians come from all over Ireland and from further afield to enjoy this festival which bases itself in any of Derrygonnelly's four pubs.
Derrygonnelly was founded by General Archdale as a Plantation town. The area hosted fairs from the late 18th century but the village itself only really developed as late as 1812 when the long, flat main street was built along the Sillees River. The main road to Enniskillen was known as the Famine Road as it was made during the 1846 famine as a relief scheme.

Derrylin

Derrylin (from Irish: Doire Loinn, meaning "oakgrove of the blackbirds") is a small village and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is on the A509 road between Enniskillen and the border with County Cavan (the N3 road to Dublin). It had a population of 423 in the 2001 Census.
The village has several historical features, including the Callowhill graveyard with headstones dating back to the 17th century. Upper Lough Erne is east of the village, and west is the peak of Slieve Rushen. To the northeast is the limestone hill known as Knockninny Rock (from which the R.C Parish and the Civil Barony takes its name). On its southern slope can be seen the remains of one of the oldest castles belonging to the Maguire Clan, the ancient Lords of Fermanagh.

Derryvore

The Derryvore area first was a part of the Crom Estate, which according to a map survey done in 1719 and 1721 included the townlands of Derrybeg West, Corraharra, and Derryvore.
It includes a Trinity Church (known locally as Crom Church), commissioned by John Crichton, 3rd Earl Erne. It was built in 1842 and expanded to include towers in the 1880s.

Devenish College

Devenish College is a secondary school located in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It lies within the Western Education and Library Board area. The College came about from the amalgamation of Enniskillen High School and Duke of Westminster High School and opened on a split campus in September 2004. In september 2006 the two schools amalgamated onto one campus.
In January 2005, it was announced that a 28-acre (110,000 m²) site on the Tempo Road, Enniskillen, had been acquired for a £15m scheme to build a 700 pupil post primary school to replace school facilities in Kesh and Enniskillen. It was expected to be completed by September 2008 though realistically this is looking increasingly like 2016.

Donaghadee

Downpatrick

It is the county town of Down with a rich history and strong connection to Saint Patrick. It had a population of 10,316 at the 2001 Census. Downpatrick is where Down District Council has its headquarters.
As the largest town in the Lecale area, Downpatrick is a commercial, recreational and administrative centre for the locality and serves as a hub for the nearby towns and villages. Within an hour drive of Belfast, the location serves as a commuter town for a large number of people. The town has a number of primary and post-primary schools educating students from all over the east Down area.
Downpatrick is characterised by the rolling drumlins that are a feature of the Lecale area and a legacy of glaciation during the Pleistocene, the Down drumlins themselves are underlaid by Ordovician and Silurian shales and grits. It also has the distinction of being the lowest place on the island of Ireland, with the marsh surrounding the north east of the town recorded as being 1.3 ft (0.4m) below sea level.^{[citation needed]} Downpatrick is approximately 22 miles (35 km) from Belfast with a regular bus service.

Drumbegger

It contains the sub-townland known as Oubarraghan. The area has been designated an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI 322, 17 August 2009) as a consequence of species-rich wet grassland.
Oubarraghan contains the Arch Cave (Grid ref: H1037 4790) which is an outlet of a series of subterranean passages that originate from Noon's Hole. The river that runs out of this cave is known as the Screenagh, which makes its way through Drumbegger and into the Sillees River.

Drumlaghy

Dundalk
Dundalk (/ˌdʌnˈdɔːlk/, from Irish: Dún Dealgan meaning "Dalgan's stronghold") is the county town of County Louth in Ireland. It is situated where the Castletown River flows into Dundalk Bay. The town is close to the border with Northern Ireland and equidistant from Dublin and Belfast. The town's name, which was historically written as Dundalgan, has associations with the mythical warrior Cú Chulainn. The town's crest reads Mé do rug Cú Chulainn Cróga, meaning "I gave birth to brave Cú Chulainn". It was granted its charter in 1189. Within legally defined boundaries it is the largest town in Ireland (pop. 31,073). It is also the largest by area. Dundalk's rural population is 25,581 giving a combined statistical area of 56,654.
In 2003 Dundalk was amongst nine cities and towns to be designated Gateway status in the Irish Government's National Spatial Strategy.
The Dundalk area has been inhabited since at least 3500 BC, when Neolithic farmers first came to Ireland. A tangible reminder of their presence can still be seen in the form of the Proleek Dolmen, the eroded remains of a megalithic tomb located at Ballymascanlon a few miles to the north of Dundalk. Celtic culture arrived in Ireland around 500 BC. According to the legendary historical accounts, the group settled in North Louth were known as the Conaille Muirtheimhne and took their name from Conaill Carnagh, legendary chief of the Red Branch Knights of Ulster. Their land now forms upper and lower Dundalk.

Dundonald (from Irish: Dún Dónaill, meaning "Dónall's stronghold") is a large settlement in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies east of Belfast and is often deemed to be a suburb of the city. It includes the large housing estate of Ballybeen, and many new housing estates have emerged in the past ten years.
Dundonald refers to a 12th century Norman fort, or Dún, Dún Dónaill, that stood in the town. One of the largest in Ireland, the man-made hill that the fort stood on is still in existence.^{[citation needed]}
Although the mound is commonly referred to as 'the moat' this is, in fact, a corruption of the word 'motte' and refers to the fact that this defensive structure was built in the style of a motte and bailey.^{[citation needed]} St. Elizabeth's Church is located beside the moat, with the Cleland Mausoleum in the adjacent graveyard.^{[citation needed]}
Dundonald acquired rail links to Belfast and Newtownards in 1850, Downpatrick in 1859 and Newcastle in 1869. The rail link with Belfast encouraged Dundonald to expand as a commuter town, but in 1950 the railway line running through Dundonald was closed. Dundonald station was opened on 6 May 1850, but finally closed on 24 April 1950.

