Oxfordi/ˈɒksfəd/ is a city in central southern England, the home of the University of Oxford. The city is the county town of Oxfordshire, and forms a district within the county. It has a population of just under 165,000, of whom 153,900 live within the district boundary. It lies about 50 miles (80 km) north-west of London. The rivers Cherwell and Thames (also sometimes known as the Isis locally) run through Oxford and meet south of the city centre.
Oxford has a diverse economic base. Its industries include motor manufacturing, education, publishing and a large number of information technology and science-based businesses.
Buildings in Oxford demonstrate an example of every English architectural period since the arrival of the Saxons, including the iconic, mid-18th century Radcliffe Camera. Oxford is known as the "city of dreaming spires", a term coined by poet Matthew Arnold in reference to the harmonious architecture of Oxford's university buildings. The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
McGrath was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and grew up in Downpatrick, County Down, where he attended Down High School. In September 1966 he became a pupil at the Methodist College Belfast, where his studies focused on mathematics, physics and chemistry. He went up to Wadham College, Oxford in 1971 and gained first class honours in chemistry in 1975. He began research in molecular biophysics in the Oxford University Department of Biochemistry under the supervision of Professor Sir George Radda, FRS and was elected to an E.P.A. Cephalosporin Research Studentship at Linacre College, Oxford, for the academic year 1975-6, and to a Domus Senior Scholarship at Merton College, Oxford, for the period 1976-8. During these three years, he carried out scientific research while studying for the Oxford University Final Honour School of Theology. He was awarded an Oxford D.Phil. for his research in molecular biophysics (December 1977), and gained first class honours in Theology in June 1978.

Thirty-nine colleges make up the university, their elegant honey-coloured buildings wrapping around winding cobbled streets and attracting hoards of tourists each year. Yet despite the rushing traffic and throngs of people,

The 8 HOURS IN series will be a collection of 'stay-cay-days' in the UK. Whilst saving to go travelling around the USA, I preoccupied my wanderlust by touring the UK on a budget. I've now developed a bit of a taste for it - so expect to see a lot a more of these in the future.
Apologies for the ropey quality towards the end!

The city of Oxford is home to some 150,000 residents and a famous seat of learning, the oldest English-speaking university in the world. Although the exact date of its founding isn't known, it is said that local priests and monks were first taught in monastery schools in the area in the eleventh century.

Oxford Motorcycle Covers Buying Guide http://www.revzilla.com/oxford-covers?utm_source=youtube.com&utm;_medium=description&utm;_campaign=Oxford_Motorcycle_Covers_Buying_Guide Rainy days come and rainy days go, but motorcycles are forever. Well, maybe not forever, but we do want them to last for as long as possible and remain in tip-top shape all the while. Not everyone has the luxury of a garage or storage area to keep their two-wheeled machines covered from the climatic conditions often thrown their way by Mother Nature. Even if you do have a garage, it is often still ideal to cover the bike anyway to keep UV rays, dust, and other grime from cluttering up your bike’s natural luster. No matter the make, model, year, or configuration of your bike, Oxford has you covered.

Oxford Travel Video, conservative, closeted and elite, Oxford is a privileged place, highly aware of its international standing as one of the world's most famous university towns and yet remarkably restrained for a city driven by its student population. It's the kind of place where the pursuit of excellence, the weight of academic achievement and the whiff of intellectual ideals is palpable as soon as you get off the bus.
Thirty-nine colleges make up the university, their elegant honey-coloured buildings wrapping around winding cobbled streets and attracting hoards of tourists each year. Yet despite the rushing traffic and throngs of people, inside their jealously guarded quadrangles an aura of studious calm descends. The oldest colleges date back almost 750 years and little has changed inside the hallowed walls since then. The archaic traditions, customs and dress codes live on and the architecture remains largely untouched, allowing visitors to experience the colleges as countless prime ministers, poets, writers and scientists have done.

My name’s Eleri and I’m studying for a Master’s in Women’s Studies at Wadham College, University of Oxford. I’ve been very lucky to have been offered a place to stay at Oxford to study for a PhD in English Literature starting in October 2015.
I have paid my way through my Master’s by working two part-time jobs supplemented by two scholarships awarded for academic excellence. However, as you might be aware, there have been huge cuts to arts and humanities funding in the U.K. This means that research councils (that fund students) just don’t have nearly enough money to go around. 52% PhD students are

52% PhD students are currently faced with the horrifying prospect of having to self-fund three years of study. As a result there has been a drop of around 50,000 in the number of postgraduates at UK universities since the recession. I have unfortunately found myself in this terrifying position, faced with self-funding my three-year PhD.
I’m asking you to please consider investing in my research and potential by donating whatever you can towards my PhD.

Alan Turing (1912-1954) was the founder of modern computer science and the chief scientific cryptographer of the Second World War.
Andrew Hodges, PhD, is the author of "Alan Turing: The Enigma," upon which the Academy Award-winning (Adapted Screenplay) "The Imitation Game," is based. Hodges offers the words of Walt Whitman referenced in his biography of Turing as a preview for this lecture: "One's-self I sing—a simple, separate Person; / Yet utter the word Democratic, the word En-masse."
In this talk, Hodges—Senior Research Fellow and Tutor in Mathematics at Wadham College, University of Oxford— described some of the achieve

Quantum measurement, as described in standard theory however, requires a fundamental indeterminism, and issues such as Bell non-locality cause basic difficulties with a picture of objective reality that is consistent with the principles of relativity. Accordingly, many philosophers of science have felt driven to viewpoints according to which “reality” itself takes on subjective qualities, seemingly dependent upon the experiences of conscious beings.
My own position is an essentially opposite one, and I argue that conscious experience itself arises from a particular objective feature of physical law. This, however, must go beyond our current understanding of the laws of quantum processes and their relation to macroscopic phenomena. I argue that this objective feature has to do with implications of Einstein’s general theory of relativity and, moreover, must lie beyond the scope of a fully computational universe.
SIR ROGER PENROSE OM FRS is a renowned mathematical physicist, mathematician and philosopher of science. He is the Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford, as well as an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College. He is known for his work in mathematical physics, especially his contributions to general relativity and cosmology. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics, which he shared with Stephen Hawking for their contribution to our understanding of the Universe. In 1972 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1972. He was knighted for services to science in 1994 and appointed to the Order of Merit in 2000. He also holds honorary doctorate degrees from many distinguished universities including Warsaw, Leuven, York and Bath.

Introduced by Ken Macdonald QC, Marcus du Sautoy describes the empowerment that comes from understanding science and the importance of communicating science beyond the realms of academia. This event, organised by Wadham College, University of Oxford took place at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, October 2014. The Invention of Modern Science event marked the anniversary of 400 years since the birth of experimental scientist John Wilkins who was Warden of Wadham College in the 1650s. His experimental club, which included Robert Boyle, Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke, met at Wadham College and its members went on to form the nucleus of the Royal Society. “We have a lot to thank John Wilkins for…he was a founding member of the Royal Society London”, said Sir Paul Nurse, President of the Royal Society, speaking at The Invention of Modern Science event organised by Wadham College, University of Oxford. Curiosity, respect for evidence and humour were all evident in Wilkins’s character – characteristics necessary for science, he continued. Sir Paul Nurse was speaking alongside Marcus du Sautoy, Jo Dunkley and Melvyn Bragg at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, October 2014. The introduction of quantum mechanics in the early 20th Century led many physicists to question the “Newtonian” type of picture of an objective deterministic physical reality that had been previously regarded as an essential background to a fully scientific picture of the world.
