Underdog syndicated edit
From a Chicago ME TV broadcast of The Underdog Show on Sunday, August 1, 2010: This is a part from the pre 1994 remaster syndie prints showing the edit of Underdog taking his SUPER ENERGY PILL. Taken from CHAPTER 3 of the Underdog "The Molemen" episode, the part where Sweet Polly puts the pill in Underdog's mouth (Seen complete in the complete The Molemen Chapter 3 episode elsewhere on YouTube) is cut out. What ME TV has for Underdog are probably the 1970's-1994 syndication prints. Underdog is owned by Classic Media.

Gil creator Norm Feuti explores fertile ground in new comic! (Interview)
Created and drawn by Norm Feuti, Gil is a comic strip centered around a chunky 8-year-old boy whose parents are divorced. It's a thoroughly modern take on family life that is drawn in classic comics style with a totally 2012 voice. Gil struggles with school and his appetite. His 1960s-style mom --complete with polka-dot kerchief always holding back her hair -- balances the demands of being a single parent with sustaining a career. Dumping Gil's slovenly dad -- who the boy only sees on alternate weekends -- was the smartest thing she ever did. Oh, and did I mention that Gil's best friend, Sandra, is also the product of a broken home? Maybe it doesn't sound like comedy gold the way I described it, but there is definitely a market for its style, tone and jokes. If Charles Schulz was starting out today, I suspect there would be threads of "Gil" in "Peanuts." One other interesting note about "Gil." The strip actually started in 2008 as a web-only comic. Feuti abandoned it after about a year and a half before taking a second, successful run at print syndication in 2011. What is Mr. Media® Interviews? In the previous scene, Widow Perkins had explained to Andy why she was not able to pay her taxes. But he was buried in it and she has been paying 50 cents a day rent for the last 2 years. In this scene Andy confronts the storekeeper who rented the suit.

In the summer of 2008 the iPhone App Store was new, and Uclick made the smart decision to own a leading position based on rights available to the company for comic content. This video showcases the first 100+ comic apps as well as the iPhone specific version of the company's GoComics.com website. Unfortunate the merger of Uclick into the traditional print syndication business of the parent company translated into a dead end to the smartphone strategy based on owned or managed content.

Grub Street/Paramount (1990)
The first variant of the Grub Street logo (static version), which is the production company of David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee, writers from "Cheers" who branched out and became the executive producers of "Wings" (1990-1997) and "Fraiser" (1993-2004). Grub Street is seen on all episodes of "Wings" and "Fraiser," which can both currently be seen in syndication on USA and Lifetime Television, respectively. The Paramount logo is the 1987-2001 CGI Mountain (1989-1995 variant) with the "Paramount Communications Company" byline, with a gold byline, which was only used in 1989. It was featured on the pilot episode of "Wings," which leads me to believe it was still being used in April 1990 (when the pilot episode aired), or that the episode was shot at some point in 1989 and the logos were put intact. In syndication, where I obtained this print from, the logo is nicely preserved. TV Land varied its use of the "Paramount Communications Company" byline logo with the Viacom byline logo, introduced in 1995. USA keeps the "Paramount Communications" byline well-preserved on all early eps from 1990-1994 (post-1994 eps vary in what is used - I believe I've seen both the Viacom and Paramount bylines used on post-1995 eps). "Wings: The Complete First and Second Seasons," as well as the Complete Third season on DVD preserve the "Paramount Communications byline," but the fourth and fifth seasons use the curent CBS-Paramount logo (though I found a fun mistake on either my 4th or 5th ...

53rd Journalism Awards Gala (part 1)
A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC
HM: Kitty Felde: KPCC
A5. ONLINE JOURNALIST
Daniel Heimpel, FosteringMediaConnections.org
2nd Place: Chris Hedges, Truthdig.com
HM: Robert Scheer, Truthdig.com
A6. SPORTS JOURNALIST
N/A
A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV
A8. PHOTO JOURNALIST
Rick Loomis, Los Angeles Times
A9. DESIGNER
N/A
B. DAILY/WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS
Over 50,000 circulations – including news bureaus and correspondents
B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to
Home‖
B3. PERSONALITY PROFILE

HM: Karen Robes Meeks, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Murchison: A
Portrait of a Long Beach Lobbyist‖
B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?
Figures say no"
Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.

