Healthcare Public Spaces and the Power of Design - Part 1
This movie is intended to explore healthcare public space and is a continuation of a discussion that started in the summer of 2007 at a gathering of more than 150 architects, designers, healthcare consultants and owner representatives at the annual AIA Academy of Architecture for Health, Summer Leadership Conference. At that event we asked: Whats your favorite public space? How do we define healthcare public space? As designers, how might we use public space to create and enhance a positive healthcare experience? To stimulate thinking about the topic in advance of the conference, attendees were asked to create and submit images representing their favorite public space. Among the images submitted some were monumental and well-known sites, some where small, more personal spaces. It was clear that the spaces identified were spaces of a fond memory or experiences full of human emotion, spirit, magic and importance. Given the enthusiasm, interest and energy exhibited at the conference it seemed as if no one had ever asked these questions before we where really on to something. The curiosity for the topic was contagious and we where encouraged to continue our exploration. We had opened the door to a rich and stimulating topic and this movie is the next chapter in refining our original ideas and some suggestions about its practical application to our collective design work. This movie was originally prepared for and presented at the Healthcare Design 09 Conference in Orlando ...

TEDxEMU - Noah Pylvainen - The Lost Art of Public Space
With the rise of the Internet many activities which were once associated with traditional public space are now enjoyed online. However some of the greatest places in the world are public spaces and while older cities thrive from their public spaces, many new cities struggle to create them. This presentation describes what makes good public space why it is still an essential part of our communities. Noah Pylvainen is a senior at EMU graduating this spring with a bachelor's degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a minor in music. After a year abroad in Finland, Noah developed a love for public space and soon found the field of planning. Currently, he is working on several research projects about public space and will be presenting at the Undergrad Symposium and the Michigan Association of Planning Student Conference. Noah is also the Vice President of the urban planning student organization PLACE. Noah also works for EMU Communications as a staff photographer as well as running his own wedding and portrait photography business. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx ...

When are public spaces not public spaces, part1 (24Jan10)
Part 1 of 2: After much talk of photographers being harassed by police and jumped up security guards with nothing else better to do, this item looks into how some places the public use are surprisingly not public, because the b@stard councils have sold them off or a quick buck. James Kunstler: How bad architecture wrecked cities
www.ted.com In James Howard Kunstler's view, public spaces should be inspired centers of civic life and the physical manifestation of the common good. Instead, he argues, what we have in America is a nation of places not worth caring about.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers are invited to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. 50 square meters of the public space
The appropriation of public space with no apparent intent Duration: 54 days (September 04 -- October 27, 2010) Location: Palackeho square, Prague -- the so-called 'Czech Hyde Park' -- allegedly the most liberal spot in the country, approved by the authorities for holding any unannounced public gatherings. Have we grown accustomed to having our living space curbed by just anyone? Is public space a mere myth? In the current society, our living space is defined by legal norms and regulations, the same way as fences demark the choices of our free movement. Only by attempting to cross those boundaries, we learn how limited the space we live in really is -- that we are not as free as it may initially seem. We are getting the sense that the individuality of today is destined to an existence amidst restrictions.

The pleasure of creating public spaces - Richard Meier [video]
Watch inspirational video of Richard Meier talk about things that make architecture so exciting. Visit www.webofstories.com for more inspiring stories and thoughts of Richard Meier. The prominent American architect Richard Meier (b. 1934) is best known for the Getty Centre in Los Angeles, one of his many public projects which broke from his usual style of sleek, white buildings. In all his work -- carried out with characteristic refined style -- he refuses to bend to the trends of modern architecture. He has won many awards including the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, considered the field's highest honour.

Movements in public space
Observing patterns of people's mobility in public spaces and investigating what will happen when their normal walking route is altered and movement is restricted. Three hooded people stand in the main pedestrian access route and cause some congestion, a lot of interesting reactions and catch passerby's attention for a whie!
