Northam is a small town in Devon, England, lying north of Bideford and south of Westward Ho!. It is thought to have been the site of an Anglo-Saxon castle, and is said to have been where Hubba the Dane attacked Devon and was repelled (perhaps by Alfred the Great or by the Earl of Devon). A little over a mile away along the coast is a town called Appledore. Between the towns of Appledore and Northam, is 'Bloody Corner'. The river continues southward, passes through the town of Ivybridge and becomes a ria shortly downstream near Ermington and Modbury, entering the English Channel near Kingston. The West Webburn is a stream in the Dartmoor moors in Devon in south-west England. It rises on the western side of the moors flowing off the east side of Hameldon ridge. Its source is extremely close to Grimspound Bronze Age settlement and it was probably the main source of water for the settlement. It flows south going through Ponsworthy and joins the East Webburn River. These combined streams then join the River Dart close to the village of Holne.

STUART Pearce was in Torbay to help celebrate the opening of a new £1.5m FIFA 2* artificial turf pitch and football development centre. The official opening, of the football development centre, included a primary school football festival. Invited guests alongside Stuart Pearce included Mayor Gordon Oliver, Torbay Councillors, representatives from Devon FA, primary and secondary head teachers and important members of the local community. Stuart Pearce, a former England footballer, Premiership manager, and the current Assistant England Coach, and U21 England Manager, gave a delighted crowd a day they will never forget. Stuart was a true gentleman, and we were very grateful for the 4 hours of his time that he gave to speaking to the pupils, signing autographs, having photos taken, and answering questions from the pupils, staff and parents. The new facilities will allow Paignton Community and Sports College to provide a variety of opportunities to the people of Torbay from 5 years olds to veterans. The project was funded with the help of a £808371.00 grant from the Football Foundation. Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government via Sport England, the Football Foundation is the nation's largest sports charity.

A short compilation of clips of the English Riviera, Torquay Paignton and Brixham taken with a cinefilm video camera from a family holiday in the 1980s. My guess is it's around 1986 or 1987. Quality is poor and there is no audio - the video reel was projected onto a wall which was recorded by a camcorder about 15 years ago, and only recently transferred from VHS tape to a DVD and then onto the computer, so it is a little grainy! You'll see a quick view across the bay and along the front at Torquay and around the gardens, Brixham harbour and the Golden Hind ship, and Paignton Zoo. You'll also see the Avenue Park Guest House on Avenue Road as it was at the time, owned and run (if I recall correctly) by Mr and Mrs Smith, with the red letter box at near the entrance gate. I imagine the colour scheme has changed many times over the years! Happy times! I'm sure those of you who have been there will recognise a lot of it. Ignore the kid making a tit of himself, he was a bit of a cheeky little bugger, haha!

jakeyboygen, GWRDec and I made a trip to the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway on Monday 24th August 2009. The railway was running their two train 'Peak Service' which would see nine departures each way during the day. The engines in action were GWR 2-8-0T 42xx Class 'Heavy Freight Tank' number 4277 'Hercules' and BR(W) 4-6-0 78xx 'Manor' Class number 7827 'Lydham Manor' both hauling a set of seven coaches along the line. The P&DSR; is one of the UK's most senic heritage lines running from the holiday resort of Paignton along the coast past Goodrington and Broadsands then uphill to the passing loop on the line at Churston before heading downhill through Greenway Tunnel and along the banks of the River Dart before ending at Kingswear, where a short trip across the Dart can take you to Dartmouth. During our visit the day started off miserable with grey skies and with the ocassional spat of rain but by 1300hrs it had cleared up and turned into a glorious hot summer's day, the type you would want on holiday. The plan jakeyboygen, GWRDec and I carried out - 1030 Paignton - Kingswear with 7827 1245 Kingswear-Goodrington Sands with 7827 1600 Goodrington-Paignton with 4277 1615 Paignton-Kingswear with 4277 1700 Kingswear-Paignton with 4277 I recommend this lovely railway in the heart of the English Riviera and their bacon rolls from Paignton station's 'On Track' Cafe are superb.