Dungannon

Dungannon (from Irish: Dún Geanainn, meaning "Geanann's stronghold") is a medium-sized town in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is the third-largest town in the county (after Omagh and Strabane) and a population of 11,139 people was recorded in the 2001 Census. In August 2006, Dungannon won Ulster In Bloom's Best Kept Town Award for the fifth time. It contains the headquarters of the Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council.
Dungannon's fortunes have been closely tied to that of the O'Neill dynasty which ruled most of Ulster until the seventeenth century and was the most powerful Gaelic family. Dungannon was the clan's main stronghold which made it by default the most important settlement in Gaelic Ireland. The traditional site of inauguration for 'The O'Neill', was Tullyhogue Fort, an Iron Age mound some four miles northeast of Dungannon. The clan O'Hagan were the stewards of this site for the O'Neills.The last castle was located at what is today known as Castle Hill; the location was ideal for a fort as it was one of the highest points in Tyrone, and dominated the surrounding countryside with the ability to see seven counties depending on the weather. Its location ultimately led to the British Army taking over the site for a security installation during The Troubles, only being returned to the local council in August 2007.

Ederney

Ederney or Ederny (from Irish: Eadarnaidh, meaning "middle-place") is a small village and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 554. Ederney lies in the Glendarragh River Valley close to Lower Lough Erne and Kesh. It is 83 miles (134 km) from Belfast, over 100 miles (160 km) from Dublin and about 16 miles from both Omagh and Enniskillen. Ederney and its hinterland (the Glendarragh Valley area) boast a population of several thousand.
Local historian Leo Mulligan MBE details that at the time of the Plantation there was a settlement of significance at Ederney when the land grant (titled "Edernagh") was given to Captain Thomas Blennerhassett of Norfolk in 1610. He created the Manor of Edernagh on a 450 acres (1.8 km²) demesne and a court baron on the shores of Lough Erne, which he later named Castle Hassett. He also established the new village of Ederney (Edernagh). By 1797, the settlement is recorded in the Topographia Hibernica as Ederney Bridge and "fair days" were held there.

It is located almost exactly in the centre of the county between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. It had a population of 13,599 in the 2001 Census. It is the seat of local government for Fermanagh District Council, and is also the county town of Fermanagh as well as its largest town.
The town's name comes from the Irish: Inis Ceithleann. This refers to Cethlenn, a figure in Irish mythology who may have been a goddess. It has been said that Ceithlenn got wounded in battle by an arrow and attempted to swim across the river but she never reached the other side. It has been anglicised many ways over the centuries — Iniskellen, Iniskellin, Iniskillin, Iniskillen, Inishkellen, Inishkellin, Inishkillin, Inishkillen, and so on.
The town's oldest building is the Maguire's stone castle, built by Hugh the Hospitable who died in 1428. An earthwork, the Skonce on the lough shore, may be the remains of an earlier motte. The castle was the stronghold of the junior branch of the Maguires. The first water-gate was built around 1580 by Cú Chonnacht Maguire, though subsequent lowering of the level of the lough has left it without water. The strategic position of the castle made it important for the English to capture it in 1593 for their plantation plans which was achieved by a Captain Dowdall. Maguire then laid siege to it and defeated a relieving force at the Battle of the Ford of the Bicuits at Drumane Bridge. Although the defenders were relieved, Maguire was in possession of the castle from 1595–8 and it wasn't till 1607 that it was finally captured by the English.

Enniskillen Castle
Enniskillen Castle is situated in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It was originally built in the 16th century and now houses the Fermanagh County Museum and the regimental museum of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
The first castle was built on this site by Hugh Maguire in the 16th century. It featured greatly in Irish rebellions against English rule in the 16th century and was taken after an eight day siege in 1594. In 1607 it was remodelled and refurbished by Captain William Cole. The riverside tower at the south, known as the Watergate, was added at this time. In the 18th century the castle was remodelled as the Castle Barracks.
The Castle consists of two sections, a central keep and a curtain wall, and provided the main defence for the west end of the town and guarded the Sligo road. There are strong Scots influences in the design of the castle, particularly of the Watergate, which features two corbelled circular tourelles which were probably built about 1609. Since then it has been substantially rebuilt. It is a State Care Historic Monument, at grid ref: H2315 4422.

Florencecourt is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population (with Drumlaghy) of 135 people. It lies within the Fermanagh District Council area. Historically the area was called Mullanashangan (from Irish: Mullach na Seangán meaning "summit of the ants").
The village itself is extremely small containing only 39 houses, an Orange Lodge Hall and a Doctors surgery. The local shop and Post Office closed on 4 November 2006. The Tully Mill Complex is a group of new buildings built around a renovated corn mill, this complex consists of the Larganess Centre, Tully Mill Bar and Restaurant and the Benaughlin Holiday Cottages.
The first recorded Florencecourt Yew, also known as the Irish Yew was discovered on the slopes of Cuilcagh mountain near Florencecourt before it was transplanted into the grounds of Florence Court House. This tree is still alive today, but it has been severely damaged over the years as cuttings have repeatedly been taken for propagation.

Irvinestown is a village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. In 2008 it had an estimated population of 2,081 people. The most notable building is the ruined 18th century church.
Before the Plantation of Ulster, the area was known as Necarne or Nakerny.^{[citation needed]} The village was founded during the Plantation in 1618 by Sir Gerald Lowther and named Lowtherstown. Ownership later passed to the Irvines of Dumfries and the name changed accordingly.
Irvinestown railway station on the Enniskillen and Bundoran Railway was opened on 13 June 1866 and closed on 1 October 1957.
The village also has a number of sporting organisations such as Irvinestown Wanderers Football Club, St. Molaise's GAA, Irvinestown Tennis Club and more. The Bawnacre leisure centre provides many sporting facilities including squash courts, tennis courts, indoor & outdoor football, indoor gymnasium and sauna / steam room. It is a rich haven of sport and recreation in the area a fact recognised when the long-serving manager George Beacom was given an OBE for services to sport in the local community.

