The Invasion is a 2007 science fiction thriller film starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, with additional scenes written by the The Wachowskis and directed by James McTeigue.

The Invasion is the fourth film adaptation of the 1955 novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney, following Don Siegel's 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Philip Kaufman's 1978 remake of the same name, and Abel Ferrara's 1993 Body Snatchers.

Plot[link]

After the space shuttle Patriot crashes on Earth, a fungus-like alien lifeform is discovered on the remaining parts scattered over US territory. Once people get in contact with the organism, they are being controlled by it when they enter REM sleep. One of the first people infected is Tucker Kaufman, a CDC director investigating the crash.

Tucker's ex-wife, psychiatrist Carol Bennell, begins to feel something is amiss when people seem to have "changed". Her patient Wendy Lenk describes how her husband "is not her husband", and one of her son's friends acts detached and emotionless. At a neighbourhood kids party, Carol's son Oliver discovers a strange lifeform. The mothers speculate if the organism is in any way connected to the reports of a fast-spreading flu. Carol takes the organism to her doctor friend Ben Driscoll to have it checked. Meanwhile, Tucker uses the CDC to spread the disease further, disguising the spores as flu inoculations.

When Carol drives her son Oliver to his father Tucker, a terrified woman runs through the street screaming "they are coming" and gets hit by a car. The police are uninterested in taking a report from Carol who witnessed the accident. Later at a party of Ben's friend Belicec, Carol has a debate with Russian embassy member Yorish. Yorish argues that given the proper circumstances, any person was capable of any crime or atrocity and that a world without violence would be a world where human beings ceased to be human.

Ben and Dr. Stephen Galeano, a biologist, discover how the spore takes over the brain during REM sleep. They also find that people who had brain affecting illnesses, such as encephalitis or ADEM, are immune to the spore because their previous illnesses prevents the spore from "latching on" to the brain matter. Carol's son, Oliver, is immune to the spore because of the ADEM he had as a young child. Carol decides to get her son, who might show a way to a cure, back from Tucker. Before she drives to Tucker's house, she joins Ben's team who are called to the house of the Belicecs in a case of emergency. There they witness Yorish's transformation.

When Carol arrives at Tucker's house, he and several colleagues close in on her. He explains that the changed humans, devoid of irrational emotions, are offering a better world, and asks her to join them. When Carol resists, he holds her to the ground and infects her by spurting his saliva on her. She escapes and returns to Ben at the Belicecs' house. They flee when Belicec returns with more transformed people intent on infecting anyone in the house. Galeano and one of his assistants head to a base outside Baltimore where they and other scientists attempt to find a cure for the alien virus. Carol and Ben separate to find Oliver, who texts his location, the apartment of Tucker's mother, to Carol.

Carol makes her way to Tucker's mother, pretending to be one of the infected who are now in majority and systematically raiding the cities in search for the few non-infected humans left. Although she loses Ben, she finally manages to free Oliver and seeks refuge in a pharmacy. There she takes an assortment of pills, knowing that she and her son are safe as long as she doesn't fall asleep. She sends a message to Ben to let him know where to find her.

Finally Ben arrives, but Carol realizes that he too has become one of the infected. He tries to seduce her to give in to the new society, but also frankly states that there is no room for people like Oliver who are immune. Carol shoots him in the leg with a pistol she stole earlier from a transforming policeman, and flees with her son. With the infected closing in on them, Galeano picks them up with an army helicopter at the last second. They head back to the base, where scientists use Oliver's blood to create a vaccine.

One year later, most victims of the infection have been cured, having no memory of the events which took place during their illness. Asked by a reporter if he considers the virus to be under control, Galeano replies that a look at the newspaper headlines should be proof enough that humanity acted human again. At her home, Carol helps her son to get ready for school, while Ben, now apparently her partner, reads the morning newspaper. He expresses his dismay about the violence in the world. Carol remembers Yorish's remark that a world without violence would be a world where human beings ceased to be human.

