Official "Earth Sheltered Solar Greenhouse" - pit construction
www.permies.com I took a wee bit of video with my crappy camera while visiting Mike Oehler in north idaho. This is the official solar greenhouse per his popular book "The Earth Sheltered Solar Greenhouse Book". The solar greenhouse is drafty, but he gets tomatoes in mid december with no added heat. I think the greenhouse construction looks pretty obvious.

Earth Sheltered Solar House from recycled barn beams
This house was built in 1986 on top of a hill from mostly recycled materials- barn beams & steel & 3 cedar corn silos. There are 25 cubic meters of concrete on the 3 roofs with continuous layer of insulation on exterior of concrete structure & under radiant hollow floors. 3500 sq. ft of floor space. With 8"-18" of earth on the 3 roofs it is warm & cosy in the winter & cool & dry in the summer. I believe it is one of the most energy efficient houses in Canada

The Breathe Green Dome.Earth Sheltered 5/8 sphere.
The cover pic was taken 3 jan 13. The film shows little wear, despite high winds and below zero temps. The film has been installed for 22 months. The key is you build it from the top down. The intergral frame/foundation design when buried becomes one with the earth. The 6 mill film has been exposed to below zero temp. and max of 70 mph wind. In the 10 months of loading on the matrix design has distributed the load better than I expected. The second generation 5/8 sphere, earth sheltered design is under way.I call it the "Live Where You Grow Dome" If your at all thinking of a kit home especially a dome contact me at futurespaces@msn.com. Start out with 6mill film and upgrade to polycarbonate or glass later. In cold climates strawbales can be used. I've monitered temp and Humidity and there is a measurable impact of the constant 56 F. temp resulting from the earth berm and vapour mitigation. The cupola has had a dramatic affect on the air change rate, by tapping into the convective loops that naturally form in domes. In wet conditions I use a annode to slow down the oxidation,or rust. The intergal frame/foundation has resulted in a hurricane proof design. With it buried you would have to shear the bolts for the frame to fail. If earthquakes are a concern you can use re-cycled tires as a buffer as you backfill. The sphere would perform better than 5/8, but would cost more. With a continious vapour barrier you can mitigate radon or anything thats off gassing thats in the soil ...

Cave home in Loire is charming bioclimatic troglodyte house
In the Saumur region of France there are over a thousand miles of underground tunnels and thousands of caves, known as "troglodytes", homes, hotels, restaurants, museums, wineries, farms (silkworms, mushrooms, snails) and even a disco and a zoo (for nocturnal animals like bats). What makes this land so perfect for underground dwellings is its very malleable rock. 100 million years ago, this part of France was covered by sea. When the water receded, it left a layer of tufa, or tuffeau, a type of limestone that turned out to be ideal for building castles, churches and homes in the surrounding area during the Middle Ages. All of this quarrying created lots of tunnels and caves that turned out to be ideal homes, especially for quarrymen. Up until the early 20th century, troglodyte living was still common in the area. Even entire villages, like that of Louresse-Rochemenier, were housed underground. In 2000, when Henri Grevellec retired from teaching, he bought an old quarry and moved into one of the old caves. On his property in Grezille, France, there are 6 caves that had once housed quarry workers centuries ago. The site was abandoned when Grevellec purchased it, but he cleared away the growth and renovated the caves himself. He put in a modern kitchen and bathroom and in his bedroom (at the far back of the cave) he added a skylight to improved air circulation and add a bit of light. Of the 6 original caves, one became a guest room (which he connected by tunnel to his main ...

through any window
underground passive solar house in summer. After rainiest June & July in recorded history in Hemmingford, near Montreal Quebec, everything looks very green. I designed & built this house in the early 1980's. With $3000 I built the shell or the house in one summer-3 roofs covered with recycled barn steel over 2x6 inch cedar tongue & groove boards from 3 old wooden corn silos. The walls are 12 inch concrete blocks filled with concrete & steel with surface bonding on in & out. When I got cash I finished the house in about a year installing windows & doors, insulation, floors & windows. The insulation is 4 inches of extruded polystyrene(blue or pink foam) forming a continuous layer on the exterior of roofs, walls & under the hollow floors made from 4" concrete blocks laid on their side with dyed & stamped concrete making an antique quarry tile effect. My other video has more pictures from original construction. www.youtube.com

Grand Designs - The Underground House - Cumbria
The contents in this video belong to the Channel 4 and I am only posting this up for entertainment purposes. I do not claim any rights on the video and am not making profit off it. Enjoy :) Kevin McCloud revisits Helen Gould and Phil Reddy five years after they built an earth-sheltered home in Cumbria. The presenter finds out if the house has survived without leakage and whether it has delivered the eco-friendly life the couple desired.

Live Where You Grow Dome. Frame and Tire install.
This is the 2nd generation dome in the earth bermed series. The domes are buried, this has two advantages one,is insulation, Below the frost line the ground temp is a constant 57' F. The 2nd advantage is the earth locks in the entire structure this allows extra loading.. The tires in theory will absorb the vibration from a earthquake. This clip also shows how to use tires above grade. This dome has been engineered to meet housing specifications. .This dome is a little extreme in that the south side comes down to grade, where normally you would have at least a 4'ft tire or earth berm. Welding is necessary in door ways and the frame depending how deep you bury it, or how much load you put on it for instance a heliport would need more bracing and welding as opposed to a cupola which will just bolt on. Next begin to close in more of the north side, and install flue. thanks for viewing