Kilkeel

Kilkeel (from Irish: Cill Chaoil, meaning "narrow church/church of the narrow") is a small town in County Down, Northern Ireland. Kilkeel sits on a plain south of the Mourne Mountains. It stretches along the southern coast of County Down, from Carlingford Lough in the west to Annalong in the east. The town is at the foot of a river that flows southwards from the Mournes. Four miles southwest of Kilkeel is Cranfield Point, a small peninsula that marks the southernmost point of the county.

Killadeas

Killadeas (from Irish: Cill Chéile Dé meaning "church of the Culdees") is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is about 7 miles north of Enniskillen near the shores of Lower Lough Erne. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 90 people.
In the cemetery of the Parish "Priory" Church of Killadeas are several stones, the most noted of which is known as the Bishops Stone, a carved figure. To the west of this stone is a large slab, one side of which has at least ten cup-shaped hollows, which is possibly a multiple bullaun stone. Near to this is a hole stone and a pillar.
Near Killadeas, on Lower Lough Erne, is Gublusk Bay, a Royal Air Force base for Short Sunderland and PBY Catalina flying boats during World War II. Building at RAF Killadeas started in January 1941 and the first Catalinas arrived two months later. The site is now the home of the Lough Erne Yacht Club.
The Manor House (Hotel), a converted and extended 19th century country manor, is also in Killadeas. The Killadeas Estate was acquired by Captain J. Irvine in 1660, and the Manor House, formerly known as "Rockfield" (rebuilt 1860) remained part of the Irvine Estate until 1957, when it was purchased for use as a hotel. The Manor House, which has seen many alterations to its design over the centuries, was for a brief period used as an Officer's Mess and Headquarters for the American Forces during World War II.

Killydrum
Killydrum (from Irish: Coilla Droim meaning "wood of the ridge") is a townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is in the land division of Old Barr in the area of Boho.
The area is known for its holy well named after St Faber's, which has an associated bullán. There are also associations with the home or castle of a chieftan called O'Fialain.

There are several geological features in this area associated with the local bedrock which is composed of limestone. These features are described as Karst because of the way they react with the local water to produce crevices and holes in the rock. One of the most notable features in this area, is known as Killydrum Sink. A Sink, is a descriptive term to describe the entrance to a cave feature. Typically this is caused by the collapse of an older cave chamber so that the ground looks as if it has sunk. This type of hole can also be described as a swallow hole from its appearance. The particular type of rock from which the cave feature is composed bears local prefixes such as Dartry Limestone and Knockmore Limestone. The area around this feature has been is designated a provisional site of special scientific interest (PASSI) by the Department of the Environment (NI). The route of the main water course which passes through Killydrum Sink is believed to drain through the Noon's–Arch system.

Kilnamadoo

The Coal Bog road travels through this townland and the adjacent townland of Drumacoorin. This is a traditional peat cutting area and in past times was the main highway between Lough MacNean and Lough Erne. The area is particularly notable for the remnants of a Neolithic settlement found in the coal bog. An impressive bronze spearhead was also found in this area and is now on display in the National Museum of Ireland.
On 25 May 1880, a local person known as Mr Bothwell was cutting his turf when he unearthed the ancient site. He immediately sent for the archæologist Thomas Plunkett, who identified the remains as being a Neolithic settlement, situated on what was once an island or crannog in the midst of a body of water.
The dimensions of the crannog were 60 yards (55 m) long and 14 yards (13 m) wide. The settlement contained two oak wood huts, the larger measuring 11 feet 10 inches (3.61 m) square, and lay buried at least 21 feet (6.4 m), below the original surface of the bog. The huts themselves were dated at this time to approximately 4000 years old. The modern whereabouts of this settlement are now unknown, but artefacts from the site are retained in the National Museum of Ireland, including the handle of a stone axe.

Kinawley is also the name of the parish in which the village lies. Historically its name has been spelled as Kilnawly and Killnally, amongst others.
St Naile's Church in the Parish of Kinawley, in the Diocese of Kilmore, was built between the years 1867–1876 near a site that was used for worship from the 6th century. It was rededicated on 4 August 2002.
The church is dedicated to Saint Náile (alias Saint Natalis), a contemporary of Saint Colmcille. St Naile became the second Abbott on Devinish, which was one of the great monastic settlements during the Golden Age of Christianity in Ireland.

Knockmore
Knockmore (from Irish: Cnoc Mór meaning "big hill") is an upland area and townland situated in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is situated outside the village of Derrygonnelly, in the historical barony of Magheraboy. This area, together with most of the adjacent Boho parish is described as the Knockmore Scarplands. The focal point of the area is Knockmore summit at 277 metres (909 ft).
The area is considered to be important in environmental terms because it contains several areas of special scientific interest (ASSI), namely the West Fermanagh Scarplands ASSI and West Fermanagh Scarplands Special Area of Conservation (SAC). It also contains a number of sites of archaeological significance, which have been investigated since the late 19th century.
The Knockmore area is known for its dramatic cliffs and rugged terrain. The native rock has the honour of being named Knockmore Limestone; a number of caves and cave systems have developed within this band of rock.
The flora and fauna in this area are largely as a result of the underlying limestone and sandstone geology, consisting of upland heath mixed with calcareous grassland. The area is especially noted for the appearance of Irish eyebright (Euphrasia salisburgensis), which is considered a priority species in Northern Ireland.