Monday 24th August 2009 the PDSR ran there peak timetable service since it was another summers day meaning up to two steam locomotives would be running trains up and down the Nations Holiday Line which starts at Paignton passing the sea from Goodrington to Churston were the line passes through the cliffs and after Greenway Tunnel you hit the stunning views of the River dart till you reach the end of the line at Kingswear. The Locomotives in action during the day were - BR(W) 4-6-0 78xx Manor Class 7827 'Lydham Manor' GWR 2-8-0T 4200 Class 4277 'Hercules' The day started for me at Taunton station were I joined JBTEvans on a train to Paignton and was soon joined by GWRDec (Who was on Holiday In Devon) at Exeter St Davids and I would like to thank them for another fantastic day out. The weather started out grey and dull with a bit of drizzle but soon it cleared up and the sun came out making it more perfect for a day out for riding and Filming. The day was a mix of Linesideing at some locations between Goodrington and Churston and outside Kingswear along the river and we also did 2 round trips on each of the locomotives that were running. The trains JBTEvans, GWRDec & I caught were 1030 Paignton - Kingswear with 7827 Lydham Manor 1245 Kingswear - Goodrington with 7827 Lydham Manor 1600 Goodrington - Paignton with 4277 'Hercules' 1615 Paignton - Kingswear with 4277 'Hercules' 1700 Kingswear - Paignton with 4277 'Hercules' In the video we see mainly some lineside shots as well ...

Great Western Castle Class no. 5029 Nunney Castle made her major public debut on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway during the Heritage Transport Gala. This was to be the first time since 2004 that a Castle had run on the line. The Castle came to the P&D; after suffering a overheated axle box, following her failed mainline run with 70013 to Cornwall back in early April. After being repaired and serviced she successfully passed her test trials, which meant she was rostered to run public service trains on the railway. In the days of steam Castles were often seen on the Kingswear branch hauling the Paddington-Kingswear services. With bright sunny spells the gala was set to be a big hit, after last years complete washout! Starting off the film begins with 5029 departing Goodrington Sands beginning her epic climbe up the 1 in 71, the power of a 4 cylinder Castle can be heard in all its glory. Seen again near Waterside Holiday Park she works really hard to keep her feet on the rails (this was her inaugural loaded run) she manages to make it up the summit. Seen again around the corner of Broadsands the Castle is fitted with the 'Torbay Express' headboard and the 146 headcode (Paddington-Kingswear headcode) With the sun setting 5029 crosses the 148 yard Hookhills Viaduct overlooking the spectacular view of Torbay. My 6th visit to the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway, 'The Nations Holiday Line' on Wednesday 13th August 2008. Now I know a hell of a lot of enthusiasts are against the P&DSR;, saying that they don't keep locomotives in original liveries along with naming them, using coloured lights etc, but I think the P&DSR; GWR liveries are better than the GWR real ones, come on, your saying 'Lydham Manor' looks rubbish?, and do the signals really matter? So if you hate it so much why do they keep going there? - because you know its one of the best lines in the country. The views are superb of Torbay, the sea and of the River Dart. I can understand naming locomotives because holiday-makers can say they were hauled by 'Goliath' for example, but I think naming coaches and brake vans is bloody daft. Also you got to remember the PDSR aren't an enthusiast line, they are aimed at tourists and that they are only using Steam Engines to attract them. The locomotives in action on the day of my visit were - | GWR 2-8-0T 5205 Class 5239 'Goliath' | BR(W) 4-6-0 78xx Manor Class 7827 'Lydham Manor' I visited with my Dad, Mum and sister Sophie and we did travel option Number Two, meaning steam train to Kingswear followed by a Ferry over to Dartmouth and return. Thursday 2nd August saw GWR 4900 Class 4-6-0 no.4936 'Kinlet Hall' working services on the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway, working to the 'Orange Timetable' she worked alongside GWR 4200 Class 2-8-0T no.4277 'Hercules', Kinlet of course was my main reason for going as I'd not seen her in her new BR Green livery before this, the last time I saw her was at the Severn Valley Railway three years ago. The weather was rather indecisive with patches of sun, rain and cloud as well as some strong winds, so filming was tricky at times. Shots included in this video are: - 4936 barks away from Greenway Halt working the 12:15 from Kingswear. - 4277 arrives at and departs from Greenway Halt on the 12:15 from Paignton. - 4936 arrives at Goodrington Halt on the 13:00 from Paignton then makes the ascent up Goodrington Bank making plenty of noise. - 4277 winds her way down Goodrington Bank on the 13:00 from Kingswear, afterwards she is seen climbing back up the bank in fine form working the 14:15 from Paignton. - 4936 rolls down to Goodrington on the 14:15 from Kingswear then powers back up on the 15:00 from Paignton. - 4277 passes by working the 15:00 from Kingswear, due to some idiots shouting and hollering in an attempt to ruin my video I had to make an attempt at dubbing that bit over, my first try at something like that and turned out pretty well. - 4277 pounds over Broadsands Viaduct working the 15:45 from Paignton, afterwards 4936 rolls down with the 15:45 from Kingswear (Did get a ...

