Ever since he arrived to the Heavy Music scene in 1984, Max Cavalera has been constantly reinventing mis musical craft. While it was his work with the mighty SEPULTURA that helped him become an International Metal Superstar, Max has proven through his additional work with SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY that his musical abilities are extremely multidimensional.
Max left SEPULTURA in 1996, following the murder of Dana Wells (Max's stepson) and the firing of Gloria Cavalera Bujnowski (Max's wife & Dana's mother) as SEPULTURA's manager. While many artists would have had a hard time starting a NEW band and making it successful, Max has proven with SOULFLY that his musical vision is what sets him apart from other artists. Get this, SOULFLY turns 15 years old this year and have eight studio albums under their musical belt!
With the release of SOULFLY's eighth studio album 'Enslaved', Max has created one of the heaviest records of his career. Thanks to his decision to add NEW members Tony Campos (ex-Static X, Prong Ministry, Posessed, Asesino) and David Kinkade (Borknagar, Arsis), SOULFLY has created a contender for album of the year! If you haven't seen the current incarnation of SOULFLY live, you must!
Recently, we met up with Max at his hotel room in New York City before the "MAXIMUM CAVALERA Tour" show at The Gramercy Theatre. Once the camera was rolling, we chatted with him about growing up in Brazil and how this influenced his musical career. We also discussed the response of the public thus far to the current killer lineup and SOULFLY's NEW album 'Enslaved'. Additionally, we discussed what it means to Max having his kids bands INCITE and LODY KONG open up the show for him and how it feels to have his brother Iggor back in his life. And of course we asked him about a potential SEPULTURA reunion and about the change in guard at his long time record label: ROADRUNNER RECORDS! Check out what Max had to say about all of this!

Max Cavalera of Soulfly, Nailbomb and legendary Sepultura speaks about composing, playing heavy riffs and staying simple, with your influences intact but not dominant. He also explains the incident from the old Sepultura days that made him get rid of the two high strings ever since.
1st part of a two part interview.
Not really a technique to die for but more of a lesson in simplicity in music ideas (meaning being heavy and addictive without sounding like Dream Theater).

Cavalera Conspiracy is a heavy metal group formed by Brazilian brothers Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar) and Igor Cavalera (drums), along with American guitarist Marc Rizzo and the bassist Johny Chow, also from USA. The band originally formed in 2007 as Inflikted but changed its name for legal reasons. The group's creation marked the end of a 10-year feud between the Cavalera brothers, who founded Sepultura in the early 1980s. They remained together in that band until December 1996, when Igor, guitarist Andreas Kisser, and bassist Paulo Jr. suggested to Max that the band cancel its contract with his wife and manager Gloria, saying she paid more attention to him than the band. Disagreeing, Max decided to leave Sepultura.

DAVE GROHL of the FOO FIGHTERS and NIRVANA released a CD called PROBOT in 2003 which was his Heavy Metal side project. I created a music video for the song RED WAR which features vocals by MAX CAVALERA of Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, Nailbomb and Sepultura. Max wrote the lyrics after watching the film The Man Who Would Be King.
For this music video, I chose clips of Dave Grohl back in his NIRVANA days as well as the infamous Foo Fighters show in Wembley Stadium. I chose clips of Max Cavalera from various SEPULTURA and SOULFLY shows as well as a somewhat rare show of NAILBOMB performing in Holland.
Interspliced between this footage are clips from the movie KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and documentary films about Babylon and The Kyber Pass.
Hope you enjoy this music video as much as I had fun creating it.