Larne (from Irish: Latharna, the name of a Gaelic territory) is a substantial seaport and industrial market town on the east coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland with a population of 18,228 people in the 2001 Census. As of 2011, there are about 31,000 residents in the greater Larne area. It has been used as a seaport for over 1,000 years, and is today a major passenger and freight roll-on roll-off port. Larne is twinned with Clover, South Carolina.
Larne is administered by Larne Borough Council. Together with the neighbouring district of Carrickfergus and part of Newtownabbey, it forms the East Antrim constituency for elections to the Westminster Parliament and Northern Ireland Assembly.
The coastal area around Larne has been inhabited for millennia, and it thought to have been one of the earliest inhabited areas of Ireland, with these early human populations believed to have arrived from Scotland via the North Channel. The early coastal dwellers are thought to have had a sophisticated culture which involved trading between the shores of the North Channel and between other settlements on the coasts of Scotland. Archaeological digs in the area have found flintwork and other artefacts which have been assigned dates from 6000 BC onwards. The term Larnian has even been coined by archaeologists to describe such flintworks and similar artefacts of the Mesolithic era (and one time to describe Mesolithic culture in Ireland as a whole).

During the past 50 years the town has experienced sustained growth, related to significant development of modern industry and its perception as an attractive residential town. Limavady is a prosperous service centre for the Roe valley, but as a retail centre it is subject to increasing competition from Derry, Coleraine and to a lesser extent Ballymena. One of the distinctive features of the town’s growth has been the predominant southward and eastward expansion of its suburbs, with the River Roe flood plain continuing to contain the town to the west and north. From mid 1988 to mid 2004, a total of 1,332 dwellings were built in the town, mainly at Bovally along the south eastern edge of the town. The large industrial estate at Aghanloo is 3 km north of the town.

The Roman Catholic church building and a Plymouth Brethren gospel hall lie just off the main street. Just outside the village is Carrybridge, a marina on Upper Lough Erne.
Lisbellaw has two primary schools: Lisbellaw Primary School (which has about 311 pupils) and Tattygare Primary School (the Roman Catholic school, with an enrollment of around 50).^{[citation needed]}

Lisnaskea (from Irish: Lios na Scéithe, meaning "ringfort of the shield") is the second-biggest settlement in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It had a population of 2,739 people in the 2001 Census. The town is built around the long main street, which bends at almost 90 degrees along its course.
Lisnaskea was once the seat of the Maguire Clan. This strategic importance led to the town changing hands many times over the years. Sir Michael Balfour took control of the town during the Plantation of Ulster. In 1618, he oversaw the building of Castle Balfour, just off the village's main street. The castle was inhabited until the early 19th century and is now undergoing restoration. In 1821 the village came under the control of the Earls of Erne. They established the market in the town whilst bolstering and controlling development around the high street.
Throughout the history of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Fermanagh, Lisnaskea has consistently been a major force in Gaelic football, ladies football and hurling. The local GAA team is known as Lisnaskea Emmetts and have won a range of honours in the sport including the All Ireland intermediate championship in 2011.^{[citation needed]} and the All Ireland ladies final in 2011Template:20th February They wear red and green. Lisnaskea Emmetts over the years have had clubmen involved in the Fermanagh GAA and Ulster Railway Cup team.

Lurgan

The town is near the southern shore of Lough Neagh and in the north-eastern corner of the county. Part of the Craigavon Borough Council area, Lurgan is about 18 miles (29 km) south-west of Belfast and is linked to the city by both the M1 motorway and the Dublin–Belfast railway line. Lurgan is characteristic of many Plantation of Ulster settlements, with its straight, wide planned streets and rows of cottages. It is the site of a number of historic listed buildings including Brownlow House and the former town hall.
Historically the town was known as a major centre for the production of textiles (mainly linen) after the industrial revolution and it continued to be a major producer of textiles until that industry steadily declined in the 1990s and 2000s. The development of the 'new city' of Craigavon had a major impact on Lurgan in the 1960s when much industry was attracted to the area. The expansion of Craigavon's Rushmere Retail Park in the 2000s has affected the town's retail trade further.

Lustymore Island
Lustymore Island (from Irish: Loiste Mór meaning "big lodge") is an island located in Lower Lough Erne, in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
Nearby Boa Island, in its Caldragh cemetery has a carved Janus type figure. A second figure was brought to Caldragh in 1939 from Lustymore Island.
In the early 20th century, Lady Hunt from Alberta in Canada owned Lustymore Island and Lustybeg Island. When her residence, Glenvar House, on Lustymore was accidentally burned down, Lady Hunt moved to Germany.

Macken
Macken or Mackan (from Irish: Meacan) is a small hamlet and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, off the A509 main Enniskillen to Derrylin road. Once quite a sizeable village it has now dwindled to containing only a few scattered farmsteads.
Macken was the scene of a famous skirmish on the evening of 13 July 1829 between Catholics and Protestants during which four Protestants were murdered. Nineteen Catholics were later charged for their part in the affair. One of them, Ignatius McManus, was hanged and most of the remainder were transported to Botany Bay, Australia.

It is the biggest town in the south of County Londonderry and is the social, economic and political hub of the area. Magherafelt District Council is headquartered in the town.
Magherafelt is a Plantation town built around a central diamond, which forms the heart of the town. However, the origins of the town predate the Plantation and go back to 1425. During The Troubles in the late 20th century, 11 people were killed in or near Magherafelt in connection with the conflict.
Magherafelt railway station opened on 10 November 1856, shut for passenger traffic on 28 August 1950 and shut altogether on 1 October 1959.
Magherafelt has several sporting teams, consisting of O'Donovan Rossa Magherafelt GAC, the Rainey Old Boys Rugby Club, Magherafelt Sky Blues F.C. and Magherafelt Reds.

