Northern Europe dominates competitiveness survey
www.euronews.com European countries fill five of the top six slots in the latest tally of the world's most competitive economies. Switzerland was top for the fourth year running, followed by Singapore, then Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany. The US slipped from fifth to seventh place while Britain rose from 10th to eighth. The rankings are compiled by the World Economic Forum, which looks at official data and surveys thousands of leading business executives. The survey showed vast differences in Europe with Spain in 36th position, Italy was 42nd, Portugal at 49 and Greece in 96th place out of a total of 144 nations surveyed. There was even worse for Greece as in a separate rating of macroeconomic environment it was dead last in 144th place. The survey's authors at the World Economic Forum said that "low levels of productivity and competitiveness do not warrant the salaries that workers in Southern Europe enjoy". They blame political deadlock for preventing some European countries from taking a longer term approach to improving competitiveness to stabilise future growth. A new democratic revolution is sweeping northern Europe - Nigel Farage
www.ukipmeps.org • European Parliament, Strasbourg - 28 September 2011 •Speaker Nigel Farage MEP, UKIP, Co-President of the EFD Group in the European Parliament (Europe of Freedom and Democracy) • Debate: State of the Union address by the President of the Commission, José Manuel Barroso • Speech Transcript: Mr Barroso, You told us this morning that the European Union is an inspiration. And whilst you admitted to there being one or two little economic problems, you made it perfectly clear that jobs and growth were to follow, that everything is going well - in fact you painted a vision that a new period of European renewal is upon us. Now as a former communist yourself you probably remember the old soviet leaders getting up to give their speeches and telling everybody that there was a record harvest, or that tractor production figures were terribly good. And they of course believed that history was on their side and in fact President Krushchev got up and said to the West 'We will bury you," so much did he believe in his own Union. Well now of course we look back at that and we laugh. And I think in our tomorrows, people will look back at you, and they will say 'how did this unelected man get all of this power?' And how did Europe's political class sitting in this room decide that the community method [federal] should replace national democracy. I think people will look back in astonishment that we've surrendered democracy. But what you want to do is to say, right, we have a ...

VIKINGS, conquers of Northern EUROPE and Vinland (America)
Viking Age is the term denoting the years from about 700 to 1066 in European history. It forms a major part of Scandinavian history. Scandinavian (Norse) Vikings explored Europe by its oceans and rivers through trade and warfare. The Vikings also reached Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, and Anatolia. Additionally, there is evidence to support the Vinland legend, that Vikings reached farther south to the North American continent. As of 2008, L'anse aux Meadows, an archaeological site on the northernmost tip of the island of Newfoundland, Canada remains the only widely accepted site of pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, after Lindisfarne was raided in 793, Vikings continued on small-scale raids across England. Viking raiders struck England in 793 and raided a Christian monastery that held Saint Cuthberts relics. The raiders killed the monks and captured the valuables. This raid was called the beginning of the Viking Age of Invasion, made possible by the Viking longship. There was great violence during the last decade of the 8th century on Englands northern and western shores. While the initial raiding groups were small, it is believed that a great amount of planning was involved. During the winter between 840 and 841, the Norwegians raided during the winter instead of the usual summer. They waited on an island off Ireland. In 865 a large army of Danish Vikings, supposedly led by Ivar, Halfdan and Guthrum, arrived in East Anglia ...

Earth
Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by the crew of expeditions
28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October,
2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km.
All credit goes to them.
HD, refurbished, smoothed, retimed, denoised, deflickered, cut, etc.
All in all I tried to keep the looks of the material as original as possible,
avoided adjusting the colors and the like, since in my opinion the original
footage itself already has an almost surreal and aestethical visual nature.

Airspace Rebooted
A visualisation of the northern European airspace returning to use after being closed due to volcanic ash. Due to varying ash density across Europe, the first flights can be seen in some areas on the 18th and by the 20th everywhere is open.
The flight data is courtesy of http://www.flightradar24.com and covers a large fraction of Europe. There are a few gaps (most noticeably France) and no coverage over the Atlantic, but the picture is still clear.