Comparison with other adaptions[link]

• The greatest difference to the novel and earlier filmic versions is the transformation of humans to aliens: instead of substituting the humans with duplicates grown from pods, the alien organism manipulates its victim from within the brain.
• As in the 1978 version, the aliens can be seen in their original shape before they appear in human form.
• Other than the 1993 Body Snatchers, the invaders again appear in a civilian environment as in the first two films. As in the 1978 film, the setting is again an urban one, with Washington D.C. replacing San Francisco.
• As in the novel and the first two films, the main character is named Bennell and working in the medical profession. Here, Bennell is a psychiatrist - and a woman.
• Other names have also been lifted from the novel and the first two films: Driscoll is Bennell's friend and later partner (here a male character named Ben instead of a woman named Becky or Elizabeth). Kaufman is the acquainted scientist/doctor who turns out to be an alien impostor. Although in a different constellation, also the name Belicec for a befriended couple is used.
• The first time Bennell witnesses a transformation is in the house of the Belicecs - in the 1956 and 1978 films, the person in the process of transformation was Jack Belicec, here it is their guest Yorish.
• As in the 1956 and 1993 films, a young boy early on senses that a parent has changed and is not herself or himself anymore.
• As in the 1956 and 1978 versions, Kaufman first tries to seduce Bennell to become "one of them" by praising the advantages of the new society, before he uses force.
• All earlier versions had one main character reveal himself as a human being through an emotional response, here, various secondary characters react emotionally and end up being caught by the aliens.
• Again, the police play a prominent part in the takeover.
• All films show a main or central character trying to stay awake with pharmaceuticals to prevent the transformation.
• Body Snatchers depicted humans being systematically transformed to aliens in an army infirmary. Here, Carol Bennell, in a back room of the pharmacy she hides in, discovers a group of humans in an identical state of transition, obviously victims of a systematic infection.
• As in Body Snatchers, the final words of an off-camera voice questions the victory humanity has achieved.
• Unlike in the original novel, the infectious spores are brought to Earth on debris from a crashed space shuttle, a plot element heavily inspired by the then-recent Columbia disaster.

In March 2004, Warner Bros. hired screenwriter Dave Kajganich to write a script that would serve as a remake of the 1956 science fiction film Invasion of the Body Snatchers.^[3] In July 2005, director Oliver Hirschbiegel was attached to helm the project, with production to begin in Edgemere, MD. ^[4] The following August, Nicole Kidman was cast to star in the film then titled Invasion, receiving a salary of close to $17 million. Invasion was based on the script by Kajganich, originally intended as a remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but Kajganich crafted a different enough story for the studio to see the project as an original conception.^[5] Kajganich described the story to reflect contemporary times, saying, "You just have to look around our world today to see that power inspires nothing more than the desire to retain it and to eliminate anything that threatens it." The screenwriter said that the story was set in Washington, D.C. to reflect the theme.^[6] In August, Daniel Craig was cast opposite Kidman in the lead.^[7] The film, whose original title Invasion of the Body Snatchers was shortened to Invasion due to Kajganich's different concept, was changed once more to The Visiting so it would not be confused with ABC's TV series Invasion.^[8]

Filming began on September 26, 2005 in Baltimore and lasted 45 days.^[9] The film had minimal visual effects, with no need for greenscreen work. Instead, the director shot from odd camera angles and claustrophobic spaces to increase tension in the film.^[10] In October 2006, The Visiting changed to the title of The Invasion, due to the cancellation of ABC's TV series of a similar name.^[11] The studio, however, was unhappy with Hirschbiegel's results and hired the The Wachowskis to rewrite the film and assist with additional shooting.^[1] The studio later hired director James McTeigue to perform re-shoots that would cost $10 million,^[12] an uncredited duty by McTeigue.^[13] After 13 months of inactivity, re-shoots took place in January 2007 to increase action scenes and add a twist ending.^[14] The re-shoot lasted for 17 days in Los Angeles.^[1] During the re-shooting, Kidman was involved in an accident, while in a Jaguar that was being towed by a stunt driver and was taken to a hospital briefly.^[15] Kidman broke several ribs, but she was able to get back to work soon after being hospitalized.^[16]