Magheraveely
Magheraveely (from Irish: Machaire Mhílic) is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of people 254. It is within the Fermanagh District Council area.
Charles Irwin (1824–1873) was born in Manorhamilton, County Leitrim and was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross. He is buried in Saint Mark's Churchyard, Magheraveely.
Gortra House is situated midway between Magheraveely and Newtownbutler. The Crozier family formerly lived at Cloncarn and Springtown, County Fermanagh. In the graveyard on the edge of the village is the Burial Vault of the Crozier family of Gortra House. It was built by John Crozier of Gortra House (born 1765 died 1814) and contains the remains of that family until 1933.

Manorhamilton
Manorhamilton (Irish: Cluainín (Uí Ruairc) ) is a small town in north County Leitrim, Ireland. It is located on the N16 between Sligo (27 km) and Enniskillen (41 km).
Before the Plantations of Ireland the settlement was known as Clooneen (from Irish: Cluainín Uí Ruairc, meaning "Uí Ruairc's small meadow"). This lay on the west bank of the Owenbeg. Uí Ruairc (Anglicised as O'Rourke) was the local Gaelic chieftain based in nearby Dromahair whose land was seized by the English and then granted to Sir Frederick Hamilton for his services in the European wars of the 17th century. As a result of his actions Hamilton to this day is considered to have been a tyrant by the local people. He began building a new town on the east bank of the river, in the townland of Clonmullen, which he renamed Manorhamilton. After the town emerged, the name Baile Hamaltuin was adopted by Irish speakers and its anglicised form Ballyhamilton was used by English speakers for a time.
In 1996 a group committed to sustainable living and agriculture came together to form The Organic Centre in nearby Rossinver. This innovative centre is a key location in the development of organic food production in Ireland. As well as producing organic food and assisting local growers it offers a broad spectrum of courses in the areas of organic growing and sustainable farming. The centre also publishes information leaflets on organic farming and gardening.

Marble Arch Caves
The Marble Arch Caves are a series of natural limestone caves located near the village of Florencecourt in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. They are formed by water draining off the northern slopes of Cuilcagh mountain.
The caves were first explored by Édouard-Alfred Martel and Dublin naturalist Lyster Jameson in 1895, starting at the Cladagh Glen resurgence, already a popular tourist attraction. Using a canvas boat, and with candles and magnesium flares for light, Martel and Jameson found 1,000 feet (305 m) of passages, including the junction where the Owenbrean and the combined Aghinrawn and Sruh Croppa waters meet. In 1908 and later in 1935, groups of English cavers from Yorkshire Ramblers' Club explored further and discovered more chambers, the latter group reaching the limit of today's show cave. In the late 1960s a major breakthrough was made when a bypass to sump 1 was found by Dave Cobley and Mike Boon, giving access to the Legnabrocky Way and Skreen Hill 2 and Skreen Hill 3 sections of the cave. A notable feature of the Legnabrocky Way is the Giant's Hall, a large chamber 60 m long, 30 m high and 15 m wide.

Monea

Monea (from Irish: Maigh Niadh, meaning "plain of warriors") is a small village and townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, about 10 kilometres (6 mi) northwest of Enniskillen. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 114.
Monea Castle was built about 1618 by Malcolm Hamilton and had a bawn built later, in 1622. It was captured in the Irish Rebellion of 1641 by Rory Maguire but refurbished and used again by the Scottish and English planters. In 1688 it was the home of the Governor of Enniskillen. It remained in use until gutted by fire in the middle of the 18th century.

Moylehid
Moylehid (from Irish: Mulleithid/Maol Leathan meaning "broad bare hill") is a townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is in the civil parish of Boho.
Moylehid provides archeological proof of neolithic settlement in the BohoBoho, County Fermanagh area in the form of the Eagle’s Knoll Cairn passage tomb and Moylehid ring cairn. Both of these are scheduled monuments and were uncovered by the archeologist Thomas Plunkett in 1894.
In carn is situated on an eastern spur of Belmore Mountain overlooking the Erne valley, and resembles some natural bosses of cherty limestone, which are overgrown with peat.
The cairn or passage grave is laid out in a cross shaped arrangement, 13 ft long and 7 ft 4 inches wide. The whole assembly is divided by means of partitions into 7 areas.
There were a number of artifacts discovered in these chambers including cremated and uncremated bones, ornamented stone beads,human skulls, animals bones such as birds boars and sea shells, a stone hammer and ornamented urns (which are on display in the National Museum of Ireland which is in Dublin)

It is 34 miles (55 km) from Belfast and 67 miles (108 km) from Dublin. Newry (together with Bessbrook) had a population of 27,433 at the 2001 Census, while Newry and Mourne Council Area had a population of 87,058. Newry was founded in 1144 alongside a Cistercian monastery and is one of Northern Ireland's oldest towns.
The city of Newry is one of the constituent cities of the Dublin-Belfast corridor and sits at the entry to the "Gap of the North", close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. It grew as a market town and a garrison and became a port in 1742 when it was linked to Lough Neagh by the first summit-level canal in Britain or Ireland. In March 2002, as part of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee celebrations, Newry was granted city status alongside Lisburn. Despite being the fourth largest city in Northern Ireland, however, it is not the fourth largest settlement. Newry has long been an important centre of trade because of its position between Belfast and Dublin.

Newtownabbey is a large town north of Belfast in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Newtownards is a large town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough, 10 miles (16 km) east of Belfast, on the Ards Peninsula. Newtownards is the largest town in the Borough of Ards. According to the 2001 Census, it has a population of 27,821 people in 11,502 households, placing it in the "large town" class. Approximately 86 percent of the population is from a Protestant and nine percent from a Catholic background. It is known colloquially by locals as "Ards".
In 545 AD, St. Finian founded a monastery near to present-day Newtownards. He named it "Movilla" (Magh Bhile, "the plain of the sacred tree," in Irish), which suggests that the land had previously been a sacred pagan site. The monastery was destroyed by the Vikings sometime after AD 824. In the 12th century, it joined together with Bangor Abbey as an Augustinian monastery. Later, the monastery was raided by Hugh O'Neill^{[disambiguation needed ]} from mid-Ulster, after which the urban settlement at Movilla disappeared and the area around it became known as "Ballylisnevin" ("the town land of the fort of the family of Nevin"). The Normans, who arrived in Ireland after 1169, founded a town in the same place around 1226, named it "Nove Ville de Blathewyc" ("New Town of Blathewyc"; the name of an earlier Irish territory), and established a Dominican priory. The town declined, however, and by the 15th century the land was controlled by the O'Neill clan, with the town virtually abandoned.

