Foivos Delivorias - Medley of Greek television commercials
I love this guy, he is such a great entertainer, funny, versatile and a great ballad writer and singer (and though this clip is funnest for Greek speakers of a certain age, his ballards and music, his interaction with the audience, make him a fine choice even if you don't understand a word of what is being sung). The setting for this free live concert in Athens, part of the Athens Festival (or should that be Athenian Festival) at the Open Air Theater in Kolonos only added to this cultural treat. The Athens or Athenian Festival runs through September 2009. For more on music, concerts, free, nearly free and euro depleting visit true-athens.com.

Hadrian's Library, Greek agora & Odeon of Herodes Atticus (Αθήνα/Athens)
Hadrian's Library was built by Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 132 on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens. The building followed a typical Roman Forum architectural style, having only one entrance with a propylon of Corinthian order, a high surrounding wall with protruding niches (oikoi, exedrae) at its long sides, an inner courtyard surrounded by columns and a decorative oblong pool in the middle. The library was on the eastern side where rolls of papyrus "books" were kept. Adjoining halls were used as reading rooms, and the corners served as lecture halls. The library was seriously damaged by the Herulian invasion of 267 and repaired by the prefect Herculius in AD 407-412). During Byzantine times, three churches were built at the site, the remains of which are preserved: ▪a tetraconch (5th c. AD) ▪a three-aisled basilica (7th c. AD), and ▪a simple cathedral (12th c. AD), which was the first cathedral of the city, known as Megali Panagia. Around the same period as the cathedral another church, Agios Asomatos sta Skalia, was built against the north facade, which is not preserved. The agora in Athens had private housing, until it was reorganized by Peisistratus in the 6th century BC. Although he may have lived on the agora himself, he removed the other houses, closed wells, and made it the centre of Athenian government. He also built a drainage system, fountains and a temple to the Olympian gods. Cimon later improved the agora by constructing new buildings and ...

Civic Rites: Democracy And Religion In Ancient Athens - Nancy Evans
ll4.me Civic Rites: Democracy And Religion In Ancient Athens - Nancy Evans Civic Rites explores the religious origins of Western democracy by examining the government of fifth-century BCE Athens in the larger context of ancient Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. Deftly combining history, politics, and religion to weave together stories of democracy's first leaders and critics, Nancy Evans gives readers a contemporary's perspective on Athenian society. She vividly depicts the physical environment and the ancestral rituals that nourished the people of the earliest democratic state, demonstrating how religious concerns were embedded in Athenian governmental processes. The book's lucid portrayals of the best-known Athenian festivals-honoring Athena, Demeter, and Dionysus-offer a balanced view of Athenian ritual and illustrate the range of such customs in fifth-century Athens.Author: Evans, Nancy Publisher: University of California Press Illustration: N Language: ENG Title: Civic Rites: Democracy and Religion in Ancient Athens Pages: 00288 (Encrypted PDF) On Sale: 2010-04-14 SKU-13/ISBN: 9780520262027 Category: History : Ancient - General Civic Rites explores the religious origins of Western democracy by examining the government of fifth-century BCE Athens in the larger context of ancient Greece and the eastern Mediterranean.