Andreu Lacondeuy: Riding Cam White's Massive Dirt Jumps
www.unitriders.com
Spanish freeride MTB wild-man Andreu Lacondeguy has returned to his homeland after successfully becoming the first mountain bike rider to dominate Cam White’s huge dirt-jump line in Canberra, Australia.
Lacondeguy, 22, and his brother Lluis, swapped the cold European winter for the balmy Australian summer during a four-week holiday Down Under, and took time out to hit the 2008 Dew Tour champion’s infamous dirt jump line that is widely regarded to be one of the world’s biggest trails.
“The line is just amazing!” Andreu says. “It’s probably the best spot ever, man. You are hitting those 10ft ramps so fast, and they send you very high. It’s just the best fun ever.”
Lacondeguy wasn’t content to just flow through the line, and threw all his biggest tricks over the massive booters, including his trademark Superflip Indies, 360 Nacs and boned-out Seatgrabs.
“Watching Andreu on those jumps was one of the most amazing experiences ever,” says Unit filmer Allan Hardy. “He has such a flamboyant personality, oozes confidence, has incredible style on a bike, and when he crashes he springs back up like a cat. He really is a freak!”

In this timelapse film you will see some of Norway´s most famous nature attractions- from the beautiful fjords, spectacular views from famous panoramic viewpoints like Dalsnibba in Geiranger all the way up to Galdhøpiggen (highest mountain peak in Norway and Northern Europe) just to mention a few of the locations in this film.
If you want more detailed information about the locations and nature attractions in this video, check out NORWAY-TRAVEL GUIDE vimeo.com/32381957 (nature attractions and locations are added in the right corner)
This is my debut timelapse video, and the making of this film has been a real challenge. Living in Oslo (250-500 km away from the scenery portrayed in this film), I had to make 11 trips over a period of 15 months to fullfill this project. I had to visit and revisit locations which were not easily reached considering the the heavy photo gear I was carrying.
When I look back on this project, the most exhausting and dramatic challenge was to climb Galdhøpiggen 2469m/8100ft (5:10-6:08). I had to visit this mountain twice while I was shooting this movie, as my first attempt back in july 2010 was ruined by strong winds. In 2011, a second attempt was made, and this time I got lucky. As I witnessed a beautiful sunset on the roof of Norway and Northern Europe, I knew I was pushing the boundaries and it would be a race against darkness and dropping temperatures to the valley 1400 meters/4600 ft below. My concern was right. At this alltitude, the temperature drops rapidly when the sun sets, and the snow fields in the rather steep terrain just below the summit (which were safe during the daylight) had now turned into treacherous ice. Although I was aware that the temperature had plummeted, I didn´t know that the snow fields had turned into ice so rapidly. As a result of my carelessness and stupidity, I fell uncontrolled down the steep slope and got some deep cuts in my left hand. After all, I had lucky escape- as I stopped before I was severly hit by the rocks in the end of the slope.
As the darkness fell, I ran into another problem. Even with a powerful headlamp, I couldn't find the cairns which would lead me down to the valley. After a while I was way out of track and heading straight into steep terrain, so I had no other option than to abort the descent and spend the night in this high alpine area. Nedless to say, the night was very cold, and I had to endure frostbite for many hours. Finally, after 17 hours in this high alpine area, I returned to safety.
Special thanks to:
Tore Johnsen who spent many hours to create and synchronize his beautiful music into this film and my parents for the support. Also, a HUGH thanks to all the timelapse enthusiasts on forum.timescapes.org/phpBB3 for sharing there valuable knowledge.

Don Williams - Come Early Morning 1972 His biggest hit in northern Europe
Say the name of Don Williams, and most think of hits like "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend" - "It Must Be Love" - "Tulsa Time" - "I'm Just a Country Boy" and many more But in northern Europe one thinks immediately of "Come Early Morning" as one of his greatest success, and funny enough it is not among the big hits. Personally, "Come Early Morning" by Don Williams are on my personal top ten of the best recordings in country music history