Newtownbutler

Newtownbutler or Newtown Butler is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is in the southeast corner of the County, close to the border with County Monaghan and the town of Clones. It is surrounded by small lakes and bogland and close to Lough Erne. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 943 people.
Newtownbutler began to be built as a Plantation village in the early 18th century. It was built within the townland of Aghagay. Originally known as Newtown, it was renamed Newtownbutler when Theophilus Butler was created Baron of the area in 1715.
The local terrain was the undoing of some of the Jacobite forces in 1689 in the Battle of Newtownbutler. A Williamite force of less than 1000 Enniskillen troops captured and killed 3000 of James II’s troops here after they had got lost in the anonymous and unmarked bog.^{[citation needed]}
There were thirteen fatalities in and around Newtownbutler during The Troubles.

Omagh also contains the headquarters of Omagh District Council and the Western Education and Library Board. The town is twinned with East Kilbride (Scotland) and L'Haÿ-les-Roses (France).
The name Omagh is an anglicisation of the Irish name an Óghmaigh (modern Irish an Ómaigh), meaning "the virgin plain". A Franciscan friary was built on the site of the town in about 792 AD. Omagh was founded as a town in 1610. It served as a refuge for fugitives from the east of Tyrone during the 1641 Rebellion. In 1689, the same year as the Battle of the Boyne, James II arrived at Omagh, en route to Derry. Supporters of William III, Prince of Orange, burned the town.

Pettigo
Pettigo (also spelt Pettigoe; Irish: Paiteagó) is a small village on the border of County Donegal, Republic of Ireland and County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is bisected by the Termon River which is part of the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The portion of the village in Northern Ireland is officially called Tullyhommon, but is locally known as 'High Street' due to its hillside position overlooking the remainder of the village. The rest of the village in the Republic includes Main Street, Mill Street and Station Street, all of which meet in The Diamond at the centre of the village. There are also two relatively modern housing estates on the northern outskirts, namely Termon Villas and St. Patrick's Terrace along with new developments such as Mill Grove.
Once a thriving market village on the Enniskillen and Bundoran Railway, the village suffered from partition in 1922, the closure of the railway in 1957 and from the closure of numerous cross-border roads by the British army at the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The latter had the effect of cutting Pettigo off from much of its rural hinterland in counties Fermanagh and Tyrone. In recent years economic prospects have improved with the reopening of many of the cross-border roads, improving access for tourists and locals alike.^{[citation needed]}

Portadown

Portadown (from Irish: Port a' Dúnáin meaning "port of the small stronghold") is a town in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The town sits on the River Bann in the north of the county, about 23 miles (37 km) south-west of Belfast. It is in the Craigavon Borough Council area and had a population of about 22,000 at the 2001 Census.
Although Portadown can trace its origins to the early 17th century, it was not until the Victorian era and the arrival of the railway that it became a major town. Portadown is known as "the hub of the North", due to it being a major railway junction in the past; where the Great Northern Railway's line diverged for Belfast, Dublin, Armagh and Derry.
In the 1990s, Portadown was drawn to the attention of the world's media by the "Drumcree standoff". This is the latest part of a long-running dispute over parading that began in the 19th century and has led to numerous riots and deaths.
Little is known of the area now called Portadown before 1610 except that the area was sparsely populated by Irish Gaels. The dominant local clann was the Mac Cana (McCanns), known as the "Masters of Clann-Breasil" (Clanbrasil), who had been in the area since the 13th century. The Mac Cana were a sept of the Uí Néill (Ó Neills). The stronghold referred to in the Irish name Port an Dúnáin was likely the stronghold of the Mac Cana.

Portora Royal School located in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, is one of a number of 'free schools' founded by Royal Charter in 1608, by James I.^{[citation needed]} Originally called Enniskillen Royal School, the school was established some ten years after the Royal Decree, in 1618, 15 miles outside Enniskillen at Ballybalfour, before moving to Enniskillen in 1661. It was not until 1778 that the school moved to its present location on Portora Hill, Enniskillen, when the nucleus of the present school was built.^{[citation needed]}
Formerly a boarding school, Portora now caters for 490 day students. Originally the school only accepted male pupils, but in the 20th century females were first admitted to Portora; the school's website states, "the year 1979 saw a break from the tradition of the previous 361 years when a small number of girls were accepted as pupils. The number of girl pupils increased from the original 9 boarders and 2 daygirls of 1979 to a maximum of 31 girls in 1984. As of September 2011, girls can enroll into 6th form."^{[citation needed]}

Portrush (from Irish: Port Rois, meaning "promontory port") is a small seaside resort town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, on the County Londonderry border. The main part of the old town, including the railway station as well as most hotels, restaurants and bars, is built on a mile–long peninsula, Ramore Head, pointing north-northwest. It had a population of 6,372 people in the 2001 Census. In the off-season, Portrush is a dormitory town for the nearby campus of the University of Ulster at Coleraine. It neighbours the resort of Portstewart.
The town is well known for its three sandy beaches, the West Strand, East Strand and White Rocks, as well as the Royal Portrush Golf Club, the only golf club outside of mainland Great Britain which has hosted the Open Championship.
It was the base for the Katie Hannan (this life boat was damaged in 2008, after running aground during a rescue at Rathlin Island, Now based as a training boat for the RNLI), a Severn class lifeboat and Ken and Mary, a D–class inshore lifeboat of the RNLI. Lifeboats have operated out of Portrush Harbour since 1860.

