Taliban video showing attack on Camp Salerno
Taliban video showing attack on Camp Salerno
The Taliban has released a new video that offers a chilling play-by-play account of a deadly, coordinated attack on large U.S. base that climaxed with an explosion so strong the shockwaves could be felt for miles away. The hour-long video, released by the group's propaganda wing, shows the entire attack, which took place last month, from its initial planning stages to the dramatic moment when a suicide bomber detonates a ten-ton bomb outside the gates of Camp Salerno, the third largest U.S. base in the country. The blast is captured from three cameras, each at different angles, while militants provide commentary in the background. In addition to offering rare insight into the group's planning for a large mission, the video also shows the Taliban's increasingly sophisticated video production capabilities. The interviews are shot in a style that look more like something seen on an American reality TV show than the deserts of Afghanistan and the jihadi songs that play in the background feature digitally-altered vocals. The Taliban claim twenty coalition troops were killed in the attack -- numbers that NATO denies. While the footage does not show any specific casualties, it does show major damage to the base, including the crumpled roofs of nearby buildings, the sheer force of the explosion ripping them up from their bearings. The main target of the bomb, the dining hall, was completely flattened. Initially, NATO did not report any casualties, but later admitted two American troops were killed and three dozen suffered serious wounds, while more than 100 others were treated for minor injuries. Earlier in the video, many of the militants can be seen wearing U.S. army fatigues as they train in the mountains with rocket propelled grenades, mortars, and AK-47's. In a show of strength, the group's commander practices firing from two AK-47s simultaneously, one in each hand. Later, he is seen briefing the militants on the mission. The briefing includes aerial photographs, plus a miniature mockup indicating the locations of the major targets inside the base.- published: 24 Jul 2012

An exact death toll has has yet to be confirmed; a spokesperson for Russia's state Investigative Committee said at least 14 people have died; while the regional governor said there were 15 casualties. The bomber, who has not yet been named, detonated the device just before reaching the metal detectors in Volgograd station. Russia's Investigative Committee representative, Vladimir Markin, spoke of the force of the blast. "The power of the explosion was equivalent to at least 10 kilograms of TNT," he said. "The explosive device was stuffed with pieces of scrap metal and the blast happened near the metal detectors located at the entrance to the station" Dmitri Makovkin, a 29-year-old police officer, reportedly perished on site while stopping the bomber from advancing further into the station. This is the second deadly attack in southern Russia in three days. On December 27, a car bomb in Pyatigorsk killed three people; while on October 21, 2013, a female suicide bomber also struck in Volgograd, killing seven people. President Vladimir Putin has apparently ordered law enforcement agencies to improve security. While a federal police spokesman said there will be increased security at train stations and airports. Sunday's attack will bolster fears of attacks by Islamist militants as Russia prepares to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Volgograd lies close to Russia's North Caucasus, a strip of mostly Muslim provinces plagued by near-daily violence. In a video posted online in July, Islamist insurgent leader and Chechen warlord, Doku Umarov, urged militants to use "maximum force" to prevent President Putin from staging the Olympics. The Games will be held in the Black Sea city of Sochi, around 690 kilometres from Volgograd, in February 2014. Sunday's attack was the deadliest to strike Russia's heartland since Islamist insurgents killed 37 people at a Moscow airport in January 2011. Bombing commuters just got harder
Last June, the stand-off detection of explosives (STANDEX) project, which is being developed in the NATO-Russia cooperation framework, was tested in the underground railway of a European capital. This innovative system combines three different detection technologies into a data merging and tracking system, and may help NATO countries and Russia to counter terrorist attacks more effectively.- published: 30 Oct 2013

Life in a Circle
How to explain it? Just this morning I sat reading the brutal and overarching headlines in the newspapers and as I did so, I found myself detecting little things around me I’d taken no real notice of before. Massacre in Kenya, Gunmen Kill Dozens (The weather-worn front windows of our house that face out onto the street, where children were playing); Afghan Insider Attack, 3 Coalition Soldiers Dead (A snapshot of my son taken seven years ago, when he was so full of teen angst, so painfully young); Suicide Attack Kills Scores in Baghdad (My wife’s shoulder length hair, baby-thin now and the color of scratched ice).
Do you know what I’m trying to say? The especially cruel headlines this morning and the stories that followed took every bit of my concentration; for a few cold, hard minutes I was learning some things about the world that I need to know. And yet these very same headlines and stories left me sitting there, feeling even more ineffectual, angry and anxious. And so in a kind of reflexive, maybe defensive way, my mind wandered, to what’s beautiful.
A couple of years ago I was photographing an annual report for a pharmaceutical company and ended up in a hospital in downtown Guatemala City, where I was privileged to witness one of those mostly unnoticed and un-newsworthy events that speak of how giving some people can be. Permit me to share this story with you.

Kashmir. India.
Video produced by Picture Tank for the 2010 Arles festival.
Since the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, India and Pakistan have been at odds over the Muslim-majority region of Kashmir.
Kashmir is largely the most militarized area in the world. Media and humanitarian organizations estimated that just in the Indian Kashmir are dislocated more then one million men among military and paramilitary forces, basically one every ten civilians.
On the India-controlled side, some 80,000 people have died as a result of a long-running insurgency. India's army is regularly accused of human-rights abuses.
The Kashmir issue seems to be one of those endless conflicts. At the same time the news of frequent mujahedin suicide attacks, the civil massacres, and the repeated human right violations fall behind in the international media agenda.

Imran Qureshi: Met Rooftop Installation - Behnam Nateghi Report (5-`15-2013)
Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi, 40, brings his large-scale installation to the Roof Garden of New York's Metropolitan Museum. "For the past two or three years I have been using this kind of imagery of blood and the foliage working together," the artist says in an interview with VOA Persian TV's New York correspondent Behnam Nateghi. "Pakistan was the main target for suicide attacks and bomb blasts." His floor painting, in blood color, depicts wings of angels, flower and fauna, in the style of Mogul miniature, as well as splatters of blood. But the artist says his work's references are not limited to terrorism and Pakistan. "It has layers of meaning. People can really relate to it on so many different levels," Qureshi says.

Afghan troops disarm suicide bomber's vest
Afghan troops disarm suicide bomber's vest
Afghan security forces defuse a suicide bomber's explosive vest while he is still wearing it, preventing an attack on cricketers in Jalalabad. Provincial police chief Mohammad Sharif Amin reported that the man carrying a suicide bomb was walking near young people playing cricket and was stopped by security forces. "The suicide bomber was trying to reach the crowd of youths playing cricket, the bomber was spotted looking suspicious by the Afghan intelligence department," said Amin. "He was arrested with his gun and his vest. The bomber is a citizen of Pakistan and is under investigation." Nearly 300 Afghan police and soldiers have been killed just in the month of June; an increase in casualties among the Afghan forces taking over security from foreign troops. Combat troops from NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) are preparing to leave Afghanistan by the end of next year, ending a costly and increasingly unpopular war.
