An Empire Award is an accolade bestowed by Empire, Britain's biggest selling film magazine, to recognize excellence of professionals in the local and global film industry. The awards are voted for by readers of the magazine and in an annual ceremony, the Empire Awards, the winners are presented with the award which is covered by Empire and sometimes also televised. They were sponsored by Sony Ericsson^[1] between the 8th and the 13th Empire Awards with the exception of the 12th which was without a ceremony,^[2] and since the 14th Empire Awards are sponsored by Jameson Irish Whiskey.^[3]

The first Empire Awards ceremony was held on 1996, to honour outstanding film achievements of the 1995 film season. The most recent ceremony, honouring films in 2011, was held at Grosvenor House Hotel on March 25, 2012.

Eddie Kadi (born 18 May 1983 in Kinshasa) is a UK comedian, presenter, actor and MC.

Early life[link]

A resident of Little Ilford School, West London since 1992, he is a past student of Fulham Primary School, Henry Compton Secondary School,^[1] William Morris Academy^[2] and Kingston University from which he graduated with BSc Honours in Media Technology.^[3][4] Kadi served as President of the Afro-Caribbean Society at the University.^[5]

Comedy[link]

In 2006 Eddie Kadi won the BECA Award for Best Comedy Newcomer. He went on to stage a series of sold-out solo concerts – two of those during 2009 at the indigO2.^[4][6] In September 2010, he performed at London's O2 Arena where he sold out the 13,000 arena according to his numerous (2) appearances on Fighting Talk.^[6] He has also released a 4 disc DVD collection, and completed numerous radio, television and film projects.

Kadi is a presenter on BBC 1Xtra and co-presents the OHTV series It’s All Good.^[7] He has fronted documentaries with Current TV in France and MTV Base in Mali as well as station idents for MTV and the BBC. He appeared on Fighting Talk on 27 November 2010, where he finished in the traditional debutant's position of last. He made his second appearance on 22nd January 2011 and was involved in provoking Tom Watt to produce the immortal line “I’m not here to talk about real-estate”

Kadi's work as a voiceover artist includes a characterisation in the Tiger Aspect^[8]produced animated TV series Tinga Tinga Tales. His film projects include the lead role in the short film Area Boys,^[9] shot in Africa and premiered at the 51st London Film Festival.^[10]

Eddie also appears as Reggy in the film Shank,^[11]set for release in 2010.

Brian Wilson Aldiss, OBE (born 18 August 1925) is an English author of both general fiction and science fiction. His byline reads either Brian W. Aldiss or simply Brian Aldiss. Greatly influenced by science fiction pioneer H. G. Wells, Aldiss is a vice-president of the international H. G. Wells Society. He is also (with Harry Harrison) co-president of the Birmingham Science Fiction Group. Aldiss was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 2000, and has received two Hugo Awards, one Nebula Award, and one John W. Campbell Memorial Award.^[1] His influential works include the short story "Super-Toys Last All Summer Long", the basis for the Stanley Kubrick-developed Steven Spielberg film A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

Biography[link]

Aldiss's father ran a department store that his grandfather had established, and the family lived above it.^[2] At the age of 6, Brian was sent to board at West Buckland School in Devon, which he attended until his late teens.^[2] In 1943, he joined the Royal Signals regiment, and saw action in Burma; his Army experience inspired the Horatio Stubbs second and third books^{[citation needed]}.

After World War II, he worked as a bookseller in Oxford. Besides short science fiction for various magazines, he wrote a number of short pieces for a booksellers trade journal about life in a fictitious bookshop, and this attracted the attention of Charles Monteith, an editor at the British publishers Faber and Faber. As a result of this, Aldiss's first book was The Brightfount Diaries (1955), a novel in diary form about the life of a sales assistant in a bookshop.