While it was his work with the mighty SEPULTURA that helped him become an International Metal Superstar, Max has proven through his additional work with SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY that his musical abilities are extremely multidimensional.
Max left SEPULTURA in 1996, following the murder of Dana Wells (Max's stepson) and the firing of Gloria Cavalera Bujnowski (Max's wife & Dana's mother) as SEPULTURA's manager. While many artists would have had a hard time starting a NEW band and making it successful, Max has proven with SOULFLY that his musical vision is what sets him apart from other artists. Cavalera Conspiracy Performing Inner Self Live In France 2008
Cavalera Conspiracy is a heavy metal group formed by Brazilian brothers Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar) and Igor Cavalera (drums), along with American guitarist Marc Rizzo and the bassist Johny Chow, also from USA. The band originally formed in 2007 as Inflikted but changed its name for legal reasons. The group's creation marked the end of a 10-year feud between the Cavalera brothers, who founded Sepultura in the early 1980s. They remained together in that band until December 1996, when Igor, guitarist Andreas Kisser, and bassist Paulo Jr. suggested to Max that the band cancel its contract with his wife and manager Gloria, saying she paid more attention to him than the band. Disagreeing, Max decided to leave Sepultura.

Max Cavalera (Soulfly) interview about his guitar style (pt.1 of 2)
Max Cavalera of Soulfly, Nailbomb and legendary Sepultura speaks about composing, playing heavy riffs and staying simple, with your influences intact but not dominant. He also explains the incident from the old Sepultura days that made him get rid of the two high strings ever since.
1st part of a two part interview.
Not really a technique to die for but more of a lesson in simplicity in music ideas (meaning being heavy and addictive without sounding like Dream Theater).

He is a brilliant rhythm guitarist, it's just that by his own choice he now plays the absolute basics (which, of course, provokes all the relevant comments).

MAX CAVALERA Discusses Musical Roots, MAXIMUM CAVALERA Tour, SEPULTURA Reunion & More!
Ever since he arrived to the Heavy Music scene in 1984, Max Cavalera has been constantly reinventing mis musical craft. While it was his work with the mighty SEPULTURA that helped him become an International Metal Superstar, Max has proven through his additional work with SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY that his musical abilities are extremely multidimensional.
Max left SEPULTURA in 1996, following the murder of Dana Wells (Max's stepson) and the firing of Gloria Cavalera Bujnowski (Max's wife & Dana's mother) as SEPULTURA's manager. While many artists would have had a hard time starting a NEW band and making it successful, Max has proven with SOULFLY that his musical vision is what sets him apart from other artists. Get this, SOULFLY turns 15 years old this year and have eight studio albums under their musical belt!
With the release of SOULFLY's eighth studio album 'Enslaved', Max has created one of the heaviest records of his career. Thanks to his decision to add NEW members Tony Campos (ex-Static X, Prong Ministry, Posessed, Asesino) and David Kinkade (Borknagar, Arsis), SOULFLY has created a contender for album of the year! If you haven't seen the current incarnation of SOULFLY live, you must!
Recently, we met up with Max at his hotel room in New York City before the "MAXIMUM CAVALERA Tour" show at The Gramercy Theatre. Once the camera was rolling, we chatted with him about growing up in Brazil and how this influenced his musical career. We also discussed the response of the public thus far to the current killer lineup and SOULFLY's NEW album 'Enslaved'. Additionally, we discussed what it means to Max having his kids bands INCITE and LODY KONG open up the show for him and how it feels to have his brother Iggor back in his life. And of course we asked him about a potential SEPULTURA reunion and about the change in guard at his long time record label: ROADRUNNER RECORDS! Check out what Max had to say about all of this!
And hey, there is no question that Max has plenty of musical fire left to burn for years to come and that the Cavalera's reign in Heavy Music will carry on for years to come.

Massimiliano Antonio "Max" Cavalera (born August 4, 1969) is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the heavy metal band Sepultura, before forming Soulfly in the late 1990s. Cavalera was also involved in a short-lived side project, Nailbomb, and is currently performing with Soulfly and another project, Cavalera Conspiracy.

