A New Waterfront City is Coming into View
A new waterfront city is coming into view, thanks to the transformational flood protection work in the Port Lands. With the removal of “north plug”, the new Don River can flow freely into Lake Ontario and a new island is born. This historic feat of engineering is made possible through tri-government collaboration. Flood protection is the catalyst to revitalize the eastern waterfront, an area that will be home to over 100,000 people and a destination for 97,000 jobs. Next year, we will open the biggest Toronto park in a generation. Learn more about how this innovative project unlocks a new waterfront city in this video.

Pulling the Plug: How we’ll reconnect the Don River to the Lake
In February 2024, we flooded the new river that we built in the Port Lands. Over the summer, we removed the ‘west plug’, which separated the new part of the river from the Lake. Now, we’re starting to remove the North Plug, which will allow the existing Don River to flow through the new river valley. This work will take a little while, and a lot of it will happen underwater. Don Forbes is here to explain how it’s done.

How Russian servicemen are ferrying equipment across the Don River
With the help of the state-of-the-art PP-2005M pontoon-bridge, the servicemen managed to bridge 400m of heavy equipment across the riverbank in just one hour. The PTS-2 floating transporter was also used to transfer personnel and equipment. The main forces of motorized rifle and tank units were transferred to the opposite bank on BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, APC-82A and T-90 tanks.

Don river
Why do they call the Don “quiet”?
For its slow current – the channel slope is less than 1% over the entire length of the river.
The ancient Greeks called the Don – Tanais, the historian Herodotus believed that the local steppes were home to the Amazon.
Once upon a time, the Middle and Lower Don were part of the Wild Field, the sparsely populated areas through which nomadic raids took place.
Peasants and landowners fled to the borderland from the Russian principalities to escape serfdom.
They called themselves “Cossacks,” which means free men, the bravehearts.
They lived by fishing and hunting, robbing merchant caravans and neighboring lands, or being recruited for military service.
With strengthening and growth of the Moscow kingdom, the Don outlaw life came to an end.
