AT&T; Enhanced Push To Talk: A Guided Tour
Back when voice communication was still king, phone calls weren't the only game in town. Some carriers offered a service called "push-to-talk" - a two-way radio, or walkie-talkie-like solution, for when a phone call just wouldn't do. In America, most carriers found little traction with PTT. The iDEN-based carrier Nextel -now part of Sprint Nextel- saw success for a few years offering dispatch service to its customers, at one time numbering around 20 million people. These days, that number has shrunk to below 5 million, but other carriers are still trying to pick the Nextel carcass clean. The most dedicated PTT competitor these days is the nation's second-largest, AT&T.; Recently, AT&T; rebooted its own PTT offering for North America, switching to an app-based service, adding interoperability and other features, and broadening its device selection. Thanks to our friends at the carrier, we've secured some handsets to check it out. Does the new "Enhanced PTT" offer a compelling experience? Should the millions of Sprint subscribers about to be kicked off the old iDEN network consider it a viable alternative? What's the big deal about push-to-talk anyway? For the answers to these questions and more, check out our guided video tour above. Visit us: pocketnow.com Follow us twitter.com Follow Michael: twitter.com

AT&T; Tech Channel - How a Computer Works. Great Tutorial From 1962
See more from the AT&T; Archives at techchannel.att.com The only film so far found in the AT&T; Archives, and posted here, that was NOT made by AT&T; or any of the company's subsidiaries. However, this film was part of the Bell Labs film library, a resource utilized by Labs engineers. This film was made by the US Navy in order to explain the simplest elements of computers and how they worked. Digital Computer Techniques was a film series introduction to the essential elements of computer and how they worked. The series was made by Audio Productions, Inc., a company that made a lot of films for the Bell System as well. Here's what the entire series consisted of at the time: * Digital Computer Techniques: Introduction (the film posted here) This gives a history of what kind of counting devices led to the creation of a computer; from fingers to stones to slide rules. In this film, the word "computer" seems to still be about number crunching. * Digital Computer Techniques: Computer Logic Part I The binary number system, logic as it is applied to computers, what "code" is. * Digital Computer Techniques: Computer Logic Part II, Symbology (also called "Logic Element Circuits") Explains transistors, AND, OR, NOR, INVERTER and FLIP-FLOP gates. Shows how circuits affect binary signals to produce output. * Digital Computer Techniques: Computer Units Explains the 5 parts of a computer—ie input, storage, control, output, and arithmetic, as well as what sequencing, clocking and timing ...

AT&T; 1993-1994 'You Will' Ad Campaign Compilation - All 7 Ads
i could never find a complete compilation of all of these videos, so i put all 7 together and uploaded it for the world. looking back on these ads, i see that they were eerily prophetic. seriously, the only one of these things that i don't do or haven't done are faxing from the beach (although i email, mms, and upload to the web all manner of pics and vids) and use a vioce-activated lock on my apt door. webcams, ez-pay, self-checkout, gps, wifi/wan, atms for tickets and driver licenses, on-demand video/tivo, realtime online multi-user video project collaboration, wristwatch cellphones we have almost everything. the only things we don't actually have are the automated voice-activated software agent (still in the works), "fax from the beach" (fax is dead, now we email, mms, etc. via wan/wifi/3G/4G), and videophone-booths (instead, video cell phones have existed since about 2003 and even in the iPhone, which i frequently use). plus, i like the song they use.unfortunately, the song was made by a studio working for the ad agency who made the ads, so it's unavailable. update, 1.25.2011: well, there's an app for faxing-- from the beach, i suppose... also, i was contacted by at&t; corporate today. they want to use my video for a presentation. i sent them the source vids. they're going to upscale the resolution send me a copy when they're done. hopefully, they'll let me upload it here to replace this one! AT&T; Archives: Robot, by Jim Henson
For more from the AT&T; Archives, visit techchannel.att.com Jim Henson made this film in 1963 for The Bell System. Specifically, it was made for an elite seminar given for business owners, on the then-brand-new topic — Data Communications. The seminar itself involved a lot of films and multimedia presentations, and took place in Chicago. A lengthy description of the planning of the Bell Data Communications Seminar — sans a mention of the Henson involvement — is on the blog of Inpro co-founder Jack Byrne. It later was renamed the Bell Business Communications Seminar. The organizers of the seminar, Inpro, actually set the tone for the film in a three-page memo from one of Inpro's principals, Ted Mills to Henson. Mills outlined the nascent, but growing relationship between man and machine: a relationship not without tension and resentment: "He [the robot] is sure that All Men Basically Want to Play Golf, and not run businesses — if he can do it better." (Mills also later designed the ride for the Bell System at the 1964 World's Fair.) Henson's execution is not only true to Mills' vision, but he also puts his own unique, irreverent spin on the material. The robot narrator used in this film had previously starred in a skit for a food fair in Germany (video is silent), in 1961. It also may be the same robot that appeared on the Mike Douglas Show in 1966. Henson created a different — but similar — robot for the SKF Industries pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair. This film was found ...