In May 2007, composer John Ottman recorded the musical score for The Invasion, using heavy synthesizers combined with a 77-piece orchestra intended to create "otherworldly foreboding and tension". The music was also designed to have an avant-garde postmodern style, with atmospheric and thrilling action elements.^[17]

The Invasion was originally intended to be released in June 2006,^[18] but it was postponed to 2007.^[11] The film was released on August 17, 2007 in the United States and Canada in 2,776 theaters. The film grossed $5,951,409 over the opening weekend. The Invasion has grossed $15,074,191 in the United States and Canada and $24,727,542 in other territories for a worldwide gross of $40,170,558 as of March 9, 2008.^[19]. With the film's production being $65 million but the total gross being only $40 million, the film was a failure.

The music in the trailer is called "Untitled 8 (a.k.a. "Popplagið")" by Sigur Rós.

The film received mixed to negative reviews. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, The Invasion rates 20%.^[20] On review aggregator Metacritic, The Invasion received an average score of 45 out of 100.^[21]

According to Peter Turchin (Historical dynamics. Princeton: PUP, 2003), he made a significant contribution to the development of cliodynamics. He is an author or editor of 9 books and nearly 100 research articles.

He is currently a professor in the School of Public Policy at George Mason University. He has also worked as a consultant of the US government, for example, serving as chair of the National Research Council's evaluation of USAID Democracy Assistance Programs.^[1]

Teofilo F. Ruiz (born 1943) is a Cuban-American medieval historian and professor, currently at UCLA.

Early life[link]

Born in Cuba, Ruiz was active during the Cuban Revolution. At age of 17, he fought against the regime of Fulgencio Batista. When his friend was killed in 1960, he resigned from the revolution and was immediately imprisoned. Ruiz was eventually released after the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion (1961) in order to make room for new prisoners of war.

In 1961, Ruiz left Cuba for Miami with "only three changes of clothing, $45, a box of Cuban cigars to sell and a Spanish translation of Jacob Burckhardt's A History of Greek Civilization." By 1962, Ruiz and two cousins moved from Miami to New York City. He worked at various jobs including as a taxi driver for one year. Despite many obstacles, Ruiz finished his dissertation in the Graduate School of Princeton University by 1974.

Professional background[link]

Ruiz was a student of American medievalist Joseph R. Strayer and received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1974. He has taught at Brooklyn College, the CUNY Graduate Center, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and Princeton University—as 250th Anniversary Visiting Professor for Distinguished Teaching—before going to UCLA in July 1998. In 1994 he was selected by the Carnegie Foundation as one of the four Outstanding Teachers of the Year in the United States. He served as chair of the UCLA Department of History from 2002-2005. He has lectured in the USA, Spain, Italy, France, England, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.

In 2007, Ruiz was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for his project on festivals, rituals, and power in late medieval and early modern Spain.

In 2008, Ruiz was named chair of the UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

On February 13, 2012 President Barack Obama awarded Ruiz the 2011 National Humanities Medal at the White House.

He has published many books as well as dozens of articles in scholarly journals as well as reviews and smaller articles.

Ricard "Ricky" Rubio i Vives (born October 21, 1990) is a Spanish professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Rubio became the youngest player ever to play in the Spanish ACB League on October 15, 2005, at age 14.^[1][2] He made his Euroleague debut on October 24, 2006, at age 16, becoming the first player born in the 1990s to play in a Euroleague game.^[3] On June 25, 2009, he was drafted with the fifth pick in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Timberwolves,^[4] making him the first player born in the 1990s to be drafted by the NBA. The Timberwolves had an agreement in principle with his former Spanish team, DKV Joventut, to buy out his contract, but Rubio backed out of the deal.^[5] On August 31, 2009, Joventut traded the rights to Rubio to FC Barcelona,^[6] and Rubio signed a six-year contract with FC Barcelona the following day.^[7] On May 31, 2011, Rubio reached an agreement with Minnesota to join the Timberwolves for the 2011–12 NBA season.^[8]

