GE Aviation engine bid lowest for India's jet fighter HAL LCA Tejas Bangalore, Sep 30 (IANS) General Electric's subsidiary GE Aviation was declared the lowest bidder for supplying engines to power India's second generation Hal lca Tejas fighters, the Light Combat Aircraft HAL LCA Mark-2, a senior official said Thursday. GE Aviation emerged as the lowest bidder for supplying about 100 engines GE-F414 to fit into the LCA TEJAS Mk-2,' Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Chief Controller (R&D) Prahlada told IANS here. Europe's Eurojet, a sister concern of Eurofighter that manufactures jet engines for its Typhoon fighter, was the other bidder short-listed for the multi-billion rupee tender after the global tender that was was floated in 2009 by the Indian defence ministry. Price negotiations and contract finalisation will be worked in the next two months,' Prahlada said. 'GE Aviation will deliver 20 GE-F414 engines from 2014 and the rest will be manufactured in India under transfer of technology to our defence establishments.' According to a statement by the state-run DRDO, the price negotiating committee for the alternate engine declared GE Aviation the lowest bidder after commercial quotes of both the bidders were compared following evaluation and acceptance of their technical offer. We have decided to go for a new engine for the HAL LCA Tejas Mark Mk-2 after the Indian Air Force IAF sought a better engine with higher rate of performance in terms of speed ...

The HAL Tejas is a lightweight multirole fighter developed by India. It is a tailless, compound delta-wing design powered by a single engine. It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, which began in the 1980s to replace India's ageing MiG-21 fighters. Later the LCA was officially named "Tejas", meaning "Radiance" by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Tejas has the delta wing configuration, with no tailplanes or foreplanes, and features a single vertical fin. It integrates technologies such as relaxed static stability, fly-by-wire flight control system, advanced digital cockpit, multi-mode radar, integrated digital avionics system, advanced composite material structures and a flat rated engine. The IAF is reported to have a requirement for 200 single-seat and 20 two-seat conversion trainers, while the Indian Navy may order up to 40 single-seaters to replace its Sea Harrier FRS.51 and Harrier T.60. The Tejas achieved a speed of over 1350 kilometres per hour (840 mph) during its sea level flight trials, thus becoming the second supersonic fighter developed indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited after the HAL Marut.[8] The Tejas was cleared in January 2011 for use by Indian Air Force pilots. It will not reach final operational clearance until 2014 General characteristics Crew: 1 Length: 13.20 m (43 ft 4 in) Wingspan: 8.20 m (26 ft 11 in) Height: 4.40 m (14 ft 9 in) Wing area: 38.4 m² (413 ft²) Empty weight: 6560 kg (14460 lb) Loaded weight ...

Trivia : The tail number of TD1 ie KH2001 has the initials of LCA Program Director 'Kota Harinarayana' and 2001 represents the year of first flight. He can be seen hugging the test pilot 'Rajiv Kothiyal' @ 07:00. Kota Harinarayana is a lively person and can often be seen joking and laughing intermittently :) Video taken from www.tejas.gov.in

The HAL Tejas is a lightweight multirole jet fighter being developed by India. It is a tailless, compound delta wing design powered by a single engine. Originally known as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)—a designation which continues in popular usage—the aircraft was officially named "Tejas The Tejas is presently undergoing flight testing. It will be inducted into the IAF in limited numbers once Initial Operating Clearance (IOC) is achieved. Independent analysts and officials in the IAF expect that deliveries of operational Tejas fighters are likely to begin in 2011, with combat service entry around 2013. The IAF has created a 14 member "LCA Induction Team", composed of IAF pilots and officers and headed by Air Vice Marshal BC Nanjappa. This team's objectives are to oversee the induction of the LCA, help to solve any challenges that may arise, help the developers customize the Tejas for operational use, as well as help create doctrine, training programs, maintenance programs and help prepare the IAF to speedily ready the Tejas for operational service. This reveals the IAF's desire to be more involved in the LCA light combat aircraft development as well as its urgency to induct new aircraft. The team is stationed in Bangalore. Senior HAL officials had said in March 2005 that the IAF would place a Rs. 2000 crore (over US$450 million) order for 20 Tejas aircraft, with a similar purchase of another 20 aircraft to follow. All 40 will be equipped with the F404-GE-IN20 engine ...