AT&T; Archives: The UNIX Operating System
Watch new AT&T; Archive films every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at techchannel.att.com In the late 1960s, Bell Laboratories computer scientists Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson started work on a project that was inspired by an operating system called Multics, a joint project of MIT, GE, and Bell Labs. The host and narrator of this film, Victor Vyssotsky, also had worked on the Multics project. Ritchie and Thompson, recognizing some of the problems with the Multics OS, set out to create a more useful, flexible, and portable system for programmers to work with. What's fascinating about the growth of UNIX is the long amount of time that it was given to develop, almost organically, and based on the needs of the users and programmers. The first installation of the program was done as late as 1972 (on a NY Telephone branch computer). It was in conjunction with the refinement of the C programming language, principally designed by Dennis Ritchie. Because the Bell System had limitations placed by the government that prevented them from selling software, UNIX was made available under license to universities and the government. This helped further its development, as well as making it a more "open" system. This film "The UNIX System: Making Computers More Productive", is one of two that Bell Labs made in 1982 about UNIX's significance, impact and usability. Even 10 years after its first installation, it's still an introduction to the system. The other film, "The UNIX System: Making ...

AT&T; Archives: Telstar!
To see more from the AT&T; Archives, visit techhchannel.att.com The story of how the Bell System, in cooperation with NASA, developed the Telstar satellite, and participated in the launch and the subsequent successful transmission of signals to and from the earth and space. The film is from 1962. Early scenes show the clearing of a site in Andover, Maine and the construction of Telstar there. Following this, the telephone scientists and engineers do research and test work on Telstar. The teamwork of business, industry and government is then shown at Cape Canaveral, where we see the final tests of the satellite, the seating of the rocket on the launch pad, mounting of the satellite on the final stage of the rocket and the launching of the satellite. The film closes with scenes from Washington DC and Andover, including the first telephone call and faxed photo via satellite, and initial TV transmissions, including a live transmission of Yves Montand from France, greetings from the British, and a speech by JFK. By the end of June 1962, viewers in 16 countries could watch US TV programs. Telstar 1, the satellite profiled here, actually was quite tiny. It was only 34 inches across, and weighed 171 pounds. Its solar panels produced under 15 watts. Conversely, modern satellites average around 47 ft. wide and produce 1.5 kilowatts with their solar panels. Telstar 1 had some problems in the next year after launch. Because the US had conducted a nuclear test in space the day before ...

AT&T; Archives: Saul Bass Pitch Video for Bell System Logo Redesign
For more from the AT&T; Archives, visit techchannel.att.com Bass' work in logo design and movie title credit sequences spanned the latter half of the 20th century, with prominent work in each field. He worked closely with AT&T;, designing not only the 1970 "bell" logo that was ubiquitous for a decade, but also, upon the divestiture of AT&T;, he designed the original "death star" logo, unveiled in 1984. One reason for this bell logo's ubiquity? That redesign was the largest corporate re-identity program in the US, ever. The redesign covered: * 135000 Bell system vehicles * 22000 buildings * 1250000 phone booths * 170000000 telephone directories This film was made by his company as a presentation to AT&T; executives. It would have extended to be shown to the public, but a number of his ideas in the film were not ultimately adopted, like his phone booth designs, and men's and women's uniforms. But a great many were—including, most memorably, the telephone vans and hardhat designs of the 1970s. He designed down to the details, showcasing in this film a myriad of ideas, right down to the yellow pages book designs, cufflinks for executives, and flags. Bass' other very recognizable logo designs that persist today include those for Minolta, Girl Scouts of America, Avery International, Geffen Records, Warner Int'l, and many more. Bass' design for AT&T; was the foundation for the logo that the company has today, redesigned in 2005 by Interbrand. Produced by Saul Bass Footage courtesy of ...

