7 Wonders of India: Mahabodhi Temple
Mahabodhi Temple is located in Bodhgaya in Gaya district of Bihar. Constructed of brick, the temple is surrounded on all four sides by stone railings, about two metres high. The railings reveal two distinct types, both in style as well as the materials used. This is the place where Buddha attained enlightenment. Buddhist Emperor Asoka visited Bodh Gaya with the intention of establishing a monastery and shrine. As part of the temple, he built the diamond throne (called the Vajrasana), attempting to mark the exact spot of where the Buddha's enlightenment was established. It is one of the oldest brick structures to have survived in eastern India.

Bodh Gaya
Bodh Gaya or Bodhgaya is a city in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is famous for being the place of Gautama Buddha's attainment of nirvana (Enlightenment). Historically, it was known as the Bodhimanda (ground around the Bodhi-tree), Uruvela, Sambodhi, Vajrasana and Mahabodhi. The name Bodh Gaya did not come into use until the 18th century. The main monastery of Bodhgaya used to be called the Bodhimanda-vihāra (Pali). Now it is called the Mahabodhi Temple. For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is the most important of the main four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. In 2002, Mahabodhi Temple, located in Bodh Gaya, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The surrounding town, by contrast, is dusty, noisy and somewhat polluted, due in large part to the large numbers of pilgrims and tourists who visit there. A new development plan has been proposed to "ensure a sustainable and prosperous future" for Bodh Gaya, but has become controversial because such a plan may require the relocation of whole neighborhoods. -wikipedia

Indian Village Water Crisis
CHAN: Faced with a drinking water shortage, people in India's eastern Gaya district are forced to drink filthy water, unfit even for cleaning purposes. Here's more on their situation. STORY: Locals of Sarangpur village claim there is no other source of drinking water in the area and that they drink this muddy well water due to the crisis. They claim that the dirty well water is the main source of water for around 50 households and blame the water crisis on the government's apathy to correct the problem. They say that there are even frogs are in the filthy water. [Virendra Mhamri, Local Villager]: "There is acute water shortage here and we don't have any alternatives. All we have is this water you see flowing. It's enough for some 50 households in the village." Soaring temperatures are causing severe droughts. Wells and other sources of water are drying up and the parched land is proving to be a nightmare for locals. [Murti Devi, Local Villager]: "There is no alternative and we are forced to drink this dirty and smelly water. When the water of this well dries up, we are forced to fetch water from far off villages. Besides, there is a hand pump which is also far away." Many states in India suffer severe dry spells and water crisis during scorching summer months.

Girl Stars - Tehseen the Girls' Hostel Warden
Tehseen works as a girls' hostel warden in Kasturba Gandhi Girls School (Balika Vidyalaya) in Guruwa, Gaya district, Bihar. Tehseen looks after as many as 70 girls who have come to stay at the hostel to be able to complete their education. Parents leave their daughters in Tehseen's care, knowing that they will be safe, healthy and learn as much as they can. Her father died when she was just seven months old and her mother worked in other people's houses unable to make ends meet. The "Girl Stars" project includes this series of films documenting the stories of girls from the most disadvantaged communities across five northern states of India who, through attaining education, have managed to break the shackles of socio-economic constraints and make successful, self-sufficient lives for themselves. These young women have become role models in their communities and beyond, inspiring girls to go to school and continue their education.
