Yemoja
Yemoja is a spirit from the Yoruba religion. She is an Orisha and the mother of all Orishas. She is often syncretized with either Our Lady of Regla, or Stella Maris.

In Yoruba mythology, Yemoja is a mother spirit; patron spirit of women, especially pregnant women; the ocean; and the Ogun river. Her name is a contraction of the Yoruba words "Yeye omo eja" which means "Mother whose children are like fish." This represents the vastness of her motherhood, her fecundity, and her reign over all living things. (This section needs revision. In West African Orisa Tradition Yemoja is worshipped as a high-ranking river deity, and not the sea deity. River deities in Yoruba land include Yemoja, Osun (Oshun), Erinle, Oba, etc. Olokun fills the role of sea deity in Yoruba land.)
As Nana Borocum or Nana Burku, she is pictured as a very old woman, dressed in black and mauve, connected to mud, swamps, and earth. Nana Buluku is a Vodun in Dahomey mythology. (This section needs revision. Yemoja and Nana Buruku are two separate deities with different praise names, different sacred objects, different parts of nature and human condition that they are patrons of, and different priesthoods.)

Yemanja (remember my home , heal me ) goddess of the sea
Yemaya is the Yorùbá Orisha or Goddess of the living Ocean, considered the mother of all. She is the source of all the waters, including the rivers of western Africa, especially the River Ogun. Her name is a contraction of Yey Omo Eja, which means "Mother Whose Children are the Fish." As all life is thought to have begun in the sea, all life is held to have begun with Yemaya. She is motherly and strongly protective, and cares deeply for all Her children, comforting them and cleansing them of sorrow. She is said to be able to cure infertility in women, and cowrie shells represent Her wealth. She does not easily lose Her temper, but when angered She can be quite destructive and violent, as the sea in a storm.

Yemaya was a primordial spiritual entity charged by the supreme deity to assist Obatala with the creation of humanity. She is mainly venerated by women as the giver of life within the Yoruba spirituality.
In traditional Yoruba culture, Yemaya is seen as the queen of the sea, she first appeared in Yorubaland in modern day Nigeria where she is known as the Orisha of the Ogun River. Yemoja is frequently portrayed as the wife of various male Orisha and was perceived to be at the root of numerous ancient goddesses. The Orisha Yemaya is often depicted as a beautiful, queenly-looking mermaid wearing a dress with seven skirts symbolizing the seven great oceans. Yemaya went by many other names including Yemoja and Iemanja, the etymology of her name reveals that Yemaya is a contraction of the Yoruba words Iye meaning mother, Omo meaning children and Eja meaning fish, when put together and translated roughly means Mother whose children are the fish. Originally, Yemaya was a river entity who had nothing to do with the ocean nor the seas. Her worship spread beyond African borders, and was notable in Cuba and Brazil where she came to be called Yemaya, which is in fact the Spanish variant of the Yoruba Yemoja. Some stories describe Yemaya as the most nurturing Yoruba deity whose motherly presence was crucial for the beginning of all life, She is viewed in a way as the protector of women and children, and as such Yemaya governs everything pertaining to a mother’s relationship to their offspring. Yemaya also played an important role in another myth involving her counterpart, Olokun, the Orisha representing the unknown and deep bottom of the seas while she represents all superficial waters. the status of these two increased in prominence in the Americas because the enslaved survivors propitiated Olokun to bless their lost kinsmen, and petitioned Yemaya for an alleviation of their suffering. Because of her popularity she became a threat, so many attempts were conducted to annihilate African traditional practices, but they were met with hostility through the establishment of ethnic social organizations in Brazil and Cuba, as well as through the masquerading of the Orisha with the Saints of the Catholic Church. When she started to be syncretized to the Virgin Mary, the devotion to Yemaya spread in every part of Latin America.
Yemaya was a kind and loving deity who always reminds her children that even the worst disaster in life can be endured, she is among the most beloved and prominent spirit in the Candomblé, Santeria and other African diasporic traditions.