Santa Cruz Syndicate - Val Di Sole, Italy Aug. 1, 2010
The UCI Downhill World Cup Series is becoming a nail biter as Santa Cruz Syndicate's Greg Minnaar (SRAM RockShox), takes 2nd place today in Val Di Sole, Italy in the fifth of the six race series. Gee Atherton takes the series lead with a 3rd place finish, just 7 points ahead of Greg with one race left. GT's Marc Beaumont took the win much to everyone's delight! Steve Peat narrowly misses the podium in 6th place, .05 behind Steve Smith. Josh Bryceland cracks his first top ten of the season in 9th, but was disappointed in his finish after having a 4th place qualifier.
Val Di Sole delivered a great race today and the name suited the weekend which was filled with warm sunshine here in the "Valley of the Sun". Track conditions changed all week as the first practice day it was raining. The track dried out and each day became rougher and more beat up, holes forming everywhere. The qualifier was held on Friday, with just the top 80 men and 20 women for Saturdays practice. The qualifier went amazing for Josh as he had his best result so far with a 4th, it seemed his bad luck streak was behind him. Greg was on a great run but pushed too hard in a corner into some soft dirt and lost his front end, and 10 seconds in the process as well as valuable qualifying points with a 15th place. Gee Atherton won the qualifier taking the max 50 points, thus putting Greg 27 points behind him going into the final. Steve picked up a few points for his 10th place run.
The race schedule this week had one extra day of practice so we had a relaxing Friday evening where we all enjoyed a barbeque potluck held at the GT pits. It really showed what wonderful camaraderie the riders and teams have with one another. SRAM/Rockshox crew brought the meat, Mr. Minn stoked the coals, and the big hit was the Grana Padana Parmesan cheese and Italian red wine, a meal in itself.
Saturday's short practice schedule allowed the afternoon off for the riders and Greg and Steve went to the Freecaster booth to commentate the Pro Men's cross country race. They were a bit nervous at first and ended up doing a great job. Right after that Steve had an interview with Italian Playboy where they will make a 5-minute video for the web and the interview will be in the print magazine. Needless to say the interviewer was beautiful, in fact the mechanics said they couldn't even work after she left the pits...
Race day was a complete reversal of start order from the other world cups as Josh was fastest qualifier of the boys and would be fourth to last man down the hill. Greg was expected to take the hotseat on his run, which he did with ease. Steve was .49 faster than Greg at the first split but after hitting a tree lower down the course he held it together to just miss the podium in the end, placing 6th.
Many mistakes were made by the top riders and Greg's steady conservative run was the right call as his time held until Marc Beaumont took to the course and brilliantly eclipsed Greg's time by 1.40 seconds. Our eyes were on the big screen as Josh started his run, but his first split showed he was down by over 5 seconds. He kept hammering down, but lost a bit more time in the second half and his run was good for 9th place, his first top ten this year in the world cup. Marc held the hotseat until the very end when Gee Atherton managed just a 3rd place. This gave Gee the leader's jersey, the first time Greg has been out of it all season.
Steve says, "This was an awesome track. It was very technical and you are hitting stuff so fast and it just got rougher and rougher. I felt good all weekend but I'm just pissed off that I didn't put a run together in final. I hit a tree in qualifier and also hit a tree in the race and I missed the podium by .05 just like in Leogang. This is damn annoying because I know I can make the podium and I just haven't put it together. Thanks to the Syndicate for putting everything in place for me to do well. My bike was working sweet all weekend."
Greg said this about his 2nd place finish, "I needed a result in the final after a terrible qualifying run, but at the same time I couldn't afford a mistake or lose points. My race run was pretty bland and solid and had very few mistakes and it paid off in the end."
The podium was quite a fun celebration as everyone in attendance was happy for Marc's second career world cup win. He guzzled his winning champagne with gusto. Then the Santa Cruz Syndicate was called up to the podium to take the honors for the top team of the day. Steve rode his bike onto the stage to the cheers from the crowd, while mechanics Ricky Bobby, "Hatrick", and Tango enjoyed the bubbly after the great team effort.
We are looking forward to coming back to Val Di Sole for the world cup next year, but up next is the finale of the series in Windham, New York at the end of the month where Greg and Gee will duke it out to the very end for the title!

