Dirty Wars: Jeremy Scahill & Rick Rowley's New Film Exposes Hidden Truths of Covert US Warfare 1/2
DemocracyNow.org - Premiering this week at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, the new documentary, "Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield," follows investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill to Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen as he chases down the hidden truths behind America's expanding covert wars. We're joined by Scahill and the film's director, Rick Rowley, an independent journalist with Big Noise Films. "We're looking right now at a reality that President Obama has essentially extended the very policies that many of his supporters once opposed under President Bush," says Scahill, author of the bestseller "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army," and a forthcoming book named after his film. "One of the things that humbles both of us is [when] you arrive at a village in Afghanistan and knock on someone's door, you're the first American they've seen since the Americans that kicked that door in and killed half their family," Rowley says. "We promised them that we would do everything we could to make their stories be heard in the US -- finally, we're able to keep those promises." Goldman Sachs v. Occupy Wall Street: A Greg Palast Investigation
www.democracynow.org - Democracy Now! talks to investigative reporter Greg Palast about a controversy in the banking community around the Occupy Wall Street movement. Palast investigates the story behind Goldman Sachs' recent decision to pull out of a fundraiser for the Lower East Side People's Federal Credit Union in New York City after it learned the event was honoring the protesters at Occupy Wall Street. The investment bank withdrew its name from the fundraiser and also canceled a $5000 pledge. Was the $5000 a Goldman Sachs donation or actually American taxpayer bail-out money Goldman set aside for community banks? "Unintended Consequences of Military Intervention": Roots of Mali, Algeria Crisis Tied To Libya War
DemocracyNow.org - In Algeria, at least 22 foreign hostages remained unaccounted for in what has been described as one of the biggest international hostage crises in decades. Islamist militants opposed to the French air strikes in neighboring Mali seized a gas facility near the Libyan border. It remains unclear how many people died on Thursday when Algerian forces stormed the desert gas complex to free the workers. Meanwhile, the Obama administration has acknowledged it is now directly aiding France's military operation in Mali. We speak to Emira Woods, co-director of Foreign Policy In Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies. Tavis Smiley & Cornel West on Election, Why Calling Obama Progressive Ignores His Record 1/2
Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. As the most expensive presidential election in US history comes to an end, broadcaster Tavis Smiley and professor, activist Dr. Cornel West join us to discuss President Obama's re-election and their hopes for a national political agenda in and outside of the White House during Obama's second term. At a time when one in six Americans is poor, the price tag for combined spending by federal candidates -- along with their parties and outside groups like super PACs -- totaled more than $6 billion. Together, West and Smiley have written the new book, "The Rich and the Rest of Us A Poverty Manifesto." Watch part 2 of this discussion: youtu.be Both Tavis and Smiley single out prominent progressives whom they accuse of overlooking Obama's actual record. "We believe if [Obama] is not pushed, he is going to be a transactional president and not a transformational president," Smiley says. "We believe the time is now for action and no longer accommodation... To be the most progressive means you've taken some serious risk. And I just don't see the example of that." West says that some prominent supporters of Obama "want to turn their back to poor and working people. It's a sad thing to see them as apologists for the Obama administration in that way." "We Steal Secrets": Alex Gibney's New Documentary Explores the Story of WikiLeaks
DemocracyNow.org - Broadcasting from the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, we take a look at the new documentary from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks." The film examines the key players involved in the whistleblowing website's release of hundreds of thousands of secret US diplomatic cables to the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. The founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, features prominently, as does Bradley Manning, the army private accused of leaking the documents to WikiLeaks. Gibney, a documentary filmmaker who won an Academy Award for "Taxi to the Dark Side," joins us in Park City. WikiLeaks Legal Advisor: "We Steal Secrets" Overlooks Key Facets of Julian Assange's Persecution
DemocracyNow.org - Alex Gibney's new documentary, "We Steal Secrets" bills itself as "the Story of WikiLeaks," but our guest Jennifer Robinson -- a legal advisor to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange -- claims it misses key facts. "This is a film about WikiLeaks, about the largest leak in history," Robinson says. "It touches on very important issues about journalism, whistleblowing. But unfortunately, I do not think this film does [those issues] justice ... The film does not recognize threats WikiLeaks faces from potential US prosecution." "No NATO, No War": US Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan Return War Medals at NATO Summit