Yemaya is the Yorùbá Orisha or Goddess of the living Ocean, considered the mother of all. She is the source of all the waters, including the rivers of western Africa, especially the River Ogun. Her name is a contraction of Yey Omo Eja, which means "Mother Whose Children are the Fish." As all life is thought to have begun in the sea, all life is held to have begun with Yemaya. She is motherly and strongly protective, and cares deeply for all Her children, comforting them and cleansing them of sorrow. She is said to be able to cure infertility in women, and cowrie shells represent Her wealth. She does not easily lose Her temper, but when angered She can be quite destructive and violent, as the sea in a storm.

Yemaya was a primordial spiritual entity charged by the supreme deity to assist Obatala with the creation of humanity. She is mainly venerated by women as the giver of life within the Yoruba spirituality.
In traditional Yoruba culture, Yemaya is seen as the queen of the sea, she first appeared in Yorubaland in modern day Nigeria where she is known as the Orisha of the Ogun River. Yemoja is frequently portrayed as the wife of various male Orisha and was perceived to be at the root of numerous ancient goddesses. The Orisha Yemaya is often depicted as a beautiful, queenly-looking mermaid wearing a dress with seven skirts symbolizing the seven great oceans. Yemaya went by many other names including Yemoja and Iemanja, the etymology of her name reveals that Yemaya is a contraction of the Yoruba words Iye meaning mother, Omo meaning children and Eja meaning fish, when put together and translated roughly means Mother whose children are the fish. Originally, Yemaya was a river entity who had nothing to do with the ocean nor the seas. Her worship spread beyond African borders, and was notable in Cuba and Brazil where she came to be called Yemaya, which is in fact the Spanish variant of the Yoruba Yemoja. Some stories describe Yemaya as the most nurturing Yoruba deity whose motherly presence was crucial for the beginning of all life, She is viewed in a way as the protector of women and children, and as such Yemaya governs everything pertaining to a mother’s relationship to their offspring. Yemaya also played an important role in another myth involving her counterpart, Olokun, the Orisha representing the unknown and deep bottom of the seas while she represents all superficial waters. the status of these two increased in prominence in the Americas because the enslaved survivors propitiated Olokun to bless their lost kinsmen, and petitioned Yemaya for an alleviation of their suffering. Because of her popularity she became a threat, so many attempts were conducted to annihilate African traditional practices, but they were met with hostility through the establishment of ethnic social organizations in Brazil and Cuba, as well as through the masquerading of the Orisha with the Saints of the Catholic Church. When she started to be syncretized to the Virgin Mary, the devotion to Yemaya spread in every part of Latin America.
Yemaya was a kind and loving deity who always reminds her children that even the worst disaster in life can be endured, she is among the most beloved and prominent spirit in the Candomblé, Santeria and other African diasporic traditions.

Yemoja
Yemoja is a spirit from the Yoruba religion. She is an Orisha and the mother of all Orishas. She is often syncretized with either Our Lady of Regla, or Stella Maris.
Name variants
Africa
In Yoruba mythology, Yemoja is a mother spirit; patron spirit of women, especially pregnant women; the ocean; and the Ogun river. Her name is a contraction of the Yoruba words "Yeye omo eja" which means "Mother whose children are like fish." This represents the vastness of her motherhood, her fecundity, and her reign over all living things. (This section needs revision. In West African Orisa Tradition Yemoja is worshipped as a high-ranking river deity, and not the sea deity. River deities in Yoruba land include Yemoja, Osun (Oshun), Erinle, Oba, etc. Olokun fills the role of sea deity in Yoruba land.)
As Nana Borocum or Nana Burku, she is pictured as a very old woman, dressed in black and mauve, connected to mud, swamps, and earth. Nana Buluku is a Vodun in Dahomey mythology. (This section needs revision. Yemoja and Nana Buruku are two separate deities with different praise names, different sacred objects, different parts of nature and human condition that they are patrons of, and different priesthoods.)
