Brett Hulsey (born April 28, 1959) is a Wisconsin consultant and Democratic politician and legislator.

Hulsey earned a B.A. in political economy from Middlebury College in 1982, and an M.S. in natural science from the University of Oklahoma in 1988. He is the owner of an energy and environmental consulting firm. He has served as a Dane County supervisor since 1998.^[1]

As of 2010 he had been married to Mary Kay for 17 years; they have one son (Tyler) and one daughter (Lea).^[2]

Legislative career[link]

Hulsey was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly's 77th district in 2010 to succeed fellow Democrat Spencer Black, receiving a plurality of 12,138 votes to 7,761 for Green Ben Manski, 4,666 for Republican David Redick, and 372 for David Olson of the Constitution Party.^[3][4] This was one of only two races in the state where, in an election contested by both major parties, the first and second places were not taken by a Republican and a Democrat.^[5] The other was the 25th Assembly district, where the former Democratic incumbent successfully ran as an independent against candidates from both major parties.^[6]

Chris Solinsky (born December 5, 1984) is an American distance runner. Among his more notable achievements, he won eight state championships in high school and five NCAA Division I championships at the University of Wisconsin. He is the former American 10,000 meters record holder with a time of 26:59.60 as well as the first non-African to break the 27-minute barrier in the 10,000 m. He is currently a professional runner for Nike, Oregon Track Club Elite and KIMbia Athletics.

Early life and high school[link]

Solinsky was born in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and he attended high school at Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH). Solinsky dominated the competition after his freshman year, winning the state cross country title three times. He won 11 state medals, eight state titles, led the nation in time on six different occasions, and earned four 1st Team All-American awards. He broke Wisconsin high school state records in the indoor 1600 m, the indoor 2-mile, and the outdoor 3200 m. He also broke state meet records in cross country and the outdoor 3200 m. His winning time of 14:41 at the 2002 Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships gave him a 21-second winning margin,^[1] the largest margin of victory in the history of the meet. He finished his high school career with personal records of 4:03.80 (1600 m) and 8:43.24 (3200 m).

Solinsky chose the University of Wisconsin–Madison after graduating from high school in the spring of 2003. There, training under coach Jerry Schumacher, he continued to improve as a national-class runner. The Badgers were undefeated in Big Ten championships during Solinsky's career, sweeping the 2003-2007 cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field titles. Wisconsin also won two NCAA team titles during those years (2005 cross country, 2007 indoor track and field), and finished as national runner-up three times (cross country 2003, 2004, 2006). As an individual, Solinsky earned four Big Ten individual titles, 14 All American accolades, and five individual national titles (2005 and 2006 indoor 3000 m, 2007 indoor 5000 m, 2006 and 2007 outdoor 5000 m).^[2] He also formerly held the Wisconsin school record in the indoor 3000 m and currently holds the record in the outdoor mile.

At the Badger Twilight Meet on May 6 (52 years to the day after Roger Bannister broke the barrier for the first time), Solinsky and four other athletes ran a 1-mile race at the Dan McClimon track. Former Badger Matt Tegenkamp finished first in 3:56.58 and Solinsky finished second in 3:57.80, both becoming the first to dip under four minutes on Wisconsin soil.

Solinsky graduated from Wisconsin in December 2007 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in history and sociology.

Professional[link]

Following the completion of his collegiate career, Solinsky signed a contract with Nike and KIMbia Athletics. Until January 2009, he continued to live and train in Madison, Wisconsin under coach Schumacher. Since then, Schumacher and his athletes have moved to Portland, Oregon and have become part of the Oregon Track club. Matt Tegenkamp continues to be his training partner. Solinsky failed to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in the 5000 meter run, leading most of the Olympic Trials' last 1000 m but faltering down the final stretch.

Solinsky qualified for the 2009 World Championships in Berlin with a second place finish at the U.S. Championship. At the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Solinsky finished in 12th place with a time of 13:25.87.