Paignton (
/ˈpeɪntən/) is a coastal town in Devon in England. Together with Torquay and Brixham it forms the unitary authority of Torbay which was created in 1998. The Torbay area is a holiday destination known as the English Riviera. Paignton's population in the United Kingdom Census of 2001 was 48,251.[1] It has origins as a Celtic settlement and was first mentioned in 1086. It grew as a small fishing village and a new harbour was built in 1847. A railway line was opened to passengers in 1859 creating links to Torquay and London. As its population increased, it merged with the villages of Goodrington and Preston.

Paignton is mentioned in the Domesday Book of AD 1086. Formerly written Peynton and Paington, the name is derived from Paega's town, the original Celtic settlement. Paignton was given the status of a borough having a market and fair in 1294.[2]
Paignton was a small fishing village until the 19th century, when in 1837 the Paington (sic) Harbour Act led to the construction of a new harbour and the modern spelling, Paignton, first appeared. The historic part of Paignton is centred around Church Street, Winner Street and Palace Avenue which contain fine examples of Victorian architecture. Kirkham House is a late medieval stone house which is open to the public at certain times of year.[3] The Coverdale Tower adjacent to Paignton Parish Church is named after Bishop Miles Coverdale, who published an English translation of the Bible in 1536. Coverdale was Bishop of Exeter between 1551 and 1553 and is reputed to have lived in the tower although this is doubted by modern historians.[2]
The railway line to Paignton was built by the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway, and opened to passengers on 2 August 1859, providing Torquay and Paignton with a link to London.
The Paignton Pudding, first made in the 13th century, is the origin of the nickname pudden eaters for the people of Paignton. The puddings were made infrequently and were of great size. When thousands turned up hoping to obtain a piece of a huge pudding that had been baked to celebrate the arrival of the railway[4] chaos occurred and the event became notorious. A Paignton Pudding was baked in 1968 to celebrate the town's charter, and another baked in 2006 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Oldway Mansion is a large house and gardens constructed in the 1870s for Isaac Merritt Singer, who had amassed a considerable fortune by dint of his improvements to the sewing machine. The building is occupied by Torbay Council.[5] Other Singer legacies in Paignton include the Palace Hotel and the Inn On The Green, which were built as homes for Singer's sons Washington and Mortimer.
Torquay Tramways were extended into Paignton in 1911 but the network was closed in 1934.[6]
Governance[link]
As Paignton's population grew, it merged with the coastal villages of Goodrington and Preston. The town was governed by an urban district council until 1968, when the creation of Torbay Council led to a single body covering Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The unitary authority formed in 1998 now handles all local government for Torbay, which has a directly elected mayor and 36 councillors. They are elected every four years. The Mayor chooses nine councillors to form the Cabinet. The Chairman of Torbay Council wears the chain of office.[7] The first elected mayor was Nick Bye, elected in 2005. In 2011 Gorden Oliver became the second.[8] Paignton is in the Torbay constituency, with Adrian Sanders the incumbent Liberal Democrat MP. In the 2009 European elections, the United Kingdom Independence Party topped the poll in Torbay with 34.4% of the vote.[9]
Economy[link]
Paignton's economy relies extensively on tourism and the town is marketed as a location for family holidays. The main seafront area is dominated by Paignton Pier,[10] a 780-foot (240 m) long structure opened in 1879. It was designed by George Soudon Bridgman, the local architect who also designed the original Oldway Mansion. The Festival Theatre, opened in 1967, was once a seafront theatre capable of staging large summer shows. In 1999 it was converted into a multiscreen cinema. Regatta Week during early August is the peak holiday season. During this period there is a funfair on Paignton Green, along with a large fireworks display. Later in August is Children's Week, which includes a wide range of events and competitions. Paignton has a variety of holiday accommodation, complemented by numerous pubs, nightclubs and restaurants.
