The Battle Over Citizen Kane
A comprehensive account of the making of Citizen Kane, still considered the greatest American movie ever made. It compares the larger than life personalities of the young maverick auteur Orson Welles and ruthless press magnate William Randolph Hearst who attempted to destroy the film before its release due to the startling similarities between himself and the central figure of Charles Foster Kane.

The author of this photo essay does not own the rights of the images or audio. All images, video and music sourced is that of the respective copyright holders. This photo essay is uploaded for educational purposes only. This digital photo essay is indented to facilitate Stage 6 10.3 Part III: Personalities in the Twentieth Century Modern History students in their study of Option 8: William Randolph Hearst. This Digital Story outlines the growth of 'yellow journalism' in the late 20th century as well as highlighting the role played by William Randolph Hearst and his New York Journal in its development. The battle between Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer is also presented along with the role of the Yellow-Kid Comic which appeared in both their newspaper, the New York Journal and New York World respectively. The use of images and newspaper front pages both from the late 20th century as well as contemporary images aim to provoke students to evaluate the impact and significance of the techniques used by William Randolph Hearst in his strive for readership and analyse the contributions made by William Randolph Hearst in the period in which he lived and beyond.

My Great-Grandfather Worked for William Randolph Hearst
My Great-Grandfather worked for William Randolph Hearst. He stayed at San Simeon (Hearst Castle) with Mr. Hearst and Hollywood people, and he ran Mr. Hearst's Chicago newspapers. He died in 2000, but he did this interview in 1996 (I'm only posting a part of it). My family still has friends from my Great-Grandfather's day, which helps me to understand who he was from their stories about my Great-Grandfather. I never met him (he died two years before I was born), but through the stories I've heard, he was really awesome, powerful, and helpful to people he knew, and many people he didn't know. I wish he were still alive today. I know we would really love each other!

William Randolph Hearst III
Friday, August 01, 2008 William Randolph Hearst III on Mainstream Media: "I don't think they should have a monopoly...." It was striking to hear William Randolph Hearst III, grandson of the great media baron, say of traditional media at our Stanford roundtable last week: "I don't think they should have a monopoly on how I surf for news." He went on to say that citizen journalism is "well underway," but that traditional media still has an important role to play. Quite a poignant declaration from Will, a former newspaper reporter, publisher, venture capitalist and private investor. Also in this segment is Jigar Thakarar, who heads content management at CBS Interactive. He spoke about monetizing some of the network's niche programs including WallStrip and Moblogic. More excerpts from the conference to come. --Andy Plesser, Executive Producer www.beet.tv

William Randolph Hearst III On Beet.TV
The Revver Investor Explains the Imperative of Contextual Advertising for Online Video I had the extraordinary opportunity to interview William "Will" Randolph Hearst III at his office in downtown San Francisco on Friday. Mr. Hearst is a former newspaper man one of the world's most influential venture capitalists, long associated with Kleiner Perkins. No longer a partner with the Menlo Park firm, he's now based in San Francisco where he is investing in a variety of start-ups in the online video world including Akimbo, Revver, the The NewsMarket and others. How poignant to speak with him about the evolution of the media business, just a few blocks from the Hearst building where his grandfather started the San Francisco Examiner in 1887. In our interview he talks about that history, the present time and where things are heading. This first clip (above) is an overview of the emerging online video world. A story about William Randolph Hearst
I always thought this would make a nice quick video, especially after watching this: www.youtube.com I took scenes from two movies: The first is the HBO original RKO 281 (1999, directed by Benjamin Ross), the true story about the making of Citizen Kane. The second is The Cats Meow (2001, directed by Peter Bogdanovich), a semi-true story about a Hollywood murder aboard William Randolph Hearsts yacht. (I highly recommend both movies.) In this scene, Mank (John Malkovich) takes one last stab at convincing his best friend Orson (Liev Schrieber) not to make a movie attacking Hearst. So he tells an old story about Hearst and his possible involvement in the death of Hollywood mogul Thomas H. Ince. Orson Welles: Liev Schrieber Herman Mankiewicz: John Malkovich William Randolph Hearst: Edward Herrmann Marion Davies: Kirsten Dunst Thomas H. Ince: Cary Elwes Charlie Chaplin: Eddie Izzard Louella Parsons: Jennifer Tilly I own nothing. This video was created purely for entertainment purposes. RKO 281 footage belongs to HBO. The Cats Meow footage belongs to Lions Gate.
