Szil to Csorna, Hungary : Sicily to Ukraine by camper van part 66
SEE MY MOTORHOME GROUP ON FACEBOOK : https://www.facebook.com/motorhomefulltime I start from the western Hungarian village of Szil, in the county of Győr-Moson-Sopron where I had stopped for something to eat. Driving north east, I reflect on a previous visit to Hungary in 1995 and my experiences passing through Yugoslavia at war in that year. If only I had filmed things in those days! This small part of my journey finishes at Csorna, which is located near the Fertő-Hanság National Park which has a great deal of interesting bird life. People who follow my films will know how much I appreciate the ornithology of Hungary from my visit in 2012. I certainly intend to do a visit of the nature reserves in this country one day. Csorna is also the birth place of David Gestetner who invented a duplicating machine - a name I remember very well from my early days with office machinery. My channel on you tube : http://www.youtube.com/alanheath is very prolific. I have produced over 2,500 original films. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects. For those that want to know more, I have groups on facebook related to motorhome travelling, history and industrial packaging. Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating! I am very fortunate that I can spend a large part of my life travelling, thanks to the business I chose to run which allows me to do this. There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- http://www.ceepackaging.com - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine! Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!- published: 24 Dec 2013

Villa Furma, centre of Sicily (English Version) R'ESTATE IN SICILY
VILLA FURMA stands in between Enna and Piazza Armerina, county FURMA, in an area luxurious in vegetation, built in 1906 in Giarre's Art Nouveau style as a farm and villa. The building lies on a rectangular plot of acrage sizing about 3500 square meters whose center is this prestigious villa with frescoes, stucco, fireplaces and antique ornaments. There are six big symmetrical buildings around it : the farmer's house, the coachman, hot water, greenhouses, warehouse, stables, stores and the haystack. Two monumental entrances with iron gates and two antique sandstone portals give way from both the south and the north sides.- published: 10 Feb 2014

The Lombards
The Lombards
The Lombards or Langobards (Latin: Langobardī, Italian Longobardi), were a Germanic tribe who ruled a Kingdom in Italy from 568 to 774. The Lombard historian Paul the Deacon wrote in the Historia Langobardorum that the Lombards descended from a small tribe called the Winnili[1] who dwelt in southern Scandinavia[2] (Scadanan) before migrating to seek new lands. In the 1st century AD they formed part of the Suebi, in northwestern Germany. By the end of the 5th century they had moved into the area roughly coinciding with modern Austria north of the Danube river, where they subdued the Heruls and later fought frequent wars with the Gepids. The Lombard king Audoin defeated the Gepid leader Thurisind in 551 or 552; his successor Alboin eventually destroyed the Gepids at the Battle of Asfeld in 567. Following this victory, Alboin decided to lead his people to Italy, which had become severely depopulated after the long Gothic War (535--554) between the Byzantine Empire and the Ostrogothic Kingdom there. The Lombards were joined by numerous Saxons, Heruls, Gepids, Bulgars, Thuringians, and Ostrogoths, and their invasion of Italy was almost unopposed. By late 569 they had conquered all the principal cities north of the Po River except Pavia, which fell in 572. At the same time, they occupied areas in central and southern Italy. They established a Lombard Kingdom in Italy, later named Regnum Italicum ("Kingdom of Italy"), which reached its zenith under the 8th-century ruler Liutprand. In 774, the Kingdom was conquered by the Frankish King Charlemagne and integrated into his Empire. However, Lombard nobles continued to rule parts of the Italian peninsula well into the 11th century when they were conquered by the Normans and added to their County of Sicily. Their legacy is apparent in the regional appellation, Lombardy.- published: 05 Nov 2013

Vámoscsalád to Szil, Hungary : Sicily to Ukraine by camper van part 65
SEE MY MOTORHOME GROUP ON FACEBOOK : https://www.facebook.com/motorhomefulltime I spent the night in the western Hungarian village of Vámoscsalád and as I leave I describe some of the noises at night. Obviously when you are in a camper van, it is pot luck how your night will go if you decide to wild camp - and I always wild camp. The weather is beautiful as you would expect from a Saturday morning in June. It is just before seven as I leave - and as I keep mentioning in all my films, the best time of the day to travel is in the early morning. In this film, I pass through small villages in western Hungary and you can appreciate how much a plain this country is - compare it to the mountains in Austria that I passed through the previous day. This journey takes me out of Vas county and into Győr-Moson-Sopron county just beyond the village where I spent the night. My channel on you tube : http://www.youtube.com/alanheath is very prolific. Szombathely to Vasegerszeg : Sicily to Ukraine by camper van part 64
SEE MY MOTORHOME GROUP ON FACEBOOK : https://www.facebook.com/motorhomefulltime I leave the Tesco car park at Szombathely which is to the east of the town on the by pass. I note how cheap the milk is having spent most of the previous eight months in Italy - and most of that in Sicily - where milk is considerably more expensive, indeed I had to pay EUR1.80 per litre in the village where I lived! As I leave you get a good idea of the size of the nice retail park at Szombathely. It is a Friday evening which does not seem a good time to do your shopping there but by the time I leave the queue has gone done somewhat. Hungary built a motorway system during the socialist era, unlike other communist countries who only made often illogical attempts. I discuss this as I drive north east as we can see the construction of a motorway which I get the chance to use sporadically - as it is under construction, no doubt much to the relief of the people who live in the villages I pass through. I also note various 'television towers' in the countryside which I term as being UFOs due to their unusual appearance. As I leave Szombathely, it is now 19:30 in the evening and it is time to start looking for somewhere to sleep, not yet pressing as it is June but I like to have this sort of thing resolved by around 20:00. You can see how I look for a suitable overnight stop in this film. I show one failed attempt but my second attempt was successful. Szombathely is the 10th largest city in Hungary. It is the administrative centre of Vas county and probably the oldest city in Hungary. It was founded by the Romans in 45CE under the name of Colonia Claudia Savariensum (Claudius' Colony of Savarians), and it was the capital of the Pannonia Superior province of the Roman Empire. It lay close to the important "Amber Road" trade route. The city had an imperial residence, a public bath and an amphitheatre. In 2008, remains of a mithraeum were discovered. Emperor Constantine the Great visited Savaria several times. He ended the persecution of Christians, which previously claimed the lives of many people in the area, including Bishop St. Quirinus, St. Rutilus and St. Irenaeus. The emperor reorganised the colonies and made Savaria the capital of the province Pannonia Prima. This era was the height of prosperity for Savaria: its population grew, and new buildings were erected, among them theatres and churches. St. Martin of Tours was born here. After the death of Emperor Valentinian III, the Huns invaded Pannonia. Attila's armies occupied Savaria between 441 and 445. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 456.
