Michalis Tzouganakis@Frankfurt May 2009 - Mantinades
May 2009 Michalis Tzouganakis and his Band gave two outstanding performances in Germany (Frankfurt -Die Fabrik and Berlin-Jazz Club Quasimodo). Here Michalis is singing some captivating Mantinades in his very unique way. Nychta gianta'sai skotini kai mayroforemeni, Mipos agapises ki esy kai vgikes gelasmeni? Mono pos fovo prokaleis lene gia sena nychta, Ma osoi ponoyne poly vathia kseroyne tin alithia! Mi prospathis na mou kriftis nychta katalaveno Oti to mavro chroma sou dichnei sevda chameno!!! Metrisse i nychta t'astra tis kai lipi ena zevgari Chamilosse ta matia sou min erthei kai ta parei. .... Mantinades are very typical Cretan verses sang in a certain melody line. These are 15-syllable rhyming couplets in Cretan dialect. Each mantinada is complete in itself, in spite of its short length. There are however some mantinades used to answer others, in which case their meaning is complementary. Still today thousands of mandinades are made often also improvisized. Most get forgotten, the best are passed from mouth to mouth or written down. The Band: Michalis Tzouganakis (Laute, Outi, Stimme) Giorgos Skordalos (Lyre) Mati Palaiologos (Keyboard) Theodoris Kouelis (Bass) Grigoris Sintridis (Drums) A detailed concert report (in German) can be found here. www.kritimou.de www.michalistzouganakis.com http Fanpage in German Language www.tzouganakis.eu

The Ancient Island of Crete - Knossos
Crete (Greek: Κρήτη, transliteration: Krētē, modern transliteration Kriti) is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea at 8336 km² (3219 square miles). Crete is one of the 13 peripheries of Greece and covers the same area as the Greek region of Crete from before the 1987 administrative reform[1]It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece; while it retains its own local cultural traits (such as its own music and dialect), Cretans identify themselves as Greeks. Heraklion is the largest city and capital of Crete. The first human settlements on the island, dating to the aceramic Neolithic, used cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and dogs as well as domesticated cereals and legumes; ancient Knossos was the site of one of these major Neolithic (then later Minoan) sites.[2] Crete was the centre of Europe's most ancient civilisation; the Minoan. Early Cretan history is replete with legends such as those of King Minos, Theseus, Minotaur, Daedalus and Icarus passed on orally via poets such as Homer. Crete was involved in the Mithridatic Wars, initially repelling an attack by Roman general Marcus Antonius Creticus in 71 BC. Nevertheless, a ferocious three-year campaign soon followed under Quintus Caecilius Metellus, equipped with three legions and Crete was finally conquered by Rome in 69 BC, earning for Metellus the title "Creticus". Gortyn was made capital of the island, and Crete became a Roman province, along ...

Crete May 2009 PART 1
Our trip to Crete in May 2009 Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Crete was the center of the Minoan civilization (ca. 26001400 BC), the oldest Greek civilization. Today Crete is one of the thirteen peripheries of Greece and a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece. While it retains its own local cultural traits (such as its own music and dialect), Cretans identify themselves as Greeks. Crete is the location of significant ancient history, which provides popular modern day tourist destinations. They include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, the Venetian old city and port of Chania, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, and the Samaria Gorge.

Greek Colonization
ROME The Greeks started to colonize a long time ago. It started with Romulus and Remus who were Greek Trojans. Their father and mother fled Troy after the war of Troy. They were then born in Alba Longa. After they were around 30 they found the city of Rome. They then took the Greek alphabet and changed it to Latin. More Greeks came there also after a while. Rome then took the Greek Gods and Latinized them. They also took Hercules. Henceforth if you can trace your family lineage to Rome you are a Greek and your ancestors came from Troy. SICILY The Peloponnese Greeks sailed to Sicily. They colonized most of the land. They then started to speak a dialect of Greek which has little Latin influence (Sicilian). This region was called Magna Graecia (Greater Greece). Henceforth if you can trace your linage to Sicily you are Greek. KINGDOM OF NAPLES The Greeks from Macedonia which was part of Byzantium sailed to the land above Sicily. This whole land was called the Kingdom of Naples in 1494. They colonized this and started to speak Latin, Sicilian, and the closest language to Greek, Griko. Henceforth if you can trace your linage to the Kingdom of Naples you are Greek. CYRENAICA (CYRENE) The Greeks colonized Cyrene. These Greeks were from Crete. Cyrene comes from the Greek word Crete. Look carefully Krit, Kriti, Kyrit, Kyreti, Cyrete, Crete. That was the evolution of Crete. The second last one was Cyrete. The evolution of Cretan is: Krito, Kritas, Kyriton. Kyrene, Cyrene, Cretan ...

Were the Dorians Illyrian?
The song is ΜΑΓΝΗΤΗΣ (Magnet), by Vasilis Karras (ΒΑΣΙΛΗΣ ΚΑΡΡΑΣ). The Dorians (Δωριεῖς) came from Northern Greece and conquered all the kingdoms of Mycenaea. The Dark Age that followed led to the creation of the Tyrant and City-States in 800-700BC until 300BC. Dorians such Spartans, Corinthians and Macedonians were great warriors and rulers. Albanians are busy as usual claiming history that doesn't belong to them. Illyrians never wrote their history, so we don't know much about them, except what Greek and Roman historians wrote about them. still, Albanians will grasp at circumstantial evidence and coincidence to claim that the Dorians are Albanians. 1)They say that Dorians came from Illyria. In fact they come from the northern parts of Thessaly (Pindar, Pythian Odes i. 124, v. 96), what is today the border between Macedonia and Thessaly in Greece. 'The Lacedaemonians were the most eminent of the Dorian peoples and the Athenians of the Ionian. These two (...) were the most powerful of the Greek people (...)The Dorians have been constantly on the move (...)they settled in Pindos, and were known as Macedonians; they they migrated (...)to the Peloponnese, where they got their present name of Dorians' (Herodotus, The Histories, Book I) 'they bordered on the Lapithae, but inhabited the mountain district of Hestiaeotis' (Karl Otfried Müller , The History and Antiquities of the Doric Race, p 32) 'Thus it sung how Aegimius, the Doric Prince, whilst engaged in a difficult and ...

Ιεράπετρα - Ierapetra
I don't own the melody or lyrics on this music video.... GreekFoodTv☼ Greens at an Athens' farmers market
Shopping for greens at a Greek farmer's market. To learn the names of so many healthy wild greens and other nutritious info, press more. Greens in the Aegean Probably no other wild food, save for mushrooms, is as difficult to categorize as greens. Greece has one of the richest floras in the world; there are over 300 varieties of edible wild greens and grasses and to this day most of these are esteemed in island cooking. The problem is making sense out of names because different names often refer to the same plant from place to place. While the following list by no means aims to be complete, it represents a selection of the most popular or distinct local wild greens in the southern Aegean. Alifoni -- This thorny, ancient green goes by dozens of local names, including radiki tis thalassas (sea chicory), centaurio, astoivi, stamnagkatho. It tends to grow near the sea and is popular on many islands, but especially Tinos. It is eaten as a boiled salad. Alivarvara - This is the thistle so esteemed by the ancients and still much appreciated today, especially in Kimolos, where it is generally collected after it rains. Island cooks pickle it and serve it as a meze for ouzo but also stew it with meat. In some islands it is known as ververida or karida (Syros). Askolimbri, as it's called in Mykonos, or Skolimbro, as it's known in Kimolos -- Here is one of the most revered of the Greek wild greens, popular in many Aegean islands, most notably Crete. It is a thorny green that needs ...
