Grip blocking on Dufton Fell, Cumbria 2015
Grip blocking on Dufton Fell #Cumbria . These two 'dancing' diggers are specialised, low ground pressure vehicles that are used to block moorland drains or 'grips'. Diggers are used to build peat dams which are cost effective and extremely successful. Re-wetting blanket bog prevents further erosion of the peat and improves the habitat for invertebrates and moorland birds.

Low Impact Moorland Transport of personnel over very wet blanket bog in North Yorkshire , UK. We use Kawasaki Trans 4 x 4 Mules with Kamo snow and mud tracks and bespoke dual axle passenger trailers with flotation tyers, The result is a smooth comfortable and safe ride with minimum impact on the blanket bog vegetation. Repetitive journeys along the same route can result with some minor damage to the peat surface in very wet patches. To negate any negative impact it would be ideal to use flotation net tracks that would allow the moorland vegetation to grow through whilst providing structural adhesion to the track surface. Such tracks require permissions from Natural England and National Park Authorities. The use of this equipment ideally in conjunction with floating tracks offers a viable alternative to building hard access roads in moorland environments.
