Transformation in Senegal - Columbia Presbyterian Church
This video captures the amazing transformation God has created among a group of villages in Senegal, West Africa. In 1998, Columbia Presbyterian Church began a partnership with World Vision (www.worldvision.org) and a group of villages among the Wolof people group. The mission was to minister to the Wolof by developing clean sources of water, primary healthcare, primary education, micro-enterprise, and food security. The leaders of the villages decided how and when the aid would be delivered, eg, which villages should have water first. By serving the Wolof, and engaging with them, our intent has been to create questions in their hearts for which the only answer is Christ. We are praying that the Wolof will come to recognize that God loves them and that they will accept Christ. We do not push the Gospel on them, but only answer their questions. The result? Village leaders have asked for bibles and are asking questions that show they are curious about Christ. Learn more about this mission by contacting Columbia Presbyterian Church (www.columbiapresbyterian.org)

Aria from Ernestine composed by Chevalier De Saint George
The Chevalier de Saint Georges, born in 1745, was a gifted Classical Composer of African descent. His mother Nanon was of the Wolof people of Africa. He was also a Master Violinist, champion Equestrian, world class Fencer, and an outstanding Orchestral Conductor. He tutored Queen Marie Antoinette in her musical studies and was also a trusted and brilliant Military Strategist in service to the French Army. This particular aria is taken from Ernestine, one of seven operas that was written by this amazing man who has been inappropriately neglected in History books. I hope that you will learn about Le Chevalier as I have as you will be all the more richer for it. To understand your History is to gain confidence in who you are. NB.The aria is quite long so I have only included an excerpt here.

Ballet Sangamar - Journey to Africa

Waalo Waalo, independent non-commercial documentary, 69'', Senegal 2009
Waalo Waalo Info
In the year of 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nation expressed its concern with the desertification of the planet we inhabit, and particularly with the impoverishment of Africa. Following this assembly, 2006 was to be the International year for Deserts and Desertification. The main goal of this initiative was to support a set of events focusing on awareness on the new challenges posed on countries, international institutions and individuals, and their coordination against the gradual and troublesome impoverishment of arid zones, more and more subjected to the consequences of larger periods of drought. Despite the initiative we are still waiting for an evaluation on the success of the investment made!
When we leave our climatized environment in Europe and slowly get to the Sahel, that strip of land under the Sahara desert, the good intentions of the international community are but an echo we repeatedly hear in our pseudo-planetary consciences. We question then what is it that we know about extreme conditions we so much hear about. We question too much on what's said and silenced everyday; about the state of this world and, above all else, the real intentions of people that talk about these issues.
As a timid reply to our anxities on less tangible issues we have decided that we would direct independently Waalo Waalo, rejecting any type of pre-fabricated discourse on the value of the situation we went to find in the northern region of Senegal. Any extrapolations, connections, or echo of overly engaged discourses is not of our responsibility.
Waalo Waalo is a film taking place in Keur Momar Sarr, in the region of Louga, in the Sahel of Senegal. In this film we follow daily activities around the village, focusing on access to water. In the houses of Keur Momar Sarr, in the neighboring village of Robo or in the farther Ndialbenabe Macka, potable water is a ever present concern and a heavy weight in people's actions.
The contradiction is there, the proximity of villages with and without water resources, exploited locally by a national private company. Politics can be felt in the air. But despite hardships people show their dignity rejecting being victims, associating themselves among them.
The name Waalo Waalo simbolizes the people that inhabit this area, which before colonial times was the kingdom of Waalo, a name that has endured despite the desintegration of the social structures. Waalo Waalo is not supposed to be a film about Africa or about Senegal. it is not supposed to be an african film, a particularistic or a general film. It is a result of the many people that have crossed its way in a contributing fashion.
