Garnier (French pronunciation: [ɡaʁnje]) is a mass market cosmetics brand of L'Oréal that produces hair care and skin care products. The company started as Laboratoires Garnier in 1906, and was acquired by L'Oréal in the 1970s.^[1] Current product lines include Fructis shampoos and conditioners, and Nutrisse hair color.^[2] Garnier is sold in numerous countries wordwide, with specific product lines targeted for different skin types and cultures.^[3][4] In 2011, Garnier partnered with TerraCycle to promote upcycling of product containers and the introduction of biodegradable products.^[5][6]

Laurent Garnier (also known as Choice), (born 1 February 1966, Boulogne-sur-Seine, France) is a French techno music producer and DJ. Garnier began DJ-ing in Manchester during the late 1980s. By the following decade, he had a broad stylistic range, able to span deep house, Detroit techno, trance and jazz. He added production work to his schedule in the early 1990s, and recorded several albums.

Early influences[link]

During the late 1970s, Garnier discovered clubbing with his brother in Paris, where his family lived. He loved disco but also listened to all other contemporary musical genres including reggae, funk, and punk. At the age of 16, Garnier had started recording and mixing music on tape recorders.

In 1984, Garnier started working as a waiter for the French Embassy in London.^[1] He stayed there for a year and a half before moving to Manchester in 1986. Living in England he discovered the booming UK house scene and started DJing.^[2]

In 1987, he discovered the The Haçienda in Manchester, and met Mike Pickering the resident DJ. Chicago house and Detroit techno became popular, and Garnier started mixing there under the name of DJ Pedro.^[1]

In 1988, he went back to France to fulfill his military obligations.^[1] He also spent some time in New York where he met Frankie Knuckles.^[1] Garnier shifted his attention back to France in the early 1990s, running the Wake Up parties at the Rex Club in Paris for three years,^[1] while in 1992 he played a three-night long Weekender set at the Cork venue, Sir Henry's. He also mixed in clubs such as le Palace or le Boy, DJing in rave parties and gradually moving into recording as well. For the FNAC label, Garnier released "French Connection" and the A Bout de Souffle EP. After that label went out of business, he formed the F Communications label with Eric Morand (a friend who had also worked for FNAC).^[1][3] He often also DJed at "Open all hours" at London's Ministry of Sound on Friday nights, in the early and mid 1990s, and was a resident at The End before its closure in January 2009.

His first album, Shot in the Dark, was released in 1995.^[4] His second, 30, appeared in 1997 and included one of Garnier's best selling singles, "Crispy Bacon". 30 was followed by the retrospective Early Works. After appearing worldwide with DJ appearances during the late 1990s, Garnier returned to production with Unreasonable Behaviour, released in early 2000, which featured one of his best known songs, "The Man with the Red Face". In 2005, The Cloud Making Machine, was released, followed the next year by Retrospective. This was a best of compilation album, which had both his original work and remixes, including some released on vinyl-only, plus rare tracks. His latest album was Tales of a Kleptomaniac (2009).

Garnier has collaborated with System 7, and played several live shows with Bugge Wesseltoft (those recordings appeared on Public Outburst and Retrospective).

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.

The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.^[1]

History[link]

The earliest recorded use^{[citation needed]} of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." ^{[2][dubious – discuss]} In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

It was also used as a term for a drug dealer in the 1950s and 1960s and can be seen in such media as Curtis Mayfield's "No Thing On Me", William Burroughs's novel Naked Lunch, and in the Velvet Underground song "I'm Waiting for the Man", in which Lou Reed sings about going to Uptown Manhattan, specifically Lexington Avenue and 125th Street, to buy heroin.

The use of this term was expanded to counterculture groups and their battles against authority, such as the Yippies, which, according to a May 19, 1969 article in U.S. News and World Report, had the "avowed aim ... to destroy 'The Man', their term for the present system of government". The term eventually found its way into humorous usage, such as in a December 1979 motorcycle ad from the magazine Easyriders which featured the tagline, "California residents: Add 6% sales tax for The Man."