Tourist attractions include Paignton Zoo and the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, which operates steam trains from Paignton to Kingswear, from where a ferry can be taken across the River Dart to Dartmouth. The line was closed by British Rail during the cutbacks of the Beeching era in the 1960s, and is operated today as a heritage railway line.
Suttons Seeds, a supplier of seeds, bulbs and horticultural products, is based in Paignton.
Places of interest[link]
The Torbay Picture House (now closed) is believed to have been Europe's oldest purpose-built cinema and was built in 1907. Seat 2 Row 2 of the circle was the favourite seat of crime novelist Agatha Christie, who lived in neighbouring Torquay. The cinemas and theatres in her books are all said to be based on the Torbay Picture House. It was also used as a location for the 1984 Donald Sutherland film Ordeal by Innocence and the 1981 film The French Lieutenant's Woman (which was filmed mainly at Lyme Regis in Dorset).[12][13]
The Royal Bijou Theatre is now demolished, but a blue plaque marking its former location can be found next to the Thomas Cook travel agency in Hyde Road. The theatre was the venue for the premiere of The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan on 30 December 1879. The performance was given at short notice in order to secure the British copyright on the work after problems had arisen with unauthorised performances of HMS Pinafore in the USA.[14]
The department store Rossiters was a centrepiece of the town until it closed in 2009. The store is said to have been the inspiration for the sitcom Are You Being Served?.[15]
From 1889 to 1897 the mathematician Oliver Heaviside lived in Palace Avenue, in the building now occupied by Barclays Bank. A commemorative blue plaque can be seen on the wall. Heaviside is buried in Paignton Cemetery.
Beaches[link]
Paignton beach and the nearby Preston Sands are used for water sports including kite surfing and dinghy sailing. The reed beds found at Broadsands beach are a haunt of the rare Cirl Bunting.[16] Hollicombe beach features a geological stratotype at its northern end, known as the "Corbyn's Head Member"[17] Elberry Cove is used by jetski enthusiasts, while Saltern Cove is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its distinctive geology.
Transport[link]
Paignton railway station is situated close to the shops and a short walk from the beach along Torbay Road. Queen's Park Station for the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway is adjacent to the main railway station on the beach side of the level crossing. The bus and coach station face the main entrance to the railway station.

Stuart Pearce MBE (born 24 April 1962) is an English football manager and former player. He is currently manager of the England national under-21 team and most recently been made manager of the Great Britain Olympic football team.[2][3] As a player, Pearce captained both the England national football team and Nottingham Forest, turning out 78 times for England between 1987 and 1999.
He retired as a player in 2002 while at Manchester City. He remained with the club as a coach under Kevin Keegan's managership until being promoted to the manager's job in 2005. He was manager of the club for two years before being dismissed. He is now full-time manager of the England U-21 team, a position he previously held part-time while still Manchester City manager.

Playing career[link]
Early career[link]
Born in Shepherds Bush, London, Pearce first attended Fryent Primary School in Kingsbury, North West London before attending Claremont High School in Kenton. He failed a trial at Queens Park Rangers and then rejected an offer from Hull City, instead settling into a career in the non-league game with his local side, Wealdstone, while training and working as an electrician and plumber. For almost five years, he was the first choice full back for the team, then amongst the biggest names of non-league football in the Alliance Premier League.
Coventry City[link]
In 1983 Wealdstone received an unexpected offer of £30,000 (then a huge sum for a semi-professional player) for Pearce from then top-flight club Coventry City. Sky Blues manager Bobby Gould had been to watch Wealdstone, and was impressed by Pearce's determination and combative attitude. Pearce agreed to the step up in clubs reluctantly – making his professional debut for Coventry immediately. He established himself as an uncompromising left back who played hard but fair.