In 1955, The Observer newspaper ran a competition for a short story set in the year 2500, which Aldiss won with a story entitled "Not For An Age". The Brightfount Diaries had been a minor success, and Faber asked Aldiss if he had any more writing that they could look at with a view to publishing. Aldiss confessed to being a science fiction author, to the delight of the publishers, who had a number of science fiction fans in high places, and so his first science fiction book, a collection of short stories entitled Space, Time and Nathaniel was published. By this time, his earnings from writing equalled the wages he got in the bookshop, so he made the decision to become a full-time writer.

He was voted the Most Promising New Author at the World Science Fiction Convention in 1958, and elected President of the British Science Fiction Association in 1960. He was the literary editor of the Oxford Mail newspaper during the 1960s. Around 1964 he and his long-time collaborator Harry Harrison started the first ever journal of science fiction criticism, Science Fiction Horizons, which during its brief span of two issues published articles and reviews by such authors as James Blish, and featured a discussion among Aldiss, C. S. Lewis, and Kingsley Amis in the first issues, and an interview with William S. Burroughs in the second.

Besides his own writings, he has had great success as an anthologist. For Faber he edited Introducing SF, a collection of stories typifying various themes of science fiction, and Best Fantasy Stories. In 1961 he edited an anthology of reprinted short science fiction for the British paperback publisher Penguin Books under the title Penguin Science Fiction. This was remarkably successful, going into numerous reprints, and was followed up by two further anthologies, More Penguin Science Fiction (1963), and Yet More Penguin Science Fiction (1964). The later anthologies enjoyed the same success as the first, and all three were eventually published together as The Penguin Science Fiction Omnibus (1973), which also went into a number of reprints. In the 1970s, he produced several large collections of classic grand-scale science fiction, under the titles Space Opera (1974), Space Odysseys (1975), Galactic Empires (1976), Evil Earths (1976), and Perilous Planets (1978) which were quite successful. Around this time, he edited a large-format volume Science Fiction Art (1975), with selections of artwork from the magazines and pulps.

In response to the results from the planetary probes of the 1960s and 1970s, which showed that Venus was completely unlike the hot, tropical jungle usually depicted in science fiction, he and Harry Harrison edited an anthology Farewell, Fantastic Venus!, reprinting stories based on the pre-probe ideas of Venus. He also edited, with Harrison, a series of anthologies The Year's Best Science Fiction (1968-1976?)

Brian Aldiss also invented a form of extremely short story called the Minisaga. The Daily Telegraph hosted a competition for the best Minisaga for several years and Aldiss was the judge.^[3] He has edited several anthologies of the best Minisagas.

He traveled to Yugoslavia, where he met Yugoslav fans in Ljubljana, Slovenia; he published a travel book about Yugoslavia; he published an alternative-history fantasy story about Serbian kings in the Middle Ages; and he wrote a novel called The Malacia Tapestry, about an alternative Dalmatia.

He has achieved the honor of "Permanent Special Guest" at ICFA, the conference for the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts, which he attends annually.

He was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to literature in HM Queen Elizabeth II's Birthday Honours list, announced on 11 June 2005.

In January 2007 he appeared on Desert Island Discs. His choice of record to 'save' was Old Rivers sung by Walter Brennan, his choice of book was John Halpern’s biography of John Osborne, and his luxury a banjo. The full selection of eight favourite records is on the BBC website [1].

On 1 July 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Liverpool in recognition of his contribution to literature.^[4]

In addition to a highly successful career as a writer, Aldiss is also an accomplished artist whose abstract compositions or 'isolées' are influenced by the work of Giorgio de Chirico and Wassily Kandinsky.^[5] His first solo exhibition The Other Hemisphere was held in Oxford, UK, in August–September 2010, and the exhibition's centrepiece 'Metropolis' (shown right) has since been released as a limited edition fine art print [2].