DemocracyNow.org - Democracy Now! broadcasts from Chicago, site of the largest NATO summit in the organization's six-decade history. On Sunday, veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as members of Afghans For Peace, led a peace march of thousands of people. Iraq Veterans Against the War held a ceremony where nearly 50 veterans discarded their war medals by hurling them down the street in the direction of the NATO summit. We hear the soldiers' voices as they return their medals one by one from the stage. "I am giving back my global war on terror service medal in solidarity with the people of Iraq and Afghanistan," said Jason Heard, a former combat medic who spent 10 years in the US Army. "I am deeply sorry for the destruction that we have caused in these countries and around the globe." Fruitvale: Ryan Coogler's Debut Film on Bay Area Police Slaying of Oscar Grant the Buzz of Sundance
DemocracyNow.org - It was four years ago this month that Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old African American, was shot to death by a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer on New Year's Day in Oakland, Calif. Portraying the last day of his life, the new dramatic film "Fruitvale" has become one of the most talked-about films at this year's Sundance Film Festival. We're joined by the director, 26-year-old, first-time filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who works as a social worker at a juvenile-detention center in San Francisco. Sharif Abdel Kouddous: On Egyptian Revolution's 2nd Anniversary, Protesters' Demands Mostly the Same
DemocracyNow.org - Two years ago, thousands of Egyptians filled Tahrir Square sparking the revolution that brought down dictator Hosni Mubarak. We go to Cairo to speak with Democracy Now! correspondent Sharif Abdel Kouddous, who joins us live from a protest march back to Tahrir. "We hear many of the same chants that we heard two years ago -- bread, freedom and social justice -- and for the downfall of the regime that they see has continued two years after Mubarak's ouster," Kouddous says. "The difference between what is happening now and two years ago is there is a lot less unity and a much more polarized country." "Gideon's Army": Young Public Defenders Brave Staggering Caseloads, Low Pay to Represent the Poor
DemocracyNow.org - The new documentary "Gideon's Army" follows a group of young public defenders in the Deep South who contend with low pay, long hours and staggering caseloads to represent the poor. The film's title comes from the landmark 1963 Supreme Court ruling in Gideon v. Wainwright that established the right to counsel to defendants in criminal cases who are unable to afford their own attorneys. We're joined by "Gideon's Army" director and producer Dawn Porter, and Travis Williams, a Georgia public defender who is featured in the film. After Tiller: 40 Years After Roe v. Wade, Abortion Providers Continue Work of Slain Kansas Doctor
DemocracyNow.org - Forty years after the landmark Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion, the new documentary "After Tiller" follows the only four doctors left in the United States who are known to provide abortions in the third trimester. In 2009 their colleague, Dr. George Tiller, was assassinated while attending church in Wichita, Kansas. The four doctors depicted in the film have also braved threats, harassment and the emotional weight of the stories they hear to provide women with a desperately needed medical procedure. Who Is Dayani Cristal?: Gael Garcia Bernal Traces Path of Migrant Worker Who Died in Arizona Desert
DemocracyNow.org - A new film featuring the Mexican film star Gael Garcia Bernal examines the story of a Honduran migrant who died in the Arizona desert in 2010. "Who is Dayani Cristal?" begins when border police in Arizona discover the decomposing body of a migrant in the Sonoran Desert, in an area known as "the corridor of death." He has no identification, but has one distinguishing feature: A tattoo that reads "Dayani Cristal." The film goes on to untangle the mystery of the migrant's identity, his death and who -- or what -- is Dayani Cristal? We're joined by the film's director, Marc Silver. Oliver Stone on the Untold US History from Atomic Age, Vietnam to Obama's Drone War 1 of 2
Visit www.democracynow.org for the complete transcript, additional reports on this topic, and more information. Watch the independent, global news hour live weekdays 8-9am ET. Academy Award-winning Oliver Stone has teamed up with historian Peter Kuznick to produce a 10-part Showtime series called, "Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States." Drawing on archival findings and recently declassified documents, the filmmakers critically examine US history -- from the atomic bombing of Japan, to the Cold War, to the fall of Communism, and continuing all the way through to the Obama administration. Contrary to what's taught in schools across the country, the filmmakers found the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were militarily unnecessary and morally indefensible. Watch Part 2 of this interview youtu.be Stone and Kuznick also suggest the Soviet Union, not the United States, ultimately defeated the Germans in World War II. And, they assert the United States, not the Soviet Union, bore the lion's share of responsibility for perpetuating the Cold War. The filmmakers also found US presidents, especially in wartime, have frequently trampled on the Constitution and international law, and they note the United States has brought the world dangerously close to nuclear war by repeatedly brandishing nuclear threats. The first episode of the series aired Monday night on Showtime. For more about this series and the companion book, we are joined by Stone and Kuznick ...