2009 NBA Draft[link]

On June 24, 2009, the Minnesota Timberwolves acquired the 5th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Etan Thomas, Darius Songaila and Oleksiy Pecherov from the Washington Wizards, in exchange for Randy Foye and Mike Miller.^[11] With the 5th pick, Minnesota selected Rubio, making him the first player born in the 1990s to be drafted.^[12] The Timberwolves had a total of four first round picks in the 2009 NBA Draft. They used the 6th and 18th picks in the first round and chose two other point guards, Jonny Flynn from Syracuse and Ty Lawson from North Carolina, surprising many in the NBA.^[13][14] Lawson's draft rights were soon traded to the Denver Nuggets.^[14] The Timberwolves then used the 28th pick to select Wayne Ellington, a shooting guard from North Carolina.

The following day, Rubio's father told a Spanish media outlet that his son may return to Spain for at least one more season.^[13] Rubio did not attend an introductory press conference by the Timberwolves.^[15] Rubio had a buyout clause in his Joventut contract reported by various media outlets as ranging from $6.6 million to $8.2 million, and Timberwolves general manager David Kahn admitted that Rubio may have to play one more season in Spain to reduce or avoid the buyout.^[15]

After the draft[link]

On July 22, the Associated Press reported that Rubio was seeking to leave Joventut, regardless of whether he was able to come to the NBA. The report indicated that ACB powers FC Barcelona and Real Madrid were both interested in signing Rubio if he could not immediately come to the NBA. The main stumbling block to Rubio's NBA move was a clause in the league's collective bargaining agreement that prohibits a team from paying more than $500,000 toward a player's contract buyout. Barça and Real, as ACB clubs, are not subject to this rule and could pay far more toward a buyout.^[16] In another development, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported on August 4 that Rubio's representatives had been actively seeking endorsement deals in Minnesota to help finance his buyout (the NBA buyout rules are binding on teams, but not on third parties).^[17]

However, on August 31, 2009, ESPN reported that Rubio would not come to the NBA until 2011 at the earliest.^[6] Joventut expressed a willingness to reduce the buyout, and the Timberwolves apparently had a deal to bring him to the NBA, but in the end Rubio did not feel ready to come across the Atlantic. Rubio issued the following statement:^[5]

Kahn believed that Rubio and his family were being pressured by the Spanish media, his national teammates, and people in his hometown to stay in Spain, adding, "It's just been a tough summer. From an 18-year-old's perspective and his family's perspective, it was very nerve-racking."^[5]

ESPN reported that his original buyout with Joventut was €5.7 million ($8.1 million) in both 2009 and 2010.^[6] Barça bought out Rubio's contract for €3.5 million ($5.0 million), and announced on September 1 that he had signed a six-year deal with the club. The contract gave him the option to go to the NBA after the 2010–11 season,^[18] with ESPN reporting that the buyout at that time would be a more manageable $1.4 million (of which the Timberwolves could pay $500,000).^[5]

Rubio debuted in the Spanish ACB League in the 2005-06 season with DKV Joventut. He won the EuroChallenge championship with Joventut that year. He led the Spanish ACB League in steals during the 2006-07 season. He also won the Spanish ACB League's Rising Star Award that season. Rubio was also named the 2007, 2008, and 2009 FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year.^[19] He made his Euroleague debut on October 24, 2006, versus Panathinaikos of Athens as Joventut's backup point guard for Elmer Bennett. Rubio averaged 2.8 assists per game in his first season of Euroleague play. He won the Eurocup championship with Joventut in 2008. He was also voted the Spanish ACB League's best point guard in 2008 and 2010. He won the Euroleague 2009-2010 with FC Barcelona.