LG Optimus G Review (AT&T;)
For the past few years, most new-product announcements from South Korea's LG have been greeted in America with a heaping helping of "who cares?" The company has spent so long in the shadow of its more-successful rival Samsung that its smartphones, particularly in the United States, have struggled for even moderate mind share. That struggle is also a product of the widely held conception that LG devices just aren't that good, a conception that devices like the LG Intuition have only reinforced. But recently, LG has caught a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel. We had the opportunity to get hands-on time with the Optimus L9 at IFA last month, where we were pleasantly surprised by the unit's responsiveness and software customizability. The company has since shifted its focus -and ours- to its new flagship, the Optimus G. The new device is the first to marry Qualcomm's new quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 4G LTE capability- a standout combination if there ever was one. Announced last month for the international market, the device is slated for arrival at American carriers AT&T; and Sprint in the coming weeks; unlike the more recent Samsung devices for the US, though, these are not uniform products. The Sprint version of the Optimus G adheres more closely to the international unit's specs, whereas the AT&T; model we're reviewing here features some altered dimensions and revised specifications to go along with its blazing radio and chipset. But in a lineup ...

AT&T; Archives: Similiarities of Wave Behavior (Bonus Edition)
For more from the AT&T; Archives, visit techchannel.att.com On an elementary conceptual level, this film reflects the multifaceted scientific hyperthinking that was typical of a Bell Labs approach. Host Dr. JN Shive's presence as a lecturer is excellent - it's understandable by a layperson even when he branches into equations, because he uses copious amounts of real-world examples to bolster the material. Shive's role at Bell Labs was more than just a great lecturer: he worked on early transistor technology, inventing the phototransistor in 1950, and the machine he uses in the film is his invention, now called the Shive Wave Machine in college classrooms. Dr. JN Shive of Bell Labs demonstrates and discusses the following aspects of wave behavior: Reflection of waves from free and clamped ends Superposition Standing waves and resonance Energy loss by impedance mismatching Reduction of energy loss by quarter-wave and tapered-section transformers Original audience: college students Produced at Bell Labs Footage courtesy of AT&T; Archives and History Center, Warren, NJ

LG Optimus G (AT&T;) Unboxing
The Optimus G is the most significant flagship product we've seen from LG in a little while, and another in the company's long line of "firsts." This time, that accomplishment is processor-specific, with this smartphone the first to offer the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro. That means quad-core and LTE on the same device, which has until now been a rarity for much of the developed world. Along with the other hardware specs, like an 8MP camera, "True HD IPS Plus" display, and 2GB of RAM, the Optimus G also features unique glass construction with some interesting visual flairs. That's something we're not necessarily used to seeing from the manufacturer, and it means we're pretty excited to unbox this sucker. So let's get to it. Check out our Optimus G unboxing, and stay tuned for more coverage on this flagship smartphone, including our full review, in the days ahead! The AT&T; Helmet Man (Day One)
I made a special helmet today to poke some fun at AT&T.; Ryan wore it around Nashville this evening and here are the results. I'm actually a satisfied AT&T; customer myself, but when I thought of this idea it was too funny to pass up! The map was made with a sheet of Plexiglas hand-painted with the map from Verizon which I printed out in full size and traced before painting. Ryan was wearing a wireless mic under his jacket (to avoid notice) which accounts for the audio scratching. At the mall, I put the camera into a bag and carried it nearby. We couldn't have the camera too close to the action in the mall because of the wireless receiver which made the camera look just a bit too "pro" to be recording in public places.