His father, Graziano Cavalera, was an employee of the Italian Consulate in São Paulo and died at 40 years of age and is buried in Belo Horizonte; Max was only 9 when his father died.
Max's family was in a state of financial crisis and family turbulence when he formed Sepultura with his younger brother Igor and Wagner Lamounier, later adding Paulo Jr. and Jairo Guedes after Lamounier left the band. Andreas Kisser later replaced Guedes after the latter left Sepultura.
In the early 1990s he relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. He did not begin to make "spiritual" music until after he quit Sepultura. His earlier lyrics for Soulfly were influenced by religion and spirituality, though he is very critical of religion. His later albums, starting with Dark Ages, began to incoporate lyrical themes of violence, warfare, anger, and hatred. His albums have all been dedicated to God, and he has often been depicted by the press as a man of religion, especially in America, something that Cavalera himself says he does not understand. As he himself put it:
| “ | I do hate a lot of 'religion' but people like Christ - yeah they inspire me. I mean if you look at Christ, He was hanging around with the lowlifes, prostitutes and the losers you know, not going around with those high society motherfuckers you see trying to sell Jesus today![1] | ” |
When asked in an interview whether he was a Christian and whether Soulfly was a Christian band, he said:
| “ | No. I mean, if I was a Christian I would wear all these different kinds of omens. Because Christian people are so close-minded. A priest would not accept that. So I don't like the concept of Christianity in terms of being so close-minded. It is the same with music. Sometimes I compare preachers to close-minded musicians or close-minded listeners, who only like one kind of music. Some preachers are the same. And they don't tolerate Hindus, Buddhists or whatever. Only them. It's bullshit. So Soulfly is not a Christian band at all. Very much opposite. But we are very spiritual. Spiritual has nothing to do with Christianity anyway. It has been here since the beginning of time.[2] | ” |
In another interview regarding religion he was asked about the Varg Vikernes church burnings. He quoted, 'I support church burnings 100 percent, but why don't we just burn everything. Mosques, temples, all religious buildings.' However he later claimed his views changed about the church burnings and called them "too violent."
He also stated that he does believe in God, "But it might be different than the God the preacher preaches about."
Of enduring influence to his music is the untimely death of Dana Wells, his stepson, who was killed after the release of Roots in 1996. The songs "Bleed", "First Commandment", "Pain", "Tree of Pain" and "Revengeance" are tributes to Wells, as well as Deftones' song "Headup", in which Cavalera co-wrote and was featured.
He has reunited with his brother Igor, in their band Cavalera Conspiracy, and wrote and performed on Soulfly's Conquer, which was released in 2008.[3] [4]
In November 2011 Cavalera announced that he was working on an autobiography, for publication in 2012: his co-writer is the British author Joel McIver and the book's foreword will be written by Dave Grohl.[5]

With Sepultura, Cavalera played a B.C. Rich Warlock, and now plays a custom ESP 6 String signature guitar. Designed to his specifications and based on the Viper design, the guitar features a Seymour Duncan SH6 Distortion pickup. A budget version (with a stock pickup) is sold under the LTD moniker. Another signature guitar produced by ESP, based on the AX model, is white with a Soulfly logo inlays. He also used a series of Gibson SG guitars during his later years in Sepultura and on the first two Soulfly albums and the tours that supported them. For 2011, ESP did a new signature model for Max, called the Max Cavalera EX, which consists in a single Seymour Duncan distortion and Soulfly logo inlays. He plays through a Peavey 3120, and also used Peavey 6505.
Cavalera's own guitar is only strung with four strings, as he has claimed that he never used the highest two strings. Besides the guitar, he also plays a berimbau, a Brazilian one-string instrument (cordophone family), a sitar and sometimes percussion on stage and studio recordings.

Cavalera has collaborated with many different artists while in Sepultura and Soulfly. In 2003 he joined forces with former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl to produce "Red War" for the self-titled release of Dave Grohl's metal project, Probot.

Cavalera appeared in The Scorpion King in an off-camera role, providing the guttural screams for Dwayne Johnson.[6] He also appears in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned as a DJ for the radio channel LCHC.