Nottingham Forest[link]
Two years later he was brought to Nottingham Forest by manager Brian Clough as the makeweight in a £300,000 deal which also saw Coventry's centre back Ian Butterworth move to Forest. Indeed, so unsure was Pearce of his footballing future that, after the transfer, he actually advertised his services as an electrician in Forest's match-day programme.
Pearce spent 12 years at Forest, most of it as club captain. During his playing career he won two League Cups and the Full Members Cup, while also scoring from a free kick in the 1991 FA Cup final, when Forest were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur. In his time at the City Ground, Pearce was one of the Forest players who had to cope with the horrors of the Hillsborough disaster during the opening minutes of their FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool. Pearce played in the rescheduled game at Old Trafford, which Liverpool won 3–1. He helped them finish third in the league that year (as they had done a year earlier), and also contributed to their victories in the Football League Cup and Full Members Cup. He helped them retain the Football League Cup a year later and in 1991 he had his first crack at the FA Cup, and despite giving Forest an early lead against Tottenham Hotspur in a game most remembered for the knee injury suffered by Pearce's opponent Paul Gascoigne, Pearce ended up on the losing side as Spurs came back to win 2–1. He was on the losing side at Wembley again the following year when Forest lost 1–0 to Manchester United in the Football League Cup final. [4]
Despite their relegation from the top flight in 1993, Pearce decided to stay, helping Forest to gain promotion the following season, including scoring a header to secure promotion, under new manager Frank Clark following the retirement of Brian Clough after 18 years at the helm. He helped Forest finish third in the Premier League in the season following promotion and reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals a year later.
He was appointed caretaker player-manager of Forest in December 1996, after Clark resigned with Forest bottom of the Premier League. His first game was at home to Arsenal. He admitted in an interview with Match of the Day, that in his first attempt at picking a starting eleven, he did not realise until it was pointed out to him by his wife that he had omitted goalkeeper Mark Crossley. However Forest won the game 2–1, coming from behind after an Ian Wright goal with 2 goals from Alf-Inge Haaland.[5] Despite winning manager of the month in January 1997, the club were relegated from the Premier League. He had relinquished managerial duties in March 1997 on the appointment of Dave Bassett.
He opted to leave the club at the end of the 1996–97 season after twelve years at the City Ground.
Later career[link]
Pearce joined Newcastle United along with fellow veterans John Barnes and Ian Rush in the 1997-98 season under Kenny Dalglish and played in the 1998 FA Cup Final, though again he emerged on the defeated side. He scored once during his spell at Newcastle, in a Champions League tie against Dynamo Kiev.[6] Eventually Pearce was isolated, along with other players including Rob Lee and John Barnes upon Kenny Dalglish's sacking after Ruud Gullit took over. A number of players were treated coldly by Gullit, and Pearce along with Barnes and Lee were made to train with the reserves despite cumulatively having over 150 England caps between them. Both Pearce and Barnes assert in their autobiographies Gullit felt threatened by the senior players in the squad, and they felt they were being sidelined to prevent them challenging him for the manager's position should it arise. Pearce claims also that he once kicked Gullit up in the air during a training session, and a number of other players sniggered at this due to Gullit's poor relationship with them.[7]
He went on to play for West Ham United, a year after falling out of favour with Newcastle manager Ruud Gullit. In 2001 he joined Manchester City for what would be the final season in his career. He captained the club to the First Division championship. In the final game of his career, against Portsmouth, he had the aim to reach 100 career goals.[8] He took a penalty kick for City four minutes into injury time, but missed it along with the chance to reach his target.[9]
Throughout his career, he was given the nickname of "Psycho" for his unforgiving style of play. This was initially a tag afforded to him only by Forest fans, though later it was adopted by England supporters too. Former England Team mate Matthew Le Tissier has since described him as his scariest opponent in his book Taking Le Tiss. Former Nottingham Forest team mate Roy Keane said he was a "Man amongst boys" at Forest. In recognition of his talents and his support for various charities, he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in January 1999.[10]

Debut[link]
He made his debut for England against Brazil in a 1-1 friendly draw at Wembley on 19 May 1987 at the age of 25, at the end of his second season with Nottingham Forest and his fourth as a Football League player.
