A silent color film of Martha Graham dancing extracts of "Lamentation". Filmed in 1943 at Bennington College by Russian-born sculptor Simon Moselsio. His wife, who took still photos of the same piece, explained ""We used two movie cameras for the motion picture, so we could take the picture from different angles.... I had the still camera around my neck and made the stills at the same time."

"Rite of Spring"; Part 1; (1990); Intro-Beginning
SEGMENT ONE PBS "Great Performances" - presentation (1990 - Japan) Japan Tour 1990 Choreography by Martha Graham Music by Igor Stravinsky Performed by The Martha Graham Dance Company Brief History of the dance: "The Rite of Spring, original French title, Le sacre du printemps (Russian: Весна священная, Vesna svyashchennaya), is a 1913 ballet with music by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, original choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, and original set design and costumes by archaeologist and painter Nicholas Roerich, all under impresario Serge Diaghilev. The music's innovative complex rhythmic structures, timbres, and use of dissonance have made it a seminal 20th century composition. A performance of the work lasts about 33 minutes...." Influence on dance: "The music is used as a standard of dance troupes around the world, including for choreography by Pina Bausch and Sir Kenneth MacMillan. Different from the long and graceful lines of traditional ballet, arms and legs were sharply bent in Nijinsky's choreography. The dancers danced more from their pelvis than their feet, a style that later influenced Martha Graham. The "anti-ballet" aspects of the Nijinsky choreography (body components curled inward not opened outward, body pulled down not lifted up, steps heavy not light, focus on grotesqueness not elegance) as well as the controversial, violent, pagan, or primitivist thematic material, greatly influenced Tatsumi Hijikata and Tamano method Butoh."

Dance Perspectives w/ Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey at Bennington College
www.amazon.com From Martha Hill Davies Private Library Martha Hill (December 1, 1900 -- November 19, 1995) was one of the most influential American dance instructors in history. She was the Director of Dance at the Juilliard School (a position she held for 35 years) and the director of dance at both NYU and Bennington College simultaneously. She founded the Bennington School of Dance, a summer series that proved to have an enormous impact on the history of modern dance, as it became a breeding ground for the creation of masterful new work created by artists like, Doris Humphrey, Martha Graham, Charles Weidman, and Hanya Holm who were hired as faculty and given the time, space, and resources for their creative endeavors.
