  Australia ( /əˈstreɪljə/), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent as well as the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north; the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.
  For at least 40,000 years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who belonged to one or more of roughly 250 language groups. After discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was explored and an additional five self-governing Crown Colonies were established.

  Bruce Spence
  Bruce Spence, born September 17, 1945 is an actor, having spent most of his career performing in Australia. Bruce attended Henderson High School in West Auckland.
  Spence is most known for his roles as the Gyro Captain in Mad Max 2 and as Jedediah the pilot in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and as "Zedd" (Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander) in Legend of the Seeker.
  He also performed the voice of Chum in Finding Nemo, the Mouth of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the Trainman in The Matrix Revolutions, and Tion Medon in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - the only actor to appear in all three major trilogies.
  At 2.01 m (6 ft 7 in), Spence is one of the tallest actors to have played a leading role.
  He acted as the paleontologist (Huxley) alongside fellow actor Felix Nobis, in the Australian performance of BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs: The Live Experience. In his role, Spence narrates the activities of life-sized mechanical dinosaurs operated by teams of puppeteers and drivers.

• David Williamson
  David Keith Williamson AO (born 19 February 1942) is one of Australia's best-known playwrights. He has also written screenplays and teleplays.
  David Williamson was born in Melbourne and brought up in Bairnsdale, Victoria. He initially studied mechanical engineering at the University of Melbourne from 1960.^{[citation needed]} His early forays into the theatre were as an actor and writer of skits for the Engineers' Revue at Melbourne University's Union Theatre at lunchtime during the early 1960s.
  After a stint as a lecturer for Swinburne University, he turned to writing plays in 1967.
  Williamson rose to prominence in the early 1970s, with works such as Don's Party (later turned into a 1976 film), a comic drama set during the 1969 federal election; and The Removalists (1971). He also collaborated on the screenplays for Gallipoli (1981) and The Year of Living Dangerously (1982). Williamson's work as a playwright focuses on themes of politics, loyalty and family in contemporary urban Australia, particularly in two of its major cities, Melbourne and Sydney.

• Graeme Blundell
  Graeme Blundell (born 1945) is an Australian actor, director, producer, writer and biographer.
  Blundell was born in Melbourne; he grew up in Clifton Hill, a suburb of Melbourne. He was educated at University High School and the University of Melbourne.
  In his early years, Blundell worked at La Mama Theatre, The Pram Factory, Hoopla, the Playbox Theatre Company, and the Melbourne Theatre Company. He directed and acted in the premiere performance of Jack Hibberd's play Dimboola at La Mama. His first television appearance was as an uncredited extra in the debut episode of Homicide (1964). He is best known as playing the title character in the 70's sex-comedy film Alvin Purple.
  He has written extensively in The Australian newspaper as well as writing biographies of Brett Whiteley (Brett Whiteley: An Unauthorised Life, 1996, with his then wife Margot Hilton), and Graham Kennedy (King, 2003).
  Since March 2011, Blundell has hosted "Sunday Night At The Movies with Graeme Blundell" on FOXTEL's Fox Classics channel.

• Helmut Bakaitis
  Helmut Bakaitis (born 26 September 1944) is an Australian director, actor and screenwriter.
  Bakaitis was born in Lauban, Silesia, Germany (now Lubań, Poland) to Lithuanian parents. He was educated at Fort Street High School, Sydney, where he made a startlingly strong impression with his mature characterization of the title role in "Hamlet", a school production which was performed on the steps of the Sydney War memorial. He is best known for his role in the The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions as the character The Architect. Helmut held the position of Head of Directing at Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) for nine years until 2007.

