Computer Pioneer Robert Kahn with Ed Feigenbaum
[Recorded Jan 9, 2007] Robert Kahn is Chairman, CEO and President of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI), which provides funding for research and development of the US National Information Infrastructure. Shortly after graduating from university, Kahn took a leave of absence from MIT where he was an Assistant Professor to join the research firm Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN). While there, he was responsible for the system design of the Arpanet, the first wide area packet-switched network. He was also a part of the BBN team developing the Interface Message Processor (IMP), a small computer that served as the Arpanet packet switch and standardized the network interface to all attached host computers. In October 1972, he organized a demonstration of the Arpanet at the International Computer Communication Conference in Washington, DC He then moved to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and subsequently became Director of its Information Processing Techniques Office. Soon after arrival, he initiated the Internetting project to develop an open architecture for networking, ensuring that communications could occur in a network-independent manner. While devising methods of ensuring reliable communications between such networks, he and Vint Cerf (CHM Fellow, 2000), developed the Internet architecture and basis for the TCP/IP protocol suite, first described publicly in May, 1974. Kahn later initiated the Strategic Computing Program, an effort to ...

Robert Kahn - INTERNET HALL of FAME PIONEER
Robert Kahn is the co-inventor of the TCP/IP protocols and was responsible for originating DARPA's Internet program. Known as one of the "Fathers of the Internet," Kahn demonstrated the ARPNET by connecting 20 different computers at the International Computer Communication Conference. It was then that people realized the importance of packet switching technology. While Director of Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO) at DARPA, he initiated the United States government's billion dollar Strategic Computing Program, the largest computer research and development program ever undertaken by the federal government. Dr. Kahn conceived the idea of open-architecture networking and coined the term National Information Infrastructure (NII) in the mid 1980s, which later became more widely known as the Information Super Highway. In December 1997, President Bill Clinton presented the US National Medal of Technology to Kahn and his colleague, Vinton Cerf, for founding and developing the Internet. In 2004, Kahn was the recipient of the ACM Alan M. Turing award (sometimes called the "Nobel Prize of Computer Science") and in 2005 he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George Bush. Robert Kahn was inducted to the Internet Hall of Fame on April 23, 2012 at a ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland. For more information on the Internet Hall of Fame please visit www.internethalloffame.org

Internet History part 2: Vint Cerf & Bob Kahn Invent Code of Internet (TCP explained)
Life Online at the National Media Museum We have opened the world's first gallery dedicated to exploring the social, technological and cultural impact of the internet. This permanent gallery will trace the history of the internet, uncover how it has changed people's lives and track the latest trends. The gallery will bring together historically significant content, multimedia displays, and a programme of special exhibitions exploring contemporary trends and issues related to how the internet and the web are changing society. Life Online will be powered by the ideas, thoughts and opinions of our physical and virtual visitors, ultimately creating an invaluable public archive of society's relationship with the internet and the web in the 21st century. The gallery will cover two spaces within the Museum; a permanent exhibition in the foyer and a changing temporary exhibition on Level 7. Foyer Gallery The Museum foyer area will contain a permanent exhibition that will track the history of the internet, from the first experimental messages to the rise of modern social networking. A range of inspiring interactives and fun games will explore the story of the internet, whilst a timeline of objects will showcase the evolution of internet and computing technology. Large-scale overhead projection units will allow the visitor to immerse themselves in a rich multimedia content archive and browse the web as they've never seen it before. The foyer narrative will be divided into four ...
