www.pbs.org For a decade—1956 to 1966—the Ferus Gallery was the catalyst of a nascent modern art scene, grooming idealistic beatniks into competitive, often-brilliant artists. It also helped to solidify the careers of many of New York's shining stars including: Lichtenstein, Warhol and Johns. What was lost and gained is a complex web of egos, passions, money and art. THE COOL SCHOOL premieres Tuesday, June 10 onINDEPENDENT LENS, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Terrence Howard, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, INDEPENDENT LENS is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. Visit the Web site for more: www.pbs.org

Electric Avenue Party Acid Test
Electric Avenue Party Acid Test
it's a party with the glory boys and babes of classic Venice. Callifornia. They were the surfers that made the art that made them distinctively rebel hell-raisers of the Left Coast, and to hell with the Olde World. And now, well, everyone is uh, kind of, olde. We do become our grandparents, do we not? (I wish my parents were like these folk in the feisty dept.) Then again, my parents have maintained detent forever no matter how much they hated each other! But it's not about age because these artists are ageless. They are some of the most important artists to come from the Los Angeles, and specifically the Venice to Malibu art scene. They had all started their careers in the three seminal contemporary art galleries of the 50's and 60's - the Ferus Gallery, the Dwan Gallery and the Nicholas Wilder Gallery. Some of them are featured in the Primary Atmospheres Exhibition that opened at Nyehaus and David Zwirner Gallery (2010), and all of them are part of the art historical exhibition to come - Venice to Venice. Watch for new clips as we make the movie!

Swell: Art 1950-2010 at Nyehaus, Petzel and Metro Pictures
Swell: Art 1950-2010 at Nyehaus, Petzel and Metro Pictures
James Kalm is suffering a hot time in the city, and the back of his neck is dirty and gritty, but the myth of sunshine, ocean breezes, surf and beach bunnies is irresistible. Although New York tries to project an artistic hegemony, recent trends have once again focused on the relevance and prescience of work done by California artists. This three gallery mega show was curated by Tim Nye and Jacqueline Miro and is presented at Neyhaus, Friedrich Petzel and Metro Pictures Galleries.. It brings together art inspired by surf and beach culture, and features artists associated with the "Light and Space" and "Finish Fetish" movements from the 1960s as well as the seminal Ferus Gallery.

George Herms - V2V Taos to Topanga - Production Treatment
George Herms - V2V Taos to Topanga - Production Treatment
The sound track by Pablo Martin has been added. Makes a huge difference. Tim Nye and me travel with the legendary beat artist George Herms to visit his good friend Dean Stockwell, the great scene-stealer of film and TV. Dean is also a lifelong, prolific artist. (his work can be seen in the Taos clips) It's a long drive to Taos, and we get to Dean's place in Taos, and damn if it doesn't take us but about three hours before one of us that says something that set's Dean into a rage. Once that gets settled, we broke the ice and he could just torture us with abandon. He rocks! Then I go to George's hideaway in Topanga, and he shows us the magic. He is the real thing, and an international treasure, and I love him.

Venice Swings [from the soundtrack for Venice West & the LA Scene] - Jimmy Z
"I was asked to compose a soundtrack for the documentary Venice West and the LA Scene, which is about rebels from the 50s in the LA and the era of California Beat Era artists and poets. The producers wanted to use the music of Charles Mingus, but the cost of the rights proved to be an obstacle. Having worked with the editor before on another project, they came to me. I absorbed everything I could from an extensive Mingus collection and began to write. The results are nothing even close to the genius of Charles Mingus, but I'm very proud of what the boys and I delivered. Venice Swings is my favorite cut." Alexandra Schwartz is a member of the curatorial department of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has written or edited multiple books on art, including two on Ed Ruscha. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She has worked closely with Ruscha on several projects over the past several years. Ed Ruscha is one of Los Angeles's best known artists. He was born in Nebraska and raised in Oklahoma but belongs to Los Angeles in a way that few other artists do. Since the 1960s, Ruscha's iconic images of the cityscape and culture of Los Angeles—freeway gas stations, parking lots, palm trees, motels, swimming pools, and billboards—have both reflected and shaped popular perceptions of Hollywood and the city that surrounds it. In Ed Ruscha's Los Angeles, Alexandra Schwartz views Ruscha's groundbreaking early work as a window onto the radically shifting cultural and political landscape in which it was produced. Art scholar, Alexandra Schwartz, joins us to discuss her latest book on Ruscha's fascinating career and, of course, his art.
