Milltown GAA (County Galway)

Milltown (Irish: Baile an Mhuilinn) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the Milltown area in County Galway, Ireland. The club is a member of the Galway GAA. Milltown GAA club is one of the longest established sides in Galway. Milltown are a Gaelic football club.

Twice winners of the Galway County Championship, Milltown made their first appearance in a county final in 26 years when they faced Killererin GAA at Pearse Stadium in 2007, but were defeated by a scoreline of 1-09 to 0-10.

Past legends include Noel Tierney, one of the greatest full backs in Galway football history and a key member of Galways historic "3 In A Row" team.

Other notable players include Gay McManus (captain of Galway in 1982), Sean Brennan, Tony Ryan, Miko Feerick, Joe Waldron, Padraig Coyne and Tomas Tierney (captain of Galway in 1986).

2 Milltown players were part of the Galway Under 21 All-Ireland winning squad in 2002: Diarmaid Blake and John Devane

3 Milltown players were part of the Galway Under 21 All-Ireland winning squad in 2005: Darren Mullahy, Matthew Flannery and Cathal Blake.

Milltown GAA (County Kildare)

Milltown is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Milltown, County Kildare, Ireland which played a leading role in developing the games in the county.

History

Local resident and Home Rule M.P Matt O Shea, Joseph Kelly, and Peter McCormick were the 3 mainstays of the early GAA club in Milltown, McCormick serving as secretary from its foundation on January 8, 1888. RIC records from 1890 show that Milltown Harringtons had 60 members with officers listed as Pat Flood, Peter McCormack, John Tiernan and James Kelly. Nicholas Hannigan attended the 1889 convention.

Milltown were 1892 Senior Football semi-finalists. Local man, Pat “Darkie” Ryan, came on in the second half of the 1928 All Ireland final, which was incidentally the last time Kildare lifted the Sam Maguire. Milltown created one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Kildare Senior Football championship in 1948, when they beat Raheens by 1-4 to 0-6 in their first senior championship match. Christy and John Dowling played on Kildare senior teams at the time.
