Olympic National Park Washington Beach Hike Day Four
Olympic National Park Washington Coastal strip No fewer than 150 ships have met an untimely fate along the Washington coast, a big chunk of which is taken up by Olympic National Park. The 62-mile shoreline is renowned for its storm-tossed ocean, and to walk it is to feel the sobering power of surf, fog, and waves. Your daily companions might be gray whales, bald eagles, sea otters, and sea lions, but at night, huddled around a driftwood campfire, you'll likely feel the presence of something else: ghosts. GAME PLAN: Among the beach-hiking cognoscenti, the 23 wild miles between Cape Alava and Rialto Beach hold a certain attraction: sea stacks, tide pools, lazing seals, and none of the elevation change you'll find up in the mountains. But that hardly means the trek is, ahem, a walk in the park. Scrambling over headlands is hard, slippery work, while walking around them might mean waiting on a tide change. You'll need three full days at least. From the Ozette Ranger Station, start for the coast on a three-mile boardwalk that cuts through a boggy forest of western hemlock and western red cedars. At Cape Alava, scope for migrating gray whales (in the spring and fall), then turn south. The going is easy at first—about a mile in, keep an eye out for Wedding Rocks, which are covered in petroglyphs—but gets trickier after Yellow Banks, with a four-mile run of slick boulders and ankle-deep gravel. Hiking poles are a big help here. The route is dotted with eight designated camping ...

Washington 2012
Turn the volume way up for music. Almost everything shot in 1080: watch this in HD. My brother, a couple friends, and I went to Washington State in July to do our annual backpacking trip this year. We flew into Seattle and rented a car and spent nine days driving to different places and finding places to sleep. We backpacked to Spider Gap in the Okanogan - Wenatchee National Forest, Shi Shi Beach in Olympic National Park, and did the Mother Mountain Loop in Mt. Rainier National Park. We did a whole lot of driving and did spend one night in a hotel (for full disclosure). Here's a little video of the trip. Also, as a side note, all the packs and tarps that are in the video were made by my brother (Michael). Enjoy the slow motion seagull. Washington 2012 locations: Spider Gap (Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest), Shi Shi Beach (Olympic National Park), Mother Mountain Loop (Mt. Rainier National Park), and the Seattle area. All footage was shot on a GoPro hero 2

Hoh Rain Forest - Roosevelt Elk Herd - Olympic National Park - WA, USA
After checking out the two waterfalls about 3 miles down the Hoh River Trail, in the Hoh Rain Forest, Olympic National Park, I was in a hurry to get back before dusk. As I was speeding along, this Roosevelt Elk Herd blocked the trail for a few seconds before I could pass! This will be burned in my memory for a long time! If you're in this part of the country, you owe it to yourself to make it up to the Hoh Rain Forest...It's magical!

Snowshoeing at Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, January 2012
Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, in Washington state, is open year-round, although the road does close nightly during the winter, and sometime when the weather gets really bad. Chains are definitely required on all vehicles depending on the weather, as you can see from the driving portions of the video. While at the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center, we signed up for their snowshoeing excursion, which lasted about an hour and a half with frequent stops along the way for informative sessions with our National Park Service guide, Lily. She was great, and the walk was pretty easy, no rough terrain, although there was a foot of powder everywhere. The weather is pretty iffy. It's called Hurricane Ridge for a reason, winds often top out at well over hurricane force. You rise to an altitude of 5242' above sea level (from sea level) in 17 miles of road. It is definitely winter at the top of the ridge during the winter. In Port Angeles, at the bottom of the hill, the weather is often much milder; a more typical northwest scene of rain.