Brayden Schenn ( /ˈʃɛn/; born August 22, 1991) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre currently playing for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Schenn was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings fifth overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut for the Kings in October 2009, after being called up on an emergency basis. Schenn has represented Canada internationally at several tournaments, and won two silver medals at the 2010 and 2011 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. At the 2011 tournament, Schenn tied Canada's record for points in a single tournament, and was selected to the Tournament's All-Star Team as well as being named Top Forward, and Most Valuable Player. Hockey career[link]

Minor[link]

Schenn played minor hockey in his hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He played AAA midget hockey for the Saskatoon Contacts. During the 2006–07 season, his teammates included Jared Cowen and Carter Ashton.^[1] In the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft, Schenn was selected in the first round, ninth overall by the Brandon Wheat Kings.^[2] His teammates Cowen and Ashton were selected first and eighth overall respectively.^[3] In his last season of midget hockey he scored 70 points in 41 games.^[4]

Junior[link]

Schenn started his major junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings in 2007–08. He was Brandon's first pick in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft. Schenn made his WHL debut on September 21, 2007, against the Saskatoon Blades, earning his first WHL point, an assist.^[5] Later in the season, on October 17, he notched his first WHL goal against the Red Deer Rebels.^[5] Schenn finished his first season as the Wheat Kings' leading scorer^[6] and as the top rookie scorer in the WHL tallying 28 goals and 43 assists for 71 points,^[7] earning him the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as WHL Rookie of the Year, and a spot on the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) All-Rookie Team.^[8] He was also the inaugural winner of the 2007–08 Boston Pizza WHL 'Fan's Choice' Award.^[4] He also picked up the Wheat Kings team awards for Rookie of the Year and Most Popular Player.^[4]

Schenn spent the 2008–09 season playing with the Wheat Kings and served as their co-captain alongside Matt Calvert for the team.^[4] In January 2009, he was named the WHL^[9] and CHL^[10] Player of the Week, after scoring 7 points in two games.^[9] Also in January, Schenn was selected as the winner of the H. L. (Krug) Crawford Memorial Medal which is emblematic of athletic achievement in western Manitoba.^[11] He finished the season with 85 points in 69 games to lead the Wheat Kings in scoring a second consecutive season.^[12] He finished seventh overall in scoring for the WHL, and was named to the WHL's Eastern Conference Second All-Star Team.^[4] During the season, Schenn played in the CHL Top Prospects Game and represented the WHL in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.^[4]

Leading up to the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Schenn had been listed as the third highest prospect among WHL players in the NHL Central Scouting Service (CSS)'s preliminary rankings,^[13] while International Scouting (ISS) ranked him at fifth overall and first in the WHL.^[14] Schenn's ranking remained the same at fifth overall with the NHL CSS's midway ranking.^[15] E. J. McGuire, the director of NHL's Central Scouting Bureau compared facets of Schenn's game to Jonathan Cheechoo and Joe Thornton.^[11] At the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, he was drafted fifth overall by the Los Angeles Kings.^[8]

At the start of the 2009–10 hockey season, Schenn attended training camp with the Kings, but was considered a long shot to make the team.^[16] Schenn was returned to Brandon after being one of the last cuts at camp.^[17] He served as Brandon's captain for the 2009–10 WHL season.^[4] During the season, Schenn again represented the WHL in the Canada-Russia Challenge series.^[4] He finished the regular season with 99 points (34 goals, 65 assists) in 59 games,^[18] which tied him for fourth overall in WHL scoring with teammate Matt Calvert.^[19] Schenn was named to the WHL Eastern Conference First All-Star Team.^[20]

On December 3, 2010, the Kings returned Schenn to the Brandon Wheat Kings.^[21] Schenn played two games with the Wheat Kings during the 2010-11 season before joining Team Canada at the 2011 World Junior Championships. After the tournament was complete, Schenn was dealt to his hometown Saskatoon Blades for a package of draft picks and prospects.^[22] Schenn played in 27 games with the Blades, scoring 21 goals and adding 32 assists.^[18] Despite playing less than half a season in the WHL, Schenn was named to the league's Eastern Conference Second All-Star Team at the end of the regular season.^[23]

Professional[link]