On May 1, 2010, Solinsky debuted in the 10,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford University, setting the American Record in the process by fourteen seconds (bettering Meb Keflezighi's 2001 mark of 27:13.98) to run 26:59.60.^[3] The mark also surpasses Arturo Barrios's North American area record of 27:08.23. He is the first non-African to break the 27-minute barrier for the 10000 meters.^[4] The 6'1", 160-pound Solinsky is also the first man over 6 feet and over 141 pounds to break the 27-minute barrier.^[5]

On June 4, 2010, Solinsky improved his personal best in the 5000 meters, breaking the 13 minute barrier by running 12:56.66 at the Bislett Games. The mark was just .39 behind the standing American and North American record held by Dathan Ritzenhein, however Bernard Lagat improved upon both records by running 12:54.12 in the same race.^[6]

Matthew Tegenkamp (born January 19, 1982) is a professional distance runner from Lee's Summit, Missouri. He is the American two-mile record holder, with a time of 8:07.07, set at the Prefontaine Classic in 2007.^[1]

He also holds a 5,000 meter PR of 12:58.56, which makes him the fourth fastest American all-time at the distance,^[2] and a 1,500 meter PR of 3:34.25.^{[citation needed]} Tegenkamp's mile best is 3:56.38, which he achieved while becoming the first person to break four minutes in the mile on Wisconsin soil.^[3] He is currently a professional runner for Nike and KIMbia Athletics.

After being part of the state championship team as a sophomore, Matt showed steady improvement throughout his early career. As a senior he set a Missouri state cross country course record (15:26.7) on the Oak Hills course. He gained national recognition his senior year at Lee's Summit High School when he placed second in the Midwest Regional for cross country and fifth at the Footlocker National Cross Country Championships. During his senior track campaign, Tegenkamp ran an 8:57.23 3200m and a 4:11.43 1600m to win both events at the Missouri state championships, leading his team to the state title.

Tegenkamp attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, along with high school rivals Tim Keller and Josh Spiker. After redshirting his freshman season, he defeated two-time high school national champion Dathan Ritzenhein at the U.S. Junior Cross Country championships, handing Ritzenhein his first cross country defeat in several years. Tegenkamp then placed fifth at the World Junior Cross Country Championships, behind Ritzenhein and future world record holder, Kenenisa Bekele.

Tegenkamp soon began to struggle with injuries that hindered him until Wisconsin coach, Jerry Schumacher, changed his training regimen. He responded quickly, lowering his 5000m PR to 13:30.90 in 2004.^[4] Tegenkamp graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2005 with a bachelor of science degree in human ecology.

Professional[link]

Following graduation, Tegenkamp stayed in Madison to train as a professional under Schumacher. In 2006, he set personal bests at 1,500 meters (3:35.96), 3,000 meters (7:34.98) and the two-mile (8:16.50). Tegenkamp also ended his 2006 season by getting a bronze medal at the 2006 IAAF World Cup in Athletics, with a time of 13:36.83.

In 2007, he won the USA Indoor National 3k with a time of 7:46.08.^[5] Then, he set a personal and American record in the two-mile run at the Prefontaine Classic with a time of 8:07.07, breaking the existing record set by Alan Webb by more than 4 seconds.^[1]<^[2]

Tegenkamp also finished second behind Bernard Lagat in the 5,000m at the 2007 U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which earned him the right to compete at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka.^[6] At the 2007 IAAF world championships Matt finished fourth in the 5,000m event, missing out on the bronze medal by .03 second, with a time of 13:46.78 to Moses Ndiema Kipsiro of Uganda's 13:46.75.

At the 2008 United States Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Oregon, Tegenkamp finished second to Lagat in the 5,000-meter run with a time 13:29.68^[7] to earn his first trip to the Olympic games.^[8]

In 2008, Matt and wife Michelle Carson, and Matt's coach moved to Portland, Oregon for Nike's Oregon Project.

In 2009 Tegenkamp became one of only 6 non-African runners to break the 13 minute barrier in the 5000 meters with his PR of 12:58.56.^[9]

Tegenkamp was once quoted saying, "I will never run a 10k," though he later retracted this statement and made his track 10,000 meter début on May 1, 2011 at the Payton Jordan Invitational, running 27:28:64.^[10]

Montee Ball, Jr. (born December 5, 1990)^[2] is an American football running back for the Wisconsin Badgers.

Early years[link]

Ball was born in Wentzville, Missouri. He attended Timberland High School in Wentzville, and played high school football for the Timberland Wolves. He was ranked as the number 33 running back in the nation and fourth-best player in Missouri by Rivals.com. He was named first-team all-state, all-metro, all-district and all-conference as a senior. As a senior, Ball carried the ball 213 times for 2,187 yards and 41 touchdowns. As a junior, Ball was named player of the year (St. Louis American), first-team all-state, all-metro, all-district and all-conference after putting up 358 carries for 3,077 yards and 32 touchdowns. Appeared in the Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd". As a sophomore, Ball was named first-team all-district and all-conference after carrying the ball 297 times for 1,845 yards and 15 touchdowns. As a freshman, Ball had 1,113 yards on 127 carries with 19 touchdowns. Ball was a team captain and team MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior. He holds the Wentzville school district rushing records with career totals of 995 carries, 8,222 yards, 107 touchdowns and an average of 8.26 yards per carry. Ball was also named to the all-academic list three times and was a two-time letterwinner in basketball.