Portstewart

Portstewart is a small town in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It had a population of 7,803 people in the 2001 Census. It is a seaside resort neighbouring Portrush. Of the two towns, Portstewart is decidedly quieter with more sedate attractions. Its harbour and scenic coastal paths form an Atlantic promenade leading to 2 miles of golden strand (Portstewart Strand). Portstewart is probably best known for this sandy beach, popular with surfers.
Portstewart was a popular holiday destination for Victorian middle-class families. Its long, crescent-shaped seafront promenade is sheltered by rocky headlands. It is a reasonably prosperous town. Most of the town is contained in the Strand electoral ward and this is one of the most affluent areas in Northern Ireland. In a deprivation index of electoral wards in Northern Ireland the Strand Ward in the town was ranked 570th out of the 582 wards.
House prices in Portstewart have been amongst the highest in Northern Ireland. According to the University of Ulster Quarterly House Price Index report produced in partnership with Bank of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive in Q4 2010, the North Coast region (Coleraine/Limavady area) had higher property prices than those of affluent south Belfast.

Randalstown

Randalstown is a small town in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, located between the towns of Antrim and Toome. It had a population of 4,956 people in the 2001 Census. It has a very prominent disused railway viaduct and lies beside Lough Neagh and the Shane's Castle estate. The town is bypassed by the M22 motorway with junctions at both the eastern and western ends of the town.
The settlement sprang up within the townland of an Dún Mór (meaning "the great fort"), anglicised as Dunmore. Randalstown was named after the 2nd Earl and 1st Marquess of Antrim, Randal MacDonnell (1609–1683), and has strong links to the O'Neill family. The original stronghold of Edenduffcarrick was built in the 16th century and changed ownership repeatedly until it was renamed Shane's Castle after the new owner, Shane Mc Brian O'Neill. The O'Neill family still reside on the estate.
Dunmore Park was used as a training camp for the Ulster Volunteers during the Irish Home Rule crisis.

Reyfad

Reyfad (from Irish: Rath Fada meaning "long fort") is a townland in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It lies in the land division of Old Barr, in the civil parish of Boho This mountainous townland is well known for its extensive cave system (see Caves of the Tullybrack and Belmore hills) and Neolithic stones.
The summit of the nearby hill is known as Tullybrack or Reyfad Mountain (398 metres (1,306 ft)) but it is in fact situated in the townland of Aghamore, County Fermanagh, also within the Boho area.
Nearby to Tullybrack summit lies Two Dogs (derived from the Irish: Sliabh Dá Chon meaning "the hill of the two hounds"), which was the site of an ancient clan battle, as recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters:
A great number of the men of Breifny were disabled and slain by Muinter-Feodachain, on the hill of Odhra, in Sliabh-da-Chon. They lost no less than forty men, together with Conor, the son of Donnell Mac Sweeny, who had gone on that incursion through folly and youth. Some of the men of Dartry, and others of the people of the Clann-Hugh Maguire, were slain there.

Rosslea

Rosslea or Roslea (from Irish: Ros Liath, meaning "grey wood") is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, near the border with County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland. It stands on the River Finn and is beset by small natural lakes. Roslea Forest is nearby. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 554 people.
Former US President Bill Clinton has claimed that his distant forebears came from Roslea, though these claims have been dismissed by the Directory of Irish Genealogy as "baseless".
On 22 March 1921, during the Irish War of Independence, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) launched attacks on the homes of Ulster Special Constabulary (USC) officers in the Rosslea area. Three USC officers were killed. When news of these killings reached Belfast, gunfire broke out in the York Street area and a Catholic civilian was killed.

Siege of Derry

The Siege of Derry (Irish: Léigear Dhoire) lasted from 18 April to 28 July 1689, during the Williamite War in Ireland. The city, a Williamite stronghold, was besieged by a Jacobite army until it was relieved by Royal Navy ships. The siege is commemorated yearly in August by the Apprentice Boys of Derry.
In the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688, James II (King of England, Ireland and Scotland), a Roman Catholic convert, was ousted from power by his Protestant daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange. Most of the Irish population were Catholic, and James had given them some real concessions during his reign. He had made an Irish Catholic the Lord Deputy of Ireland (Richard Talbot), and re-admitted Catholics into the Irish Parliament, public office, and the army. Irish Catholics also hoped that James would re-grant them their lands, which had been seized after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland (1649–53). James thus looked to Ireland to muster support in re-gaining his kingdoms.

Sliabh Beagh
Coordinates: 54°19′08″N 7°15′11″W / 54.319°N 7.253°W Slieve Beagh or Sliabh Beagh (Irish: Sliabh Beatha) is a mountainous area straddling the border between County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland and County Fermanagh and County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. The point where the three counties meet, which is also in the Sliabh Beagh, is referred to as "Three County Hollow".
Sliabh Beagh is mainly blanket bog, with many lakes throughout. In Northern Ireland, much of Sliabh Beagh has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation.
The original Irish name for the area, Sliabh Beatha, has been anglicized as Slieve Beagh or half-anglicized Sliabh Beagh. Sliabh means "mountain" and beatha means "life, sustenance, subsistence". It is sometimes wrongly thought that the second part of the name is the Irish beag, meaning "little". In County Monaghan, the locals typically refer to the Sliabh Beagh as the "Bragan Mountains", taking the name from a townland within the Sliabh Beagh.