He played his first NHL game on November 26, 2009, against the Vancouver Canucks after being called up on an emergency basis and signed to an amateur, one-game try-out contract.^[24] At the time of his debut, Schenn was the third youngest player of all-time to skate for the team.^[4][25] On March 3, 2010, Schenn was signed to a 3-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings.^[25] After training camp for the 2010-11 season, Schenn made the Kings roster but saw limited playing time. He appeared in nine games with the Kings, and spent time with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League for conditioning purposes.^[26] On December 3, 2010, the Kings returned Schenn to the Brandon Wheat Kings.^[21] Following, the Saskatoon Blades' exit from the 2011 WHL Playoffs, he was assigned by the Kings back to the Monarchs on April 17, 2011.^[27]

He was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, along with Wayne Simmonds and a 2012 2nd round pick, for Mike Richards and Rob Bordson on June 23, 2011.^[28] After sustaining an apparent shoulder injury in the Flyers 2011-2012 training camp, Schenn was sent down to the Adirondack Phantoms for conditioning and salary cap purposes. He recorded 2 assists in his Phantoms debut, a 6-3 win over the Connecticut Whale. In his second game with Adirondack he registered three goals and an assist in a 6-3 win against Bridgeport. On October 20, 2011, Schenn made his Flyers debut in a 5-2 loss to Washington, a game in which he struggled and was -3. He played three more games with the Flyers. However on October 26, 2011, Schenn broke a bone in his foot blocking a slapshot in a 5-1 loss to Montreal. He missed just under a month of playing time. Upon returning from injury he was reassigned to Adirondack for conditioning purposes. On January 2, 2012, Schenn scored his first NHL goal on a rebound during the 2nd period in a game against the New York Rangers, scoring against Henrik Lundqvist during the 2012 NHL Winter Classic.

Schenn started his Hockey Canada career by representing Saskatchewan at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon where his team finished 7th.^[4] During the 2007–08 season, Schenn played for Canada West at the 2008 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, where he was the leading scorer.^[4] After his season with Brandon was over, Schenn played with Team Canada at the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships in Kazan, Russia, as one of five 16-year-olds, capturing a gold medal.^[4] He tallied 1 goal and 2 assists in 7 games in the tournament.^[29] During the summer, he also competed in the 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, earning another gold medal in the Czech Republic. Schenn served as an alternate captain at the Hlinka Memorial Tournament, and recorded 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) in four games.^[4]

During the 2008–09 season, Schenn was invited to Team Canada's tryout camp for the 2009 World Junior Championships,^[4] but did not make the final squad.^[30] Schenn was invited to Hockey Canada's summer evaluation camp in August 2009, and also to the December selection camp for the 2010 World Junior Championships.^[4] He made the team and competed in the tournament that was hosted in his home province of Saskatchewan.^[31] Schenn won a silver medal with Canada, after they lost the gold medal game in overtime to the American team.^[25]

When the Kings returned Schenn to the WHL in December 2010, it allowed him to try out for Canada's team at the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championships.^[21] Schenn made the team after the December selection camp, and was selected as one of the alternate captains.^[32] In Canada's preliminary round game against the Czech Republic, Schenn was named player of the game.^[33] Against Norway, Schenn tied Canada's record for goals in a single game (held by Mario Lemieux and Simon Gagne) with four. He also added an assist to finish the game with five points.^[34] In Canada's gold medal loss to Russia, Schenn scored a goal and added an assist. He recorded 18 points in the tournament, tying Canada's all-time record for a single tournament, set by Dale McCourt in 1977.^[35] After the tournament, Schenn was the tournament's top scorer, and was named to the media All-Star team for the event. The IIHF Directorate named him Best Forward and Tournament MVP.^[36] Canada's coaching staff selected him as one of the team's top three players for the tournament.^[37] At the end of the tournament, it was revealed that Schenn had been playing with a separated shoulder he suffered during Canada's quarter-final victory against Switzerland.^[38]

Brayden Schenn was born August 22, 1991, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Jeff and Rita Schenn.^[4] His older brother Luke is a National Hockey League defenceman playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs.^[11] They have two younger sisters Madison and Macy.^[4] He wears jersey #10 because Pavel Bure was his favourite player as a child.