# Abnormal: The Sinema of Nick Zedd (2002) [DVD, Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]
My money was well spent on this fascinating DVD which includes alot of entertainment.
I was particularly impressed by the diversity of the soundtrack music. The Swans are featured in two films, Go to Hell and Kiss Me Goodbye and the impact of this music is stirring.
The Dream Syndicate supply the music to a film Zedd collaborated on with R. Kern called Thrust In Me.
The excerpt from War Is Menstrual Envy likewise features outstanding music as does Tom Thumb, a recent digital movie by Zedd featuring the eerie and chilling sounds of Copenhagen's ANK as well as an appearance by Steen Jorgensen of Sort Sol.
Original music supplied by Lydia Lunch with the help of Thurston Moore, Jim Sclavenous and Pat Place featured in The Wild World of Lydia Lunch is much better than the repetetive sounds one hears in Kern's movies, though both are good. Comparing Zedd to Kern is like comparing apples to oranges.
Additionally, the rare interviews with Zedd, including a short doc on his noise unit Zyklon B are excellent.
The sounds produced by this short lived "digital hardcore" unit are way more exciting and innovative than stuff one usualy hears and the visuals are riveting. Nick Bohn was some kind of musical genius with the sequencer, producing amazing white noise harmonics with Zedd in Zyklon B.
The best stuff on the DVD are the colorful visuals and rare outtakes utilizing some of the most extraordinary underground personalities I've ever seen. --E. Ganji for amazon.com

R.I.P. Nick Bohn ~
April 22, 1973-June 20, 2003
Written by Mary Lenoir Bond
This article is a small dedication to the sad passing of a dear friend, who the world lost very suddenly on June 20th 2003. His name was Nick Bohn, a.k.a. Nickels, Smurfetta, Gladys, etc. My best friend and I use to call him "Moaner" as well, because when we first met him back in 1987, he fell asleep at a party or two (completely sober, I might add!) and made these cute little moaning sounds. Back then, when I first met him, I saw him as very shy and sweet and quiet. Though he later emerged into someone more outgoing and outspoken, he always remained the perfect picture of sweet. I know people tend to overemphasize the good in a person and magically forget all the bad things when they pass, but I truly think you'd be hard pressed to find ANYONE with a single bad word to say about Nick. There have been special memorials for him across the country these past few weeks (from LA to New York). He is forever well loved and respected.
As I said, I met him at one of many Goth/Punk/New Wave parties and clubs going on in Sacramento in the 80s (where his Mom, Evelyn and Stepdad, Dale, and Father, Jim "The Eagle" Bohn all still reside. His only sister, Debbie, lives in Santa Rosa). We had many mutual friends who all hung out at The Second Level, Danceteria, Clunie Hall, etc. It wasn't until the early to mid 1990s when life had pulled both of us individually to the enchanting city of San Francisco that we really bonded. I spent most of my time with him and his partner at the time, Enrique, doing photo shoots, going to drag clubs, watching movies, listening to music, going to parties, and working on different art projects. I am proud to say that I starred in two of Nick's films in 1993/1994, one was called "Bliss" and the other was the infamous "Little Red" (which also featured Jason Mecier of the SF band ENRIQUE and bean/noodle art fame, Brigit Brat of the band GOD'S GIRLFRIEND, Heidi Wesbrock (LA based actress/artist) and Enrique Vargas (SF based photographer/artist). Nick and Enrique also published/edited the San Francisco based ‘zines Dragzine and Dragstrip in the mid 1990s.
Besides photography and film-making, Nick also did many "scrapbook art" collections, performance art, and played bass for the band THE VOLUPTUOUS HORROR OF KAREN BLACK, and was a member of numerous other bands including VERBALALA and SPLIT ME WIDE OPEN (with Jon Vomit). Nick moved to New York around the time I moved to LA, which was sometime in the later 1990s. We stayed in touch via phone and e-mail and he even came out for a visit in the summer of 1999. He stayed with his

Video Syndication
eaglewebvideo.com video syndication Video Syndication -- Getting the Competitive Edge! Video syndication is a hot topic in the world of online media. While the general idea of video syndication is understood well enough -- it's a way for content owners to make more money in more places. But, there's still plenty of confusion about what video syndication actually is, how it works, and what publishers need to do to start the revenue flowing. Do you know what video syndication is? Let's first start with a definition of terms. Video syndication builds on a similar model, which was developed for television. TV video syndication is the practice of selling the right to present a TV show in a specific geography for a specific time period, especially to more than one customer, such as a TV station, a cable channel, or a programming service such as a national broadcasting system. Daytime talk and game shows, sitcom reruns, original TV movies and reality shows are all great examples of video syndication. It's big business -- supporting a $4.2 billion ad marketplace in 2010 alone. Technology changes with time and technological changes are coming at record levels. We are currently in an age when the television (as well as the Internet) is going through a state of metamorphosis.
