euronews the network - Common culture and European cinema
www.euronews.com A quote, commonly ascribed to one of the fathers of the European Union, Jean Monnet said: "If I had to do it again, I would start with culture". As Europeans struggle among themselves over a financial crisis and as the world's movie industry attend the Cannes Film Festival; how much could the lack of EU solidarity be due to the lack of a common culture? If Europeans could laugh sing and cry together to the same home grown films and music, would that help create a common European identity? Should the EU and member states intervene, or should they stay out of contemporary culture and leave it to the free-market and the consumers? Wired into this edition of The Network is Edouard Waintrop, Head of the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival; Juliette Duret, Coordinator and Film Curator at the Bozar Cinema in Brussels and Michael Bartholomew, former European Head of the Motion Picture Association of America or MPAA. euronews cinema - European cinema in rude health
www.euronews.com The Maltese capital Valletta welcomed the great and the good from the European film industry for the 25th jubilee edition of the European Film Awards. Organisers believe the festival is the perfect platform to showcase the strength and variety of European filmmaking. Famed German director Wim Wenders is one of the event's founders. "I have been with the EFA from the start, and sometimes I'm like: hang on a minute, it's almost unbelievable that it still exists. When we started we were naive and the event was rather small but now it has become a pretty big thing." Mads Mikkelsen is a Danish actor: "It is celebrating films made in Europe. We should do that twice a year. There is such a diversity, we should stay that way." The night's big winnner is Austrian director Michael Haneke and his film "Amour." The film picked up a cabinet filling Best Director, Best European Film, Best Actor, and Best Actress awards. The movie explores the relationship between an elderley couple after the woman suffers a stroke: "I believe in every film you find autobiographical moments. It's legitimate. One has to find inspiration from somewhere. But I personally hate autobiographical films, which people do because they want to turn their own suffering souls inside out. In this film there are some details from my personal experience, but I would not call the film autobiographical," European cinema is on a roll with all six nominated films achieving euro-wide distribution. The ...

euronews cinema - Cartoon Movie shows depth of European talent
www.euronews.com Which European animation movie will get into cinemas tomorrow? 2012's Cartoon Movie, gathering over 700 participants from 35 countries in the French city of Lyon, presented 55 European animation film projects in a bid to raise finance for films either in concept, development, production or already completed. How does Cartoon Movie work? In the morning participants get to see trailers of the movie projects presented here. Film producers, buyers, distributors and sales agents then go to one of the presentation studios for more information about the project that interests them. The key questions are: What's the story? How much money do you need? Is it a family movie or for teenagers? Are the DVD rights for sale? After the business cards are exchanged everyone hopes for the beginning of a fruitful co-production. One of the projects, "The Boy with the Clock" is the story of Little Jack who was born on the coldest day on earth with a frozen heart. A doctor performs a Cuckoo Clock transplant to save his life The film project in production is based on a book by French musician and writer Mathieu Malzieu. "I wrote the music as if the book needed a film soundtrack. I was already dreaming about it being made into a movie, even thought I was far from sure one would ever be made. But luckily I bumped into Luc besson and his wife Virginie who wanted to produce it," he says. What has the audience feedback been like for the movie presentation? "We've had a lot of very ...

euronews cinema - "Ted" the naughty teddy bear opens in Europe
www.euronews.com Teddy bears are pretty popular film characters. But don't be misled, because this particular "Ted" isn't your average cuddly toy. The stuffed bear hangs out with prostitutes, takes hits from a bong and humps a cash register - all activities that would be pretty foreign to tamer, more wholesome characters like Winnie the Pooh. Ted is also John Bennett's best friend, who is played by Mark Wahlberg. He spoke about the character of Ted at the premiere: "Despite the fact that he's got the most foul mouth you've ever seen and he's a bad influence, he's also got a heart that's very sweet and very kind and also very funny." As the result of a childhood wish, John Bennett's teddy bear, Ted, came to life and has been by John's side ever since - a friendship that is tested when Lori, John's girlfriend of four years, wants more from their relationship. Lori is played by Mila Kunis. Mark Wahlberg also spoke about working on the film with Kunis: "She's just great. We were in it together. We knew we were taking a risk, but we were all in it together. She's worked with Seth (McFarlane, 'Family Guy' and 'Ted' creator) she has a lot of confidence in him. We worked together before and she's just very easy to get along with. She's smart, witty, very quick, but also easy going, which is a rare combination." "Ted" has been a box office success since the film was released earlier this summer. It's opening all across Europe now. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook ...

Monkey Dust: Pretentious French Cinema
Monkey Dust is a dark and satirical animated British TV program that ran on the BBC for 3 seasons. It is an acquired taste, but as far as I'm concerned it is the best TV ever made. This clip shows the filming of a French movie and takes a swipe at the pretentious nature of "arty" movies.

DEFENSE DE SAVOIR BRUNO NICOLAI
Super dramatic tune full of fuzz guitars, speedy jazz drums and powerful string orchestra from the Nadine Trintignant film DEFENSE DE SAVOIR. Certainly one of the super tracks of the career of Bruno Nicolai and of the European cinema of the 70s.

euronews reporter - Europe's big screen battle
Michele Berrebi owns a small cinema in the south of France in Provence. The cinema was set to close when she bought it four years ago. Michèle admits her survival depends on showing blockbuster films which, in turn, allow her to programme smaller, independent ones, offering her clients the diversity of European cinema. But it is not easy. ... www.euronews.net

euronews cinema - Mostra Di Venezia
www.euronews.com The Venice International Film Festival, or Mostra Di Venezia, celebrated its 80th anniversary this year. Holding its own throughout the years the festival remains one of the most highly regarded in the world, but with notable absences from Venice regular George Clooney and Hollywood heavyweights like Madonna and Angelina Jolie, it was up to the stars of European cinema to light up the red carpet.
