Friskeeing, On a Jet Plane

The Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships start tomorrow!  Hopefully you've success found the website with all the useful links:  http://amuc2012.waultimate.com/ is the main place, with the links to Facebook, and of course Forcesideline will be doing their at http://forcesideline.net/mixed-division/amuc2012-pool-play-predictions plus lots of teams have the Twitter and all.  One of the last teams we'll talk to here though is Friskee … and here's Max Halden, on his way to the airport.

afda.com:  What's up with Friskee then?

Max:  We're up, that's what.  The core of our team has been playing together since high school or around that time (although when we started playing some of our team had already graduated from Uni while others were still in primary school).  The veritable powerhouse of Ultimate Frisbee that is North Sydney Boys was where some of us started playing in Year 11 about 6 years ago now. We played our first Spring Hat tourney in 2007, joined with some other juniors to form Friskee that Summer and the rest is history (and the subject of this interview).

When we started Friskee 5 years ago we were proudly a tie-dye team. I distinctly remember our first tie dying session which was an unmitigated success, except that the shirts we bought were really really tight and the colours ran like crazy after the first wash. But we felt it was in keeping with the hippie spirit that underlied the game (we were told). I still have my tie dyed shorts from this first experiment. Pink and blue emerged from the tie dye experiment when we made our first uniform order as the best colours, with the love heart always being an important part of our logo. In fact most teams when they played against us the first time called us "Friskee Love".

As children of a social media generation, you can guarantee that if you follow @tfswebb, @MrMaxHalden @Palex90 or any of our other team members on Twitter you'll maybe get updates on our ultimate activities in between witty one-liners, inane updates on the miniature of our lives and images of cats.

As far as preparation goes, Perth is always different (he says with nearly no experience in the area) so this year was a bit unusual. Our selection process, as per our age group/maturity level is probably best described a Mean Girls-esque popularity contest where only the (in our eyes) coolest kids get an invite to the team. Our newest recruits have either played league with us in the past or share our music taste. Ideally both.  Organisation has been awful (we only booked accommodation a few days ago) and with the exception of a few scrimmages and strength sessions we are essentially hoping to fly over to Perth without training, scoop a third consecutive medal and fly home.

Of course, whatever else happens we have fully planned our Gangnam style time outs, and after feeling completely wronged by the shocking costume party scandal of 2011 which we will only refer to as "Flamingo-gate". (I mean seriously who do we have to sleep with to get a best dressed prize up in here?!) we want to win the party this year. Whatever means necessary.

Bec Carman is the only person on our team who remembers a time when The Living End weren't producing albums and tight and bright was cool the first time.  I can't tell whether the second half of the question is a fat joke so I'll just say that I think she doesn't know she's beautiful (and that's what makes her beautiful).

As a young team, all relationships are liable to change without prior notice. It is not the responsibility of the author to establish the veracity of the relationships and any relationships entered into will be at the discretion of the parties involved. Conditions apply, batteries not included. (Two at the moment and they are very nice.)

I should also note that Le Grande Coq Sportif can autofellate their namesakes.

We are totally psyched for our Perth trip. Georgia Ewan is extremely excited to once again visit her beloved Boab Tree and Nick Dousset is buying everyone a beer at the Little Creatures Brewery. Most of us though are doing a FIFO due to time/money constraints. When in Perth do as the Perthians do (Perth Siders? Perthites? Perth peeps needs a better demonym).

Announcer:  Please turn off your mobile devices, and return your tray tables and seats to the upright position …

Max:  Bye!

afda.com:  Thanks Max - have fun.
