Oral History: Billy Brooks, 1960s Chicago Black Panther
Oral History: Billy Brooks, 1960s Chicago Black Panther
This 43-minute video was made on the patio of Chicago's landmark Heartland Café in Rogers Park. The 65-year old Billy Lamar Brooks, Sr. reviews his life growing up in Chicago. The son of a Christian preacher, Brooks remarks on his life seeking fairness and respect for African-Americans. One of the founders of the breakfast for children program (started by the Black Panther Party and later adopted in government schools), Brooks distinguishes between US Constitutional rights and universal human rights, as he recounts state police brutality and racism. He also tells of those who inspired him, including the Jewish-American founder of the Better Boys Foundation of the Lawndale neighborhood.- published: 05 Oct 2013
