The Day the Earth nearly Died - P1
Permian Extinction 250 Millions years ago, which caused extinction of 95% of all living species in both animals & plants life. This extinctions was slow and took nearly 80000 years in 3 stages: 1- Increase in world temperature by 5 degrees Centigrade casued by super lengthy eruptions of Siberian Trapes 2-melting the frozen resoviours of Mehtan gas in the seabeds and releasing Carbon 12 (C12), which is a green house gas and raised sea temp by anothre 5 degrees, and that casued 3-world temp raised 10 degrees and that caused the mass extinctions it took Earth millions of years to recover and after 20 millions years from then Dinosaurs first appeared

1987 Permian Arlington James "Boobie" Miles
The 1987 Texas High School 5A Quarterfinal game which sees the Odessa Permian Panthers come back to defeat the Arlington Colts. Many people have asked for James "Boobie" Miles footage, so here some is. It's all I've got, in fact. He has a few big plays, but Shawn Crow is the hero in this game. To clear up some confusion, I'll try to explain why Permian "wins" 35-35. Before overtime, if a game ended in a tie, it counted as a tie. However, in the playoffs, a winner had to be determined. Penetrations, or trips inside the opponents 20 would be the deciding factor. If penetrations were tied, it would go to which team had more first downs. If first downs were tied, it went to total yardage. If total yardage was tied (VERY unlikely), I don't know what would have determined a winner, maybe penalty yards. When Permian scores to make it 28-27, they're tied on penetrations at 4, but are losing on first downs, so they try to go for 2 and the win but are stopped short. Arlington immediately scores, only picking up one first down in the process, and taking a lead on penetrations 5-4 as well as a lead in the game 35-27. Permian gets the ball back, ties the game 35-35 after a two-point conversion, ties the penetrations 5-5, and takes a 13-11 lead on first downs. Arlington gets the ball back and needs either points to win the game outright, a penetration to win 6-5 on penetrations, or two first downs to tie the first down category and win on total yardage. They get one first down, but ...

1988 Odessa Permian vs Midland Lee Friday Night Lights
For those who have read the book Friday Night Lights or seen the movie, this is the actual game against Midland Lee. It also includes the introduction of the offense for those interested in seeing what the Permian Panthers looked like. The book is not entirely true about many things, and the movie further distorts things. This game DID force a 3-way tie in district which required a coin toss to determine playoff contenders. It took me over 6 years of searching to find a complete copy of this game, but someone in Odessa somehow found it.

1988 Odessa Permian vs Dallas Carter
By popular request, I'm putting this on youtube. First and foremost, special thanks goes to Terry Allan and mojoland.net (where I got this video). If you've never been there, go! His site is amazing! These are very brief highlights of the Odessa Permian vs Dallas Carter game that took place in Austin. This is the semifinals. Carter, with much more size and strength, send 23 players to college on football scholarships. Meanwhile, Permian, with no real individual talent, or size, hangs in there. Carter wins this game and defeats Converse Judson for the state championship a week later, but were forced to forfeit all playoff wins (for playing an ineligible player), so technically Permian is the winner of this game 1-0.

Clues to the End-Permian Extinction
Paleoecologist Conrad Labandeira travels to the Karoo Basin of South Africa to find leaf fossils from the Permian-Triassic boundary, the time of the Earth's largest mass extinction. What can bug bites on the leaves tell us about the food web during a global upheaval? What can they tell us about our own uncertain times? The Permian Mass Extinction (With References)
Expand For References: 251 million years ago, at the close of the Paleozoic, the Earth nearly died. Literally. And completely. It's estimated that 85-90% of all life became extinct. The more familiar Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs paled in comparison. Why? What caused the seas and air to become poison? Could it happen again? This vid is an abridgement of "The Day The Earth Nearly Died", an episode of BBC's "Horizon" program. Permian History Methane Gas Explosion From Ocean Wiped Out 95% Of Life
6/02/2010 - "Major theory is that oceans can and have produced methane gas, and was responsible for the Permian Mass Extinction. This explosion killed up to 95% of life on earth during that period. A seafloor basin of methane saturated water may have a breaking point. An earthquake, underwater landslide, or even an meteor impact could have triggered this, and suddenly, like shaking a giant soda bottle, the deepest part of the ocean would have exploded in a deadly storm of methane bubbles." Something similar happened in 1986 in Lake Nyos in the nation of Cameroon in Africa. This created a ground level carbon dioxide cloud that killed many nearby villagers. This is also mentioned in this video. My personal concern is the oil-saturated Gulf of Mexico and the idea of using the a nuke to seal the flow.

Oil Boom In Permian Basin In West Texas
Modern day oil boom taking place. The Permian Basin is a sedimentary basin largely contained in the western part of the US state of Texas and the southeastern part of the state of New Mexico. It reaches from just south of Lubbock, Texas, to just south of Midland and Odessa, extending westward into the southeastern part of the adjacent state of New Mexico. It is so named because it has one of the world's thickest deposits of rocks from the Permian geologic period. The greater Permian Basin comprises several component basins: of these, Midland Basin is the largest, Delaware Basin is the second largest, and Marfa Basin is the smallest. The Permian Basin extends beneath an area approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles long. The Permian Basin gives its name to a large oil and natural gas producing area, part of the Mid-Continent Oil Producing Area. Total production for that region up to the beginning of 1993 was over 14.9 billion barrels. The towns of Midland and Odessa serve as the headquarters for oil production activities in the basin. The Permian Basin is also a major source of potassium salts (potash), which are mined from bedded deposits of sylvite and langbeinite in the Salado Formation of Permian age. Sylvite was discovered in drill cores in 1925, and production began in 1931. The mines are located in Lea and Eddy counties, New Mexico, and are operated by the room and pillar method. Halite (rock salt) is produced as a byproduct of potash mining. Content Source Cited ...

Evolution Permian-Triassic Extinction
www.myspace.com One of the most dramatic and mysterious events in the history of life, the so-called "Great Dying" of animals and plants some 250 million years ago, continues to fascinate and baffle scientists. Of the five or so mass extinctions recorded in Earth's fossils, this one at the end of the Permian period and the start of the Triassic was the most catastrophic. More than half of the families of living things died out, and as many as 90 to 96 percent of the planet's marine species were lost. At the same time, perhaps 70 percent of the land's reptile, amphibian, insect, and plants species went extinct.