  Jacki Weaver
  Jacqueline Ruth "Jacki" Weaver (born 25 May 1947) is an Australian theatre, film, and television actress. She is best known outside Australia for her performance in Animal Kingdom, for which she was nominated for the 2011 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
  Weaver was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Her father, Arthur, was a Sydney solicitor, and her mother, Edith (née Simpson), a migrant from northern England. She attended Hornsby Girls' High School.
  She has had a number of relationships/marriages, including with director Richard Wherrett and media figure Derryn Hinch. She has a son, Dylan, and two grandchildren.
  Weaver has been working in Australian film, stage and television since the 1960s.
  In 1964 at the Palace Theatre in Sydney, Weaver and a number of other Australian singers such as The Delltones and her then-boyfriend Bryan Davies performed a satire on the Gidget movies, in which Weaver performed as "Gadget."
  In the mid-1960s, she appeared on the Australian music show Bandstand. In one appearance, she sang a 1920s-style pastiche, the novelty song "I Love Onions."

• Madeleine Orr
  Madeleine Grace Orr (1914 - 29 June 1979) was an Australian-born film, stage and TV actress who worked for many years in London. She is best known as the first person to portray Madge Allsop, bridesmaid and companion to Barry Humphries' most popular and enduring comic character, Dame Edna Everage.
  Born in West Melbourne in 1914, Madeleine Grace Orr was the daughter of Charles Hugh Orr (1883–1932) and his wife Madeleine, nee Walsh, (1888–1961). Charles Orr was a caterer and hotelkeeper by profession, and he and his wife ran a succession of inner city hotels in the early twentieth century including the City Court Hotel and Tattersall's Hotel, both in Russell Street, Melbourne. After Charles' death in 1932, his widow continued as licensee of the latter hotel for some years thence.
  During the 1930s, Charles and Madeleine's like-named daughter maintained a high profile in Melbourne's social circles, with her name often recorded in the women's column of the daily newspapers as a guest at parties, balls and dances. The younger Madeleine Orr was reported present, for example, at a 1934 junior auxiliary dance for the District Nurses' Society, a 1935 charity ball aboard the troopship Duntroon and a 1937 German-themed beer garden party. Such connections inevitably gained her entree into Melbourne's theatrical community. In 1935, Orr was noted as one of several young women who sold programmes and sweets at a special fundraising performance that was held at Her Majesty's Theatre.

• Ocker
  The term "ocker" is used both as a noun and adjective for an Australian who speaks and acts in an uncultured manner, using a broad Australian accent (or Strine). The typical ocker is "usually found in a blue singlet and rubber thongs (foot wear) with a tinnie in his hand propping up a bar".
  Richard Neville defined ockerism as being "about conviviality: comradeship with a touch of good-hearted sexism". It is mostly fairly neutral, even affectionate - although it can be used in a pejorative sense, especially by Australians who consider themselves cultured or enlightened.
  Ocker was recorded from 1916 as a nickname for anyone called Oscar. The 1920s Australian comic strip Ginger Meggs contained a character called Oscar ('Ocker') Stevens. The term "ocker" for a stereotypically uncouth Australian came into use when a character of that name, played by Ron Frazer, appeared in the satirical television comedy series, The Mavis Bramston Show.
  Politicians, including former Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd, will often take on "ocker" cultural elements such as slang to appeal to various audiences.

• Tim Burstall
  Tim Burstall (20 April 1927, Stockton-on-Tees, UK – 19 April 2004, Melbourne) was an Australian film director, writer and producer, best known for the motion picture Alvin Purple.
  Burstall was a key figure in Australian postwar cinema and was instrumental in rebuilding the Australian film industry at a time when it had been effectively dead for years. He created groundbreaking Australian films including Stork, Alvin Purple, End Play, Eliza Fraser, The Last of the Knucklemen and the 1986 adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's novel Kangaroo.
  Burstall also launched the film careers of many well-known actors including Bruce Spence, Jacki Weaver, Graeme Blundell, Jack Thompson, John Waters and Judy Davis. His wife Betty, an important figure in her own right, founded the pioneering La Mama Theatre in Melbourne in the late '60s. Many leading Australian 'new wave' playwrights including David Williamson had their first successes there, and Burstall was an integral part of the fertile creative scene that centred on the theatre.