He would soon become the first choice left back for his country, in so doing wresting the number three jersey from Kenny Sansom prior to Sansom's thirtieth birthday. Injury robbed him of a place as Sansom's back-up in England's squad for the 1988 European Championships, but after the tournament, coach Bobby Robson decided to make Pearce his first choice left back. He ultimately became Forest's most capped player and ended up with 78 international appearances to his name.
He finally found the net for England in his 21st senior appearance for the nation on 25 April 1990, scoring in a 4-2 friendly win over Czechoslovakia at Wembley.
1990 World Cup[link]
At the 1990 World Cup, Pearce had a goal ruled out from a free kick during a group game against the Netherlands, but played well throughout the tournament, setting up a goal for David Platt in the quarter-finals and operating as a more attacking left back than normal as England deployed a sweeper system. England progressed to the semi-finals, and Pearce was one of two players (the other being Chris Waddle) to miss a penalty in the shoot-out against West Germany after the match had ended in a 1–1 draw. Pearce left the field in tears.
The following summer, on 8 June 1991, he scored his second England goal in a 2-0 win over New Zealand during the England side's tour of Oceania. This game was his 40th appearance for England.[11]
Euro 92[link]
Pearce played in an unsuccessful Euro 92 campaign for England, when they failed to win any of their group games. He had a free kick strike the underside of the crossbar and bounce away from goal in a drawn game against France.
1994 World Cup[link]
England's failure to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States included a mistake by Pearce, when his underhit back pass allowed forward Davide Gualtieri to score for San Marino (who at the time had never won an international game) inside the first eight seconds of their qualifier. England still won the game 7–1, but qualification was highly unlikely anyway as England needed Poland to defeat the Netherlands, but the Dutch won the game 3–1 and England were knocked out.
Euro 96[link]
When Terry Venables became England coach later in 1994, Pearce lost his place to Graeme Le Saux but then regained it after Le Saux suffered a broken leg. Pearce stayed in the side into the Euro 96 competition, laying his ghosts to rest with a successful penalty in a quarter-final shoot-out against Spain, which England won. His forceful, emotional celebration in front of an ecstatic Wembley crowd became one of English football's most celebrated images. He repeated the feat in the semi-final shoot-out against Germany but once again the Germans emerged victorious.
After the tournament, Pearce joined fellow England penalty missers Chris Waddle and Gareth Southgate (who missed in Euro 96) in a light-hearted commercial for Pizza Hut in which they poked fun at their own misfortunes.
International retirement[link]
Pearce had intended to retire from international football after Euro 96,[citation needed] but new national coach Glenn Hoddle persuaded him to change his mind and he continued his international career for a few more seasons. He was not selected for the 1998 World Cup, but the appointment of Kevin Keegan to the England job and Pearce's form for West Ham prompted a recall for the 37-year-old for two qualifying games for Euro 2000. Pearce's broken leg later put paid to further international chances and he ended his international career in 1999 with 78 caps, which for a time put him in the all-time top ten appearance makers for England.
His last appearance for England was in a goalless draw in Poland on 8 September 1999 in the Euro 2000 qualifiers. His last goal had come on 8 September 1993 (when he was playing outside the top flight at club level following Nottingham Forest's relegation) in a 3-0 World Cup qualifier win over Poland.[12]
At 37 years and 137 days, he was the third-oldest outfield player ever to appear for England (only Stanley Matthews and Leslie Compton, plus five goalkeepers, have been older).
During his one match tenure, Peter Taylor appointed Pearce as assistant manager. England played, and lost to, Italy in Turin.
Coaching career[link]
Manchester City[link]
After ending his playing career with Manchester City, he remained at the club as a coach under manager Kevin Keegan. In March 2005, less than three years after retiring, he was appointed caretaker of City after Keegan left the club.[13] After a successful run of form, which put the club close to UEFA Cup qualification, Pearce was given the job on a permanent basis.[14] However, they missed the opportunity to reach Europe on the final game of the season by drawing 1–1 with Middlesbrough. Robbie Fowler missed a penalty in the last minute which, if it had gone in, would have given City a UEFA Cup place.