2009[link]

As a freshman, Ball played in 9 of the 13 games and finished second on the team in rushing yards (391), rushing touchdowns (4) and rushing attempts (98).

2010[link]

Ball played in 12 games including starts in the final four games. Ball began the 2010 season as the backup running back to John Clay, the 2009 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Clay was somewhat limited in 2010 as he nursed offseason ankle surgery and later an MCL injury, so Ball gained a prominent role in the Badgers offense, along with freshman back James White. Ball led the team in rushing touchdowns, ranked second in rushing attempts and scoring, third in rushing yards and all purpouse yards and fourth in total offense. His 18 rushing touchdowns are tied for fourth-most in a single season and his 6.11 yards per carry is sixth-best in one season at UW. Ball also scored 108 points on the season which ties for sixth-most UW annuals. At the end of the season, Ball was named consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten.

2011[link]

Ball played and started in all 14 games. On October 15, 2011, Ball was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after throwing a 25-yard TD pass and scoring three rushing touchdowns with 142 yards rushing, including a career long 54-yard rush, on 14 carries and 46 yards receiving on one catch against Indiana.

On November 5, 2011, Ball was named Big Ten Player of the Week after rushing for a career high 223 yards against the Purdue Boilermakers. During that game, Ball scored four touchdowns (three rushing and one receiving) which gave him 146 total points scored on the season. This broke Brian Calhoun's school record for total points in a single season of 144.

On November 12, 2011, Ball broke the single season Big Ten Conference record for touchdowns by rushing for two and receiving one against the Minnesota. Ball had 27 touchdowns (23 rushing and 4 receiving) at the end of that game. The previous record of 26 was held by Ohio State's Pete Johnson (1975), Indiana's Anthony Thompson (1988) and Penn State's Ki-Jana Carter (1994).

On November 19, 2011, against Illinois, Ball ran for a career high 224 yards and two touchdowns on a career high 38 carries. He also added a receiving TD and became just the fifth player in NCAA Division I FBS history to score 30 touchdowns in a single season.

On November 26, 2011, Ball scored four touchdowns against Penn State, and four more in the Big Ten Championship game one week later giving Ball 38 total touchdowns on the season which is 2nd all-time in FBS. He trails Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders who scored 39 touchdowns in 1988.

Ball was one of three finalists for the 2011 Doak Walker Award joining Oregon's LaMichael James and Alabama's Trent Richardson. The award was given to Alabama's Trent Richardson.

Ball was named First Team All-Big Ten, by both the coaches and media, at the conclusion of the 2011 regular season. Ball was also the winner of two other Big Ten awards. The Graham-George Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year award which was renamed in 2011 after of Northwestern's Otto Graham and Ohio State's Eddie George and the Ameche-Dayne Big Ten Running Back of the Year award which was also renamed in 2011 after Wisconsin's Alan Ameche and Ron Dayne.^[3]

On December 5, 2011, Ball was named one of five finalists for the Heisman Trophy. He is joined by Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu and Alabama running back Trent Richardson.^[4] On the same day, Ball was named All-American by AFCA joining teammates Peter Konz and Kevin Zeitler.^[5] Ball was also named All-American by CBS again joined by teammate Peter Konz.

On December 8, 2011, Ball was named First Team All-American by Yahoo Sports. Ball's teammates Peter Konz and Kevin Zeitler were named to the Second Team and quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Chris Borland was named to the Third Team.^[6]

On December 10, 2011, Ball was one of five finalists invited to New York City for the presentation of the Heisman Trophy. He finished fourth in the voting with 348 points (22-1st place, 83-2nd place and 116-3rd place points). Ball's fourth place finish was the highest in Wisconsin history for a non-winner of the award. Ball was joined by teammate Russell Wilson who also received votes, Wilson finished ninth with 52 points. Baylor's Robert Griffin III won the award.^[7]

On January 2, 2012, Ball scored his 39th touchdown of the season tying him with Barry Sanders for most touchdowns in a single FBS season.

On January 5, 2012, Ball announced he would return for his senior year with the UW Badgers rather than entering the 2012 NFL Draft.
