www.euronews.com At a Christmas mass in Soweto, church-goers prayed for former South African president Nelson Mandel's speedy recovery. The 94-year-old has been in hospital in the capital Pretoria for the past two weeks being treated for a lung infection and gallstones. "The message I would give to him is must just feel well, we love him and that's all," said church-goer Thenjiwe Makhub. Another local resident Thabiso Kekana said: "I really hoping Madiba (Mandela) a speedy recovery and Merry Christmas. I hope to see him next year hopefully." Current President Jacob Zuma made a personal visit to Mandela's bedside on Christmas morning. He said the Nobel peace laureate is feeling much better and that doctors are happy with his progress. No date has been given for Mandela's release from hospital. The anti-apartheid hero retired from public life in 2004 after serving one term as South Africa's first black president. www.euronews.com Japan's lower house of Parliament has approved Shinzo Abe as Prime Minister, the second time the hawkish lawmaker has been in the top job. Abe's Liberal Democratic Party surges back to power three years after a crushing defeat which came after more than 50-years of non-stop rule. Now that the 58-year-old has taken the reins once more he must try to steer his country out of deflation and confront a rising China. The grandson of a former prime minister has promised aggressive monetary easing by the Bank of Japan and big fiscal spending to slay deflation and weaken the yen making Japanese exports more competitive. Abe resigned as Prime Minister five years ago after a one year term that was troubled by scandals in his cabinet as well as public outrage over lost pension records. A Myanmar plane carrying 65 passengers including foreign tourists crash-landed in eastern Shan state on Tuesday, leaving two people dead and 11 others injured, the airline and officials said. Air Bagan said the aircraft, an ageing Fokker-100, was forced to make an emergency landing two miles (three kilometres) from Heho airport, which is the gateway to the popular tourist destination of Inle Lake. "One passenger who was missing was found dead inside the plane. We are still trying to identify who the dead passenger is," the carrier announced in a statement posted on its Facebook page. The victim was an 11-year-old child, according to the information ministry, which added that four foreigners were among those hurt in the accident. Another person was killed when the plane struck a motorbike on a road near the airport, it said. The exact circumstances of the incident were not immediately clear, but a government official said a fire was reported in one of the engines as it approached Heho airport at around 9 am (0230 GMT). "Because of the emergency landing near the airport, the plane broke up in the middle," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that passengers were evacuated. A local tour guide waiting at the airport for passengers on the Air Bagan flight to arrive said the fire had "burnt almost the whole plane". Air Bagan spokesman Ye Min Oo said the two pilots among the injured were taken to hospital, although their condition was not immediately known ...
