UNICEF: Exec. Director Ann M. Veneman in Philippines
MANILA, Philippines, 8 October 2009 UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman visited the Philippines yesterday to see the damage done by Tropical Storm Ondoy and subsequent massive flooding. Residents of Santa Cruz village in low-lying Pasig City, metro Manila, experienced floodwaters three and a half feet deep. UNICEF has provided the Pasig City authorities with family kits containing necessities such as water cans, blankets, mosquito nets and sleeping mats for the evacuees. In addition, it has distributed kits with essential medicines for use by health workers in the affected communities, as well as water and hygiene kits to ensure that families have safe water for drinking and cooking. Educational materials including a 100-book library to replace the materials that were lost in the flood will also help to provide a sense of normalcy for children. UNICEF: Ann M. Veneman's closing remarks for Executive Board
NEW YORK, USA On 16 September, the final day of its second regular session of 2009, the UNICEF Executive Board adopted nine decisions related to UNICEF programme cooperation, evaluation, oversight and budget. Later in the sessions final day, UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman updated the Executive Board on global preparations to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on 20 November 2009. Veneman noted that the history of the CRC is one of commitment and collaboration. As such, she remarked, it was fitting to see plans for the wide range of substantive events being staged around the world, with and by Member States, to underline the global impact of the CRC and the challenges that remain. At the close of the session, the Executive Director thanked the delegates, noting the importance of UNICEF maintaining a steady and responsible course during the present global economic downturn. She said the organization would aim to stay that course through efficiency gains realized from improved business practices and through the work of its National Committees, which have redoubled their efforts to mobilize resources for children. UNICEF: Ann M. Veneman in Mali
www.unicef.org BAMAKO, Mali, 11 November 2009 Bisected by the vast and growing Sahara Desert, Mali is a country where food and nutrition security are precarious even in the best of times. But with soaring food prices, a by-product of the global economic crisis, more and more people here are struggling to obtain adequate nutrition. Undernutrition has reached World Health Organization emergency levels, and hospital wards are full. Last week, UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman visited Mali, one of the poorest countries in the world, to draw attention to the issue. One in five children in Mali do not survive to see their fifth birthday, said Veneman. Most of these children are dying from preventable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria, often exacerbated by undernutrition. In Mali, 32 per cent of children under five are underweight.

UNICEF: Ann M. Veneman speaks on UN ECOSOC panel
NEW YORK, USA, 11 July 2008 -- The triple punch of rising food and energy prices, climate change and lagging investment in agriculture is posing fresh challenges for international development programmes and requires the United Nations to enhance cooperation worldwide, UN agency heads agreed at a panel in New York today. The panel opened the 2008 operational activities session of the UN Social and Economic Council, also known as ECOSOC. It featured the expertise of UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman, along with the heads of the World Food Programme, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Collaboration among UN agencies, local governments and the public and private sectors has helped bring mortality rates for children under five to record lows. It has also made inroads against polio, measles and malaria, Ms. Veneman noted in her opening remarks. But the current crisis in food stability means "we must approach our work with a collective sense of urgency," she added. To read the full story, visit: www.unicef.org

MaximsNewsNetwork: HAITI: UNICEF EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE: ANN M. VENEMAN (UNICEF)
MaximsNewsNetwork: 13 January 2010: UNICEF: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - UNICEF is gearing up to send supplies into Haiti. Ann M Veneman to address the UNICEF Executive Board meeting in New York about the disaster. Also, interview with Bernt Aasen, UNICEF Regional Director America and the Caribbean talking about the supplies that are on their way and how they'll be deployed. In response to the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti, UNICEF is sending humanitarian supplies to meet the urgent needs of children and families. At a UNICEF Executive Board meeting on disaster relief in Haiti earlier today, head of UNICEF, Anne Veneman, said that the special needs of children for food, shelter and protection must be factored in at the very onset of these relief efforts. UNICEF is deploying necessary supplies to Jacmel and Port-au-Prince to assist with the recovery efforts including clean water and sanitation, therapeutic foods, medical supplies and temporary shelter. In Haiti, schools have collapsed, homes destroyed, and hospitals are overwhelmed by the large numbers of injured coming in for medical assistance. Bernt Aasen, UNICEFs Regional Director for America and the Caribbean, said that the destruction in Port-au-Prince, just 17 kilometers from epicenter of the earthquake, is unbelievable. He added that currently there is no indication on the number of people who have been killed or injured but UNICEF fears that there might be thousands. UNICEF premises in Port-au-Prince ...
