NORTHERN SOUL - CHARADES - 'THE KEY TO MY HAPPINESS'
..." style="float: right; margin-right: -5px;">
The MGM CHARADES were formed with a different line-up when the original 1950/60's Doo-wop group, who had planned a comeback, were reluctant to sign a new contract. This prompted the record label to work with a mysterious new act based in New York. However, when soul singer Dean Courtney moved from RCA records to MGM, he mentioned that John T Mac Junior had been running The Charades. The same group may be linked with the Charades that recorded 'You're With Me All The Way'/'Power Of Love' on the Mercury label in 1965 -both sides written by J. Mack. Robert Pruter's 'Chicago Soul' book, explains that only a few Chicago acts in the 60's appeared on Mercury. The producer credited on the label is Tom Wilson -best known for his work in the 1960s with Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Simon and Garfunkel and The Velvet Underground. Arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. The Charades recorded two 45's for MGM Records; 'Key To My Happiness/'Weeping Cup' (66) written by Robert Gerald Maxwell 'I Don't Want To Lose You'/'Never Set Me Free' (66) written by Maxwell flip Rhodes-Casey 'Can't Make It Without You'/'Love Of My Life' also recorded by the Charades (Okeh Records) 1964 -arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. 'You Better Believe It'/'Darling Believe Him' also by the Charades (Harlem Hitparade) Woodbury, New York 1973. Distributed by Pickwick Records, this is a much earlier recording -again, written by Horace Ott. "From the very first bars of the piano and drums this is Northern Soul at its ...

Sami Jo Cole "You're A Part of Me" in HQ Sound
This was the first single from her 1975 MGM LP "Sami Jo." The voice, the song, the arrangement are all first-rate and spelled "BIG HIT." It was not to be, but fortunately these recordings serve as a permanent document of Sami Jo's talent and legacy. This is one of my favorites of Sami's recordings. I hope you enjoy it and the video.

Tommy Dorsey 1943 - Fascinating Rhythm - Girl Crazy - Stereo
The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra plays Sy Oliver's amazing arrangement of George Gershwin's "Fascinating Rhythm" in the 1943 MGM musical "Girl Crazy." Mickey Rooney mimes to Arthur Schutt on piano.
I've replaced the audio on the mono soundtrack with stereo from the CD. Stereo tracks exist since MGM recorded the music using multiple mics before mixing it down to mono for the film soundtrack.
Happily, dedicated audio techs preserved the orchestral angles on 1/4" tape when Louis B. Mayer ordered all original elements destroyed in the early 50s.
Here's the list of musicians at the January 12, 1943 recording session at MGM Studios in Culver City.
TRUMPETS: George Seaberg, Pete Candoli, Ray Linn, Larry Brooks, Ziggy Elman
TROMBONES: Tommy Dorsey, Dave Jacobs, Sol Train, Jimmy Skiles
REEDS: Freddie Stulce (clarinet & alto saxophone), Harry Schuchman (alto & baritone saxophone), Manny Gershman (clarinet & alto saxophone), Heinie Beau (clarinet & tenor saxophone), Don Lodice (tenor saxophone)
RHYTHM: Milt Raskin, Arthur Schutt (piano), Denny Sandole (guitar), Phil Stephens, George Boujie (bass), Moe Purtill (drums)
VIOLINS: Si Miroff, Bernie Tinterow, Lenny Posner (concertmaster), Bill Ehrenkrantz, Alex Beller, Eugene Lamas, Albert Bertchamp, I. Boguslawski, Sam Albert, Sam Fiedler, Cyril Towbin, Jaime Overton, Louis Sarli, Otto Landau, Sarah Kreindler, Mischa Levienne
VIOLAS: Lenny Atkins, Sam Ross, Virginia Majewski, Reuben Marcus, Sam Noble
CELLO: Fred Camelia, Irving Lipschultz, Alex Borisoff

Show Boat - Ava Gardner 's own voice - Can't Help Lovin' That Man
Here's Ava's own vocal track for this great song - she was dubbed by Annette Warren in the released film. Can someone tell me why??
From "Ava: My Story"
"Now, I can sing. I do not expect to be taken for Maria Callas, Ella Fitzgerald, or Lena Home, but I can carry a tune well enough for the likes of Artie Shaw to feel safe offering to put me in front of his orchestra. But since Julie's two songs, "Bill" and "Can't Help Loving That Man," are so beloved by everyone, I decided to work as hard as I could to fit the bill. I even found this marvelous teacher, who'd worked with both Lena and Dorothy Dandridge, and we slaved away for several weeks and produced a test record of those two songs.
Then, rather nervously, I took my life into my hands and gave the record to Arthur Freed himself, God Almighty of musical productions. I don't think the son of a bitch ever even listened to it He just put it on a shelf and delivered the usual studio ultimatum: "Now, listen, Ava, you can't sing and you're among professional singers." So that settled that one.
Or did it? Because the singer they'd chosen to dub my singing had a high, rather tiny voice, totally inappropriate when it was paired with my own speaking voice. The studio spent thousands and thousands of dollars and used the full MGM orchestra trying to get this poor girl right. I mean, there was nothing wrong with her in the first place, except for the obvious fact that she wasn't me.
Finally, they got Annette Warren, this gal who used to do a lot of my singing off-screen, and they substituted her voice for mine. So my Southern twang suddenly stops talking and her soprano starts singing - hell, what a mess.
When it came to the album version of the movie, things got even worse. Being a great fan of Lena's, I had copied her phrasing, note for note, on my test record. So they took my record imitating Lena and put earphones on her so she could sing the songs copying me copying her.
But Metro soon found out that they couldn't legally release the album with my name and image, as they called it, without my voice being part of the package. So then I used earphones to try to record my voice over her voice, which had been recorded over my voice imitating her. I did it note for note, they wiped Lena's voice off the album, and the record was a success. That's the way they worked in those days. And I still get goddamn royalties on the thing!"

Fun with "The Wizard of Oz" - Alternate audio and Deleted scenes
Here are some alternate audio tracks synched up with the film, as well as deleted scenes with stills inserted.
Apparently, the live on-set recording of the "Over The Rainbow" reprise was done under the first director, Richard Thorpe (with Judy wearing a blonde wig, etc.).
Victor Fleming later reshot the song, but that recording has been lost along with the footage. So this may be as close as we'll ever get to seeing how it would have fit into the film.
Just for fun, I've snyched the released film to Ray Bolger's original version of "If I Only Had A Brain" and done the same for Buddy Ebsen's prerecording of "If I Only Had A Heart."
I've slowed down The Lullaby League, so you can hear the actual voices of Lorraine Bridges, Betty Rome, and Carol Tevis.
I've also restored the voices of The Lollipop Guild (Harry Doll, Jerry Maren, and Jackie Gerlich), who were dubbed in the released film by Billy Bletcher, Pinto Colveg and Harry Stanton.
