Wat Arun "Temple of the Dawn" in Bangkok, Thailand
Wat Arun, "Temple of the Dawn" is a Buddhist temple (wat) in the Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok, Thailand, on the Thonburi west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The temple is so named because the first light of the morning reflects off the surface of the temple with pearly iridescence. The monastery has existed for many years since the days when Ayutthaya was capital of Thailand. Shot with Canon 5D Mark II. Music: Kevin MacLeod licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0.

Thailand - Bangkok - Wat Arun (วัดอรุณ)
Wat Arun ( วัดอรุณ ); Temple of the Dawn; Wat Arunratchawararam; Wat Jaeng (formerly); Wat Makok (formerly); Wat Arunrajawararam Rajaworamahavihara Wat Arun was built in the days of Thailand's ancient capital of Ayutthaya, and was originally known as Wat Makok ("Olive Temple"). In the ensuring era when Thonburi was capital, King Taksin changed the name to Wat Chaeng. The temple briefly hosted the revered Emerald Buddha after it was recaptured from Laos, but it was moved to Wat Phra Kaew in 1784. King Rama II enlarged the central prang and changed the temple's name to Wat Arunratchatharam. The work was finished by King Rama III, and King Rama IV gave the temple its current full name of Wat Arunratchawararam.

Wat Arun (Thai วัดอรุณ, Temple of the Dawn) is a Buddhist temple (wat) in the Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok, Thailand, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The full name of the temple is Wat Arunratchawararam Ratchaworamahawihan (วัดอรุณราชวรารามราชวรมหาวิหาร). The outstanding feature of Wat Arun is its central prang (Khmer-style tower). It may be named "Temple of the Dawn" because the first light of morning reflects off the surface of the temple with a pearly iridescence. Steep steps lead to the two terraces. The height is reported by different sources as between 66,80 m and 86 m. The corners are surrounded by 4 smaller satellite prangs. The prangs are decorated by seashells and bits of porcelain which had previously been used as ballast by boats coming to Bangkok from China. The central prang is topped with a seven-pronged trident, referred to by many sources as the "trident of Shiva".[1] Around the base of the prangs are various figures of ancient Chinese soldiers and animals. Over the second terrace are four statues of the Hindu god Indra riding on Erawan. At the riverside are 6 pavilions (sala) in Chinese style. The pavilions are made of green ...

WAT ARUN Temple of the Dawn Bangkok, Thailand
Most sightseers travel by boat to see the fascinating Wat Arun Temple that is located close to the shore of the Chao Phraya River in the historic heart of Bangkok. According to legend, Wat Arun, The Temple of the Dawn, existed long before the founding of Bangkok. King Taksin, who reigned in the 17th century AD, chose this sanctuary as his royal temple and also gave it its present name. The journey up to the higher sections of the sanctuary travels past several splendid images, including various mythological and religious figures such as the Moon God, Soma. Over the years, the temple was further extended and decorated and the central 'prang' of the building complex grew taller and taller. It symbolizes Mount Meru, the Holy Mountain, upon which the Earth rests. The Hindu god Indra, that rides on the three-headed elephant, Erawan, was also included in the impressive temple complex of Wat Arun. The main tower and magnificent decor of the buildings are one of the most famous sights in Thonburi, the historical area of Bangkok.

Climbing Wat Arun
My friend Aom (in the red hat) and I climbing the steps of Wat Arun (The Temple of the Dawn) in Bangkok. The steps seem to get steeper with every level. Trying to hold the cam steady and climb those steps at the same time winded me at first. But it's certainly a beautiful view from the top! This was my November '10 trip to Thailand. The last time I'd been to Wat Arun (May '09) the top level had been blocked off. At some point in the video I tried to tell Aom that the top was blocked. She knew that it wasn't and corrected me. We went all the way to the top this time!

Loi Krathong - Chao Phraya River to Wat Arun, Bangkok, November 2009
One of the key Thai festivals on the annual calendar, Loi Krathong, took place on Monday evening, Bangkok's populace heading in droves for the water to light candles nestling on small "rafts" (Krathong) that are then gently lowered into the river, wishes are made, the hopes and dreams of city dwellers, along with any bad luck, consigned with a flourish for safekeeping to the dark swirling waters of the Chao Phraya River which winds like a giant, lazy snake through the heart of Bangkok. I start tonights adventure at the southern end of the city where the BTS line crosses the river, and I get a quick idea what is in store when I try to squeeze onto the Skytrain at Siam, which is packed to the rafters, not the norm for the post rush hour. Alighting from the spur line at Saphan Taksin Station where the BTS disgorges passengers before skimming over the Chao Phraya on the Taksin Bridge, I am immediately and, but less unexpectedly by now, thrust into a huge scrum of people. I was expecting it to be busy here as this one of the key transport hubs where the BTS meets the river, but its really, really busy. Getting down to the Sathorn Pier it is a case of filing slowly along past stall after stall of Krathong makers selling their wares, people behind the tables busily crafting these intricate arrangements, as buyers flock around, with the skill and dexterity of a lifetime of experience. The Krathongs themselves are mostly around ten inches across with a base tightly fashioned out ...

Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn is the Khmer style chedi on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River, opposite Wat Pho.
The decorations on Wat Arun are made from old crockery that was used as ballast on Chinese merchant ships.
The history of Wat Arun started when King Tak Sin made Thomburi his capital and decided to build his palace on the West bank of Chao Phraya River, Wat Makok was made the palace temple and renamed Wat Jaeng. King Rama lV later changed the name to Wat Arun Ratchavararam as it is called today.