Despite a successful start to the 2005–06 season, Man City finished 15th in the Premiership due to losing nine of the last ten games. They were also eliminated from the League Cup by League One side Doncaster Rovers. Pearce developed the reputation as being unusually fair and honest by refusing to criticise referees for mistakes they may have made.[15] He was also touted as a potential successor for England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson.[16]
Pearce failed to bring about an improvement in the 2006–07 season which saw Man City come close to relegation.[17] The club were again eliminated from the League Cup by a League One team, this time by Chesterfield. The side also scored just 10 goals at home in the league, and none after New Years Day in 2007, a record low in top-flight English football.[18] Pearce was sacked at the end of the season in May 2007.[19]
England Under 21s[link]
In February 2007, before his sacking by Man City, Pearce had been appointed manager of the England Under-21 team,[20] initially part-time in conjunction with his role at Man City. Under his guidance, England reached the semi-finals of the 2007 UEFA Under-21 Championships but were eliminated on penalties by the hosts, the Netherlands. This success, coupled with the ending of his job at Man City, saw him appointed as the full-time manager of the England Under-21 team in July 2007.[21]
His role in the England set-up was extended in January 2008 when new manager Fabio Capello appointed Pearce as a coach for the senior England team in addition to his Under-21 duties.[22]
In June 2009, he guided the England Under 21's to the final of the 2009 UEFA Under-21 Championships where they lost 4–0 to Germany.[23]
Great Britain Olympic football team[link]
On 20 October 2011, Pearce was named as the coach for the Great Britain Olympic football team.[24] He began his role by writing to 191 players informing them of his interest in selecting them for the team. Only seven of these players ruled themselves out of contention. The players under the age of 23 who have ruled themselves in include Gareth Bale (Tottenham/Wales), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal/Wales), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea/England), Jack Rodwell (Everton/England), Jack Butland (Birmingham City/England), Josh McEachran (Chelsea/England), Nathaniel Clyne (Crystal Palace/England), James Forrest (Celtic/Scotland), Adam Matthews (Celtic/Wales) and Jordan Rhodes (Huddersfield/Scotland). The players over the age of 23 who have ruled themselves include David Beckham (LA Galaxy/England), Ryan Giggs (Manchester United/Wales), Craig Bellamy (Liverpool/Wales), Chris Brunt (West Brom/Northern Ireland), Steven Fletcher (Wolves/Scotland), Joe Cole (Lille/England), Scott Brown (Celtic/Scotland), Michael Mancienne (Hamburg/England) and Craig Gordon (Sunderland/Scotland).[25][26][27][28] A further cut was announced in April 2012, with the shortlist of eligible players reduced to around 80.[29][30]

On 8 February 2012, it was announced by David Bernstein that, following the resignation of Fabio Capello, Pearce would take charge of England's home friendly against the Netherlands on 29th February 2012. The match ended in a defeat for England, losing the game 3-2 after coming from 2-0 down late on to draw level, only for a late Arjen Robben goal to win the game for the Dutch.[31]
Personal life[link]
Pearce is a devotee of punk rock and is visible as one of the members of a frenetic audience featured on the cover of a live album by one of his favourite bands, The Lurkers. Additionally, he has met The Stranglers nearly 30 times, and has had a record label named after him by the band, Psycho Records. He also enjoys reading, going to the theatre and owns racehorses with his wife, Liz.[citation needed]
In 1994, Pearce was accused of directing a racial slur in Paul Ince's direction during a Nottingham Forest-Manchester United match.[32] It was alleged Pearce called Ince an arrogant black c**t.[33] Pearce has since admitted the offence, saying "it wasn't appropriate at the time".[34]
In 1998, Pearce was involved in a serious car crash, when the car he was driving was crushed by a lorry overturning and landing on the roof of the car. Pearce escaped with only minor hand injuries and a stiff back.[35]
His autobiography, Psycho, was released in 2001 and became a Sunday Times best seller.[citation needed]
His brother Dennis is a British National Party activist and was third on the BNP list for London for the European Parliament election, 2009. However, in a brief statement through the FA – which has a strong anti-racism stance – Pearce said: "My brother's views are his own and do not in any way reflect mine.".[36]