Despite his notability, he was carefully shielded. DKV Joventut and Rubio's parents agreed not to make him available for interviews until his 18th birthday on 21 October 2008.^[20] However, the restrictions were ended a few months early once he was selected for the Spanish national team that would play at the 2008 Olympics.^[21]

Rubio won the 2008 Mr. Europa Award, which is given out yearly by the Italian Superbasket Magazine. In 2009, his club Badalona raised the amount of money that his contract paid per year from 80,000 euros net income to 300,000 euros net income.^[22] He was named the Defensive Player of the Year for the Spanish ACB League 2008-09 season, and he also led the league in steals that season. Rubio declared himself eligible for the 2009 NBA Draft on April 20, 2009.^[23][24] Rubio's agent is Dan Fegan.^[25]

Minnesota Timberwolves (2011–present)[link]

On June 1, 2011, sources reported that Rubio had "reached an agreement with Minnesota to join the Timberwolves" for the 2011–12 NBA season.^[8] Rubio arrived off a plane in Minnesota to a barrage of fans waiting to welcome him to America.^[26][27] On June 17, 2011, Rubio held a press conference announcing that he had signed with Minnesota.^[28]

Becoming the 10th Spanish NBA player,^[29] Rubio made his regular season debut on December 26, 2011, to a sellout crowd at Target Center, the team's first sellout crowd since the 2007-08 season. Rubio recorded 6 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists in 26 minutes a 4-point loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.^[30] He was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month after the first month of the season.^[31] In February, Rubio and teammate Derrick Williams were selected to participate in the 2012 Rising Stars challenge. However, Rubio was drafted to Team Shaq, while Williams was drafted to Team Chuck. Rubio scored a career high 22 points on February 19, 2012 in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers.^[32] In a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on March 9, 2012, Rubio tore his ACL and his lateral collateral ligament after colliding into Kobe Bryant. He missed the rest of the season.^[33][34] Rubio finished second in Rookie of the Year voting, trailing only Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Kyrie Irving^[35] Rubio had averaged 10.6 points, 8.2 assists and 2.2 steals in 41 games.

In August 2006, Rubio led the rising junior Spanish national team to the FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. During the tournament Rubio achieved two triple-doubles and a quadruple-double. In the 110–106 double overtime finale victory over Russia, Rubio scored 51 points, the first player to do so in FIBA tournaments since Luol Deng (in 2001), grabbed 24 rebounds, made 12 assists, and stole the ball 7 times—a performance unprecedented in the tournament's history. He also forced the first overtime with a three-point, buzzer-beating shot from mid-court. Rubio was subsequently named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after leading it in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

Senior national team[link]

The young Spaniard was selected to take part in the Spanish National Team which participated at the 2008 Olympics Basketball Tournament in Beijing, China. The team was composed of current and former NBA players such as Pau Gasol, José Calderón, Rudy Fernández, Marc Gasol, Raúl López, Jorge Garbajosa, and Juan Carlos Navarro, among others.

He played in the 2008 Olympics Basketball Tournament's gold medal game against the USA's "Redeem Team", and thus at 17 became the youngest basketball player to ever play in an Olympic basketball final. Rubio shared the Spanish national team's silver medal after his team suffered a 118–107 loss. The next year he was chosen to play for Spain at the EuroBasket 2009 in Poland, where Spain won the gold medal by defeating Serbia 85–63. During the tournament, Rubio averaged 22.7 minutes, 5.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Doug McAdam

Doug McAdam (Ph.D. 1979) is Professor of Sociology at Stanford University. He is the author or co-author of over a dozen books and over fifty articles, and is widely credited as one of the pioneers of the political process model in social movement analysis.^{[citation needed]} He wrote one of the first books on the theory in 1982 when analyzing the U.S. civil rights movement: Political Process and the Development of the Black Insurgency 1930-1970. His other book Freedom Summer won the C. Wright Mills Award in 1990. He served as the director of the prestigious Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences between 2001 and 2005. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