Slieve Rushen
Coordinates: 54°9′6.930″N 7°38′33.511″W / 54.151925°N 7.64264194°W Slieve Rushen is a mountain which straddles the border between County Cavan in the Republic of Ireland and County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. It is also called Slieve Russell or Ligavegra (Also Legavagra, Ligavagra). It has an altitude of 404 metres above sea-level. OS 1/50k Mapsheet: 27A & 26. Grid Ref: H234 226. The mountain is made up of grey limestone with a cap of sandstone and shales and is extensively quarried by local companies. The surface is mostly covered with peat, pine forests and grazing fields. The mountain contains several caves and swallow-holes including Pollnagollum and Tory Hole which are a popular destination for potholers. A recent addition to the mountain is the Slieve Rushen Wind Farm for generating electricity.
The name Slieve Rushen derives from the gaelic "Sliabh Ros-in" which means "The Mountain of the Little Wood". However an alternative explanation of the name is given in a Middle-Irish text c.1400 from The Yellow Book of Lecan entitled The Settling of the Manor of Tara, in which verse 34 states "daughter of Toga of the grey stormy sea, at that time ’twas a woman, she from whom Sliabh Raisen is named.". The earliest surviving mention of the name occurs in the Annals of the Four Masters for the year 1111 A.D. "A predatory excursion was made by Toirdhealbhach Ua Conchobhair and he plundered Tearmann-Dabheog. Another predatory excursion was made by him; and he plundered as far as Beann-Eachlabhra, Sliabh-Ruisen, and Loch-Eirne".

Strabane

Strabane (

/strəˈbæn/ strə-BAN; from Irish: An Srath Bán, meaning "the white strath"), historically spelt Straban, is a town in west County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It contains the headquarters of Strabane District Council.
Strabane has a population of around 20,000 and is the second-largest town in Tyrone, after Omagh. It lies on the east bank of the River Foyle and is roughly equidistant from Omagh, Derry and Letterkenny. The Foyle marks the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. On the other side of the river (across Lifford Bridge) is the smaller town of Lifford, which is the county town of County Donegal. The River Mourne flows through the centre of the town, and meets the River Finn to form the Foyle. Strabane suffered huge economic damage in 1987 when much of the centre of the town was flooded.
Strabane is twinned with Zeulenroda in the state of Thuringia, Germany.
Strabane once had the dubious distinction of the highest unemployment rate in the Industrial World, during the height of The Troubles. It is one of the most economically deprived towns in the United Kingdom.

The Clinton Centre
Coordinates: 54°20′38″N 7°37′59″W / 54.344°N 7.633°W The Clinton Centre is situated on the site of the Remembrance Day bombing on 8 November 1987 in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland when the Provisional Irish Republican Army killed 12 and injured 63 with a time bomb. Former President of the United States of America Bill Clinton gave his name to the facility in dedication to peace and prosperity in Ireland and around the world and has visited the site three times along with his wife, Hillary Clinton.
The Centre houses a fully equipped conference floor, a restaurant, internet cafe, art gallery and The Bridges Youth Hostel.
The building stands on the site of the Reading Rooms owned by St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church which was destroyed in the bombing in 1987. The Centre was conceived as part of the Higher Bridges Project, bridging this site with the former Enniskillen Orange Hall.
Plans were laid in 2000 to construct a new structure to balance the restored Orange Hall, a listed building. This was coordinated by Fermanagh University Partnership Board.

Trory (likely from Irish: Treabhraigh meaning "place of tillage") is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is located just 2 miles to the north-west of Enniskillen. In the 2001 Census it had (with Ballycassidy and Laragh) a population of 315 people. It lies within the Fermanagh District Council area.
The ferry to Devenish Island leaves from Trory point about 1.5 miles out of Enniskillen.

Tullygerravra (from Irish: Tulaigh Dhoire Bhreith meaning "hill of the oak-wood of the birth") is a townland in the area of Belcoo, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It was previously in the area of Boho and still constitutes a part of the parish of Botha.
This townland is mentioned as one of the three townlands including Agho and Eoss in the parish of Botha which were removed from the barony of Magheraboy around the 1890s.

It lies within the Fermanagh District Council area. In the 2001 Census the village had a population of 81 people.
Historically, it is part of the larger village of Pettigo, the remainder of which lies in County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. It is divided by the Termon, the river which forms part of the boundary between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Locally, Tullyhommon is known as "High Street", from its hillside position overlooking the rest of Pettigo.^{[citation needed]}
On Remembrance Day on 8 November 1987, the Provisional IRA planted a bomb on a parade route but it failed to explode. The parade consisted mainly of young members of the Girls' Brigade and Boys' Brigade with only a handful of security forces in attendance. The bomb was estimated to be four times the size of the Enniskillen bomb. This attempted bombing was part of an operation to coincide with the Enniskillen attack which left 12 civilians dead.

Warrenpoint

Warrenpoint (Irish: An Pointe) is a small town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies on the northern shore of Carlingford Lough and is separated from the Republic of Ireland by a narrow strait. The town sprang up within the townland of Ringmackilroy (from Irish: Rinn Mhic Giolla Rua meaning "MacIlroy's point"). It is locally nicknamed "The Point".
Warrenpoint is known for its scenic location, the Maiden of Mourne festival, the Blues on the Bay music festival, the passenger ferry service between Warrenpoint and Omeath and the nearby Narrow Water Castle which dates from the 1660s.
In the 2001 Census it had a population of 7,000.
What is now Warrenpoint long consisted of a small number of basic dwellings inhabited by people reliant on fishing for their survival and sustenance.
The name "Warrenpoint" is now believed to have been taken from the name of a family that lived here around the latter half of the 18th century. Father Bernard Trainor (who had an interest in place names of the area) mentioned that a family called “Waring” lived here and had a house called “Warings Point”. In Irish the place name is Rinn Mhic Ghiolla Rua (McIlroy's Point). The name Ringmackilroy may be seen on some maps. The shortened form is An Phointe. Warrenpoint is often referred to simply as The Point.