In present day, the phrase has been popularized in commercials and cinema, featuring particularly prominently as a recurring motif in the 2003 film School of Rock.^[3][4][5][6]

Use as praise[link]

The term has also been used as an approbation or form of praise. This may refer to the recipient's status as the leader or authority within a particular context, or it might be assumed to be a shortened form of a phrase like "He is the man (who is in charge)." One example of this usage dates to 1879 when Otto von Bismarck commented, referring to Benjamin Disraeli's pre-eminent position at the Congress of Berlin, "The old Jew, he is the man."^{[7][dubious – discuss]}

In more modern usage, it can be a superlative compliment ("you da man!") indicating that the subject is currently standing out amongst his peers even though they have no special designation or rank, such as a basketball player who is performing better than the other players on the court. It can also be used as a genuine compliment with an implied, slightly exaggerated or sarcastic tone, usually indicating that the person has indeed impressed the speaker but by doing something relatively trivial.

Nicole Evangeline Lilly (born August 3, 1979) is a Canadian actress who starred as Kate Austen in the ABC television drama Lost, from 2004 to 2010.

Personal life[link]

Evangeline Lilly was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, and raised in small-town British Columbia in a Baptist and Mennonite family.^[1] Her father was an economics teacher, and her mother was a beauty consultant.^[2] Lilly also has two sisters.^[3] She graduated from W. J. Mouat Secondary School in Abbotsford, British Columbia.^[4]

Lilly previously served as a missionary in the Philippines^[5] and a flight attendant with Royal Airlines.^[6] She speaks French very well.^[7] She attended the University of British Columbia and attained a degree in International Relations.

On December 20, 2006, Lilly's house in Kailua, Hawaii, was completely destroyed by fire while she was on the Lost set.^[8] The cause of the fire was an electrical problem.

Lilly was previously married to Canadian hockey player Murray Hone.^[9] From 2004 to 2009, she dated Lost co-star Dominic Monaghan.^[10] She had her first child, a son named Kahekili^[11] (Hawaiian for "the thunder"), with boyfriend Norman Kali in Hawaii in May 2011.^[10][12]

She appeared on G4's Judgment Day and in an uncredited role in the 2003 film Freddy vs. Jason as a high-school girl leaning against a locker, and some appearances in one episode of Smallville as an extra. She had a guest appearance on the ABC supernatural horror series Kingdom Hospital (2004). Lilly's first speaking role was on Lost.^[3]

In 2006, Lilly appeared in Just Yell Fire, a video aimed at teaching teenage girls how to defend themselves against rapists.^[13]

When cast as Kate Austen in Lost, her main concern was acquiring a work visa to enter the United States. With production literally days away and no news about the visa, casting directors were forced to grudgingly begin re-casting the role of Kate. After nearly 20 auditions, Lilly's work visa was approved.^[14]

On the heels of her role in Lost, she was voted one of the Breakout Stars of 2004 by Entertainment Weekly and on December 14, 2006, was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Lead Actress-Drama. Action figures of Lilly's Lost character were released during the holiday season of 2006. On May 11, 2010, Lilly announced on The View that she places writing and being a mother as top priorities, but she likes acting as a day job and she will continue acting when possible.^[15]

Lilly stated her intention on writing a children's books called The Squickerwonkers^[16] and to focus on feature films.^[17]

In October 2011, she appeared as Bailey Tallet in Real Steel, starring alongside Hugh Jackman. Despite having turned down a number of movie offers, she traveled to Los Angeles to acquire the part a few days after Shawn Levy, the director, sent her the script because of the emotional impact the story had on her^{[citation needed]}. Levy cast her because, in his words, "She's magnificent to look at, she's soulful, and she's sexy with Hugh. I needed someone who you believed had grown up in a man's world. Bailey needed to have a strength and a toughness that was not at the expense of her being womanly."^[18] She has mentioned she is uninterested in acting in nude or overly sexual scenes.^[3]

In 2012 Lilly will play the role of the Woodland Elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson's upcoming two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, due for release in December 2012 and 2013 and currently in production in New Zealand. The character, which does not appear in the original book by Tolkien, was created by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh^[19] as the head of the Elven guard who, like Legolas (who also appears in the film), wields a bow and two daggers as weapons. Her character will only appear briefly in the first film, more substantially until the second.^[19][20] Lilly, who had been a fan of Tolkien's books since she was 13,^[21] underwent training for swordplay and archery, as well as in the Elvish language for the role.^[19][22]
